Mauser bolt dissassembly

The bolt and receiver #s match but I want to check the headspace on my 1916 .308 Mauser so how does the bolt come apart and go back together?

Question

It's been a while but I think you cock the rifle...move the safety to the vertical position...remove the bolt... unscrew the rear portion of the bolt...do not change location of the safety until reassembled or it is hard to reassemble.

Just want to know what disassembling the bolt has to do with checking headspace? I just slide the base of the gauge under the claw extractor and slide it into the action.

I always dissassembled Garand and 14 bolts so I figured that was the way to go.

Your lock time might improve if you clean out the bolt cavity, firing pin & spring & shroud. If you have never done it, it is likely full of gunk and possibly cosmoline. Not hard to take apart & reassemble

IIRC, there is a plunger in the front part of the rear bolt component (the one that the safety is on). Basically, you press the plunger in after you have safed the rifle (as Dick S said), and the whole thing unscrews easily.

In order to get an accurate measurement, the extractor needs to be removed to check headspace.

I have been pulling Mauser bolts for 40 years, and this tutorial on Mauser bolt dissasembly just showed me how to get the extractor off easier!
