Thumbs up Sportsman's Guide

Called up the Sportsman's Guide on Wednesday (20 April) afternoon (MDT) to order a couple of cases of Wolf 5.45x39mm FMJ ammo. What with rejoining their "buyers" club (I let my previous membership lapse a couple of years ago) for $30, and getting an extra 5% off the member's price, and getting free shipping (for joining), the delivered cost to my door was slightly under $110/case. That's pretty damn good when you figure that the $30 SG membership is also counted in that cost.

It was delivered today, 26 April. New, fresh production, lot N048-05. Polymer coated and all.

Thanks, SG...

As posted by others in another thread, I also noticed for the first time that Colorado is on their list for not receiving knives... I have no idea where that came from, since, to the best of my knowledge, Colorado has no laws against buying/owning this kind of thing. My guess is that someone making up their catalog mistakenly changed a "CA" to "CO" for Code 13. Once the mistake was made, it looks like the Guide has no mechanism for correcting this kind of "error." Then again, I may be wrong about the initial error...

Regardless, since I wasn't trying to order a knife (and there are plenty of others out there who are happy to sell me knives, Guide people (in case you're listening)... For example, I often order from Smokey Mountain Knife Works and have ordered from Bud K (among others) in the relatively recent past, and they all seem to be quite happy to take my money), this policy didn't affect me for this order. So you SG people, you are just loosing money with this policy...

But then again, I didn't try to order any knife, and I'm happy with the outcome of my order...

They give you free shipping only when you first join the club...

However, their "normal" shipping of this case of ammo to my address (Colorado) would have been $14, with the member's cost of the ammo $99.97 (or whatever pennies)/case. That's still about as cheap as you can find it right now. A case of the Wolf 5.45x39mm doesn't require their heavy item surcharge (which ranges from $5 to $20, depending on how heavy the item really is). I didn't pay any surcharge on the two cases, which weighed 58 lbs shipped in one package.

Actually, just so I don't mislead you here, the $14 shipping charge would have been for one case of ammo. Two cases would have been more than that, but not quite twice as much (and no additional surcharge over that)...

Just so we're clear... That's still pretty good.

And those shipping charges would be the same whether you're a "member" or not... The membership simply lowers the cost of most of the items they sell by 10%, but only by 5% for ammo (which they're selling close to the margin, anyway).

They're (SG) one of the industry sponsers of falfiles, so you can check all the specifics out by simply waiting for their pop-up ad at the top of the forums page and clicking on it. In addition, they routinely have $10 and $20 coupons available, which are often listed on the files. For example, with my just delivered order came a catalog with a coupon code for $10 off on my next $100 order. I could see this being used on another case of ammo shortly .

I been buying from SG for at least 10 or more years and have always been satisfied with the price and service. The only time I ever had to send an item back the replacement was back to me in less that a week total shipping time.

By the way, SG is out of the Wolf 5.45x39mm FMJ ammo, but they're saying that they should be shipping from their next shipment by May 6. They're accepting backorders right now for their current (old) price of $104.99 (which is $99.72 for club members)/1000.

You can't beat that price. It will be going up in cost soon.... AIM, in their most recent flyer, claims that Russian 7.62x39mm ammo has increased in cost to them by about 20% over the past few months (all of which they aren't yet passing on to their customers). It's a function of increased charges by the Russian producers and increased shipment costs to distributors in the U.S. The price of other Russian ammo will be seeing price increases too.

The point is that stocking up right now on Wolf and other currently produced Russian ammo is a really good idea.

And, no, I don't get any commission from Wolf...
