Fix that hollow sound from a synthetic stock
I have tried several methods to deal with this and I never liked the results... until NOW! I tried spray foam (great stuff)... dont waste your time or the "great stuff". I also tried foam rubber... no good. The latest effort was cheapier and easier (relatively). I stuffed my stock with plastic grocery bags!
First step is of course to remove the butt pad. Now take the grocery bag by the bottom and twist it into a "rope". Roll the "rope" into a ball and stuff it in the stock. After about ten bags I would pack it with a dowel. Keep packing until the stock is full and the bags are wanting to squeeze out just a little. Put the butt pad on and its done! Sounds like it is solid now! I did this on a Tapco saw stock as well but first I reinforced the stock with a 1-1/2 schedule 40 pipe cut to fit horizontally then epoxied in place. |

Paper or plastic? I'm kidding, saw the "plastic" in the first paragraph.
Out of curiosity, why did the foam not work and how the hell did you get it out afterwards? Cheers, MG-70

The foam did deaden the sound but did not remove it, I dug the foam out with the same dowel rod... WHAT A MESS! I dont think I ever got all of it out
I stuffed the stock with grocery bags in about 15 minutes and when you thump it with a finger its like thumping solid wood. The stock was a ramline syntech for a small ring mauser... very hollow and VERY loud |

I did the same thing to a .223 Saiga that I ended up trading for another AK-type rifle. Sombody's gonna go "huh" if they ever take off the pad and 3 dozen bags try to expand out.
![]() On one FAL Century stock I epoxied some large washers and heavy card stock to the inner sides. Still sounds hollow, but more solid. |

Do you pack it in, or just pour it full?

jus fill her up and make sure you have a good seal (butt plate) or youll get dusted slightly and if you are pissing off the lady already.... grab some hair spray spray down the vermiculite layed out on a table to keep the dust down inside the rifle ......get the biggest grained stuff you can find or sift thru a screen to get rid of the small particles

I would stay away from using vermiculite for any application where it is going to be beat into small pieces creating a dust.
Vermiculite is now listed as a carcinogenic material. Most shippers used to use vermiculite for packaging material to absorb spills, however after the classification as a carcinogenic just about everyone stopped. The material inside of an AR stock is syntactic foam filled with microballons. Two part polyurethane foam found in most boat repair stores also works quite well, just make sure to coat the recoil tube with either plastic wrap or PVA as a release agent.

Concrete should do the trick.
Or Lead Shot? Enough joking, Actually, I suppose you need a sound dampening material. A hard material like concrete would carry the sound thru. Seriously, I like the wood suggestion the best. But then again, I don't mind the sound. Guess I shot too many AR's. JW |
