Russian chest rigs/vest for FAL mags?
Saw some neat Russian load bearing gear here and wondered if it was any good and if the models that carry 2 AK mags per pouch would also carry 2 FAL mags per pouch(although with a filler below or a Magpul up top for removal assistance?)
Thanks, Jason

Since no one is replying. The answer is, most probably not. Though you may be ably to squeeze two FAL mags into a double AK mag pouch that would only be if the pouch was made too large. You would have to put a spacer of some kind at the bottom as well to get the mag up where you can get at it. I have had good luck with triple AR magazine pouches and my homebrewed magpulls holding two each 20 or 30 round FAL magazines. All the same those are pretty nice looking rigs for the price. I would have to get one if I had an AK.

The 'tarzan' vests are designed for NATO loads-that is, 5.56, AR type mags, 2 in each-I believe 20 round. If 2 FAL mags would fit in a regular AR pouch (I couldn't tell you as I no longer have 5.56 LBE) I don't see why those wouldn't work.

2 FAL mags will fit in a triple 30 round AR pouch not a double.

What is throwing me here is a pouch designed for 3 M16 type mags will hold 2 FAL's, but I have a vest that will take 3-5.56 mags per pouch or 2-7.62x51mm mags or 2- AK47 mags per pouch and out of all of them the 5.56 mags and the AK mags tied for best fit due to the FALs dropping in too low . I dug out an East German rain camo pouch and it holds 4 FAL mags as well as 4 Ak47/74 mags. On the face of it the FAL mags shouldn't fit due to the obvious size difference, but the curve of an AK47 mag is "probably" allowed for in pouch design which I think might make the AK mag pouch width roughly the same as an FAL? Anyone out there with a Chicom 3 pouch/6 mag chest rig want to try a fit test for me?

No direct experience with the Russian stuff, but I've got some Chicom type 63 chest harness(very similar in size to a 20 rd. AK mag) that will take FN mags no problem. I've also got an Iraqi 4 cell chest harness that will take FN mags, but as you noted will need spacers.
My suggestion would be to pick up a US made pals compatible rig of some sort. I've got an extra PPM Chest System Patroller that I'd sell for $47 shipped. http://store.patriotmaterials.com/pr...id=11&catid=55 |
