Zip ties for ALICE clips????
In response to a bunch of different ways to back up the ALICE clips I've never heard of this one so I tried it.
Use the right sized zip ties to secure pouches to the web belt. They go right thru the existing slots, & if you arrange them so that the locking tab is at the top of the belt with the protruding part facing away from the body they wont bind or pinch. Trim off the excess length with side or end cutters flush to the locking tab& carefully melt the sharp end with a lighter flame to deburr the cut end. If you position them so the locking tab is alligned with the top of the web belt they are really flush. New idea or just so bad everyone tried it & it didn't work?

While yer mebbe not the first to discover the myriad of uses for zip-ties, including locking down ALICE clips; I applaud yer in-depth. technique. I'da never thought of turning them thataways! Someone here posted a wel accepted series of pix of the same gig, using para cord. Pictorial instruction of the manner of looping/fastening may be better than written?? Seriously.... While most have heard of these "tricks", few have ever [had to do] done it. Saving someone else the aggravation of having to dope out the best method of doing something is a small blessing. Best, Paul

I use various types of Zip-Ties in my job everyday. One thing I have noticed is the quality varies widely. I have snapped cheap ones tightening them by hand and seen good ones (Kimball) rated at 55 lbs that would not snap under several hundred pounds weight. Might want to do some testing of the various brands available regarding break strength before you trust your gear to them. Armed with this knowledge you can also make decisions about using the lighter duty ones to make "breakaway" attachments.

We used 550 Para cord or zip ties to secure ammo pouches, etc. to web gear and lost a couple pounds of alice clips. The method Brownknees outlined is exactly the way i did it in the 70's when i could scrounge zip ties, we just did away with the metal clips. Now i don't leave home w/o zip ties

I like MALICE clips better. Zips ties can take on some strange shapes under stress, some that poke you. As always, YMMV.

At work, we've got zip ties that have a metal catch instead of a plastic catch. Haven't seen them in any stores. Will try to obtain source info.
Have used zip ties on GI LBE belt. Seemed to hold up well. Don't tighten them too much to where the belt starts curling. Got the MALICE clips to hold GI pouches onto a TT MAV. The heads/catches are down. Don't know if it matters. No signs of the plastic weakening.

We used zipties and have had no problems as long as they are the UV resistant black ties and meet milspec MIL-S-23190 (should say so on the case or bag that they come in). Use the ones that are rated for 50lb.s or more.

Ditto what Palo said-make sure they are the black, UV resistant ones. In a SHTF scenario, it would also be good to have a pack or two of heavier 11" ones - uses would include handcuffs and securing gear, or even field expedient repairs.

zip ties & ALICE clips
Thanks for the input, guys.
I'm looking into the metal tabbed ones from the catalogues at work also, I know I've seen them somewhere. I'll post a source if I find it. Also thanks for the crazy glue tip. I hadn't thought of the tightening problem. |

The ones we get from KIMBALL have the metal tabs. They are rated at like 55 lbs, but they hold much more. We had a 130lb guy try to break one by hanging on it. It stretched but never let go.
