SAR 48 full auto - are they good guns?
Greetings:
I have a chance to purchase a very good condition SAR 48 full auto rifle. I understand they are a Imbel gun made in Brazil and imported by Springfield Armory. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? - function ok? - good quality? - any comments good or bad? Thanks in advance for your help and Happy Holidays. Bill |

I have a select fire SAR-48 HB and am very pleased with it. They are a factory select fire and not a conversion.
Function has been perfect, quality about as good as it gets. I did not like the factory(grey) finish,so I sent it off to Derek at AZEX and had him refinish it in satin black with letters/numbers highlighted and had the wood refinished a bit darker, looks great. Which configuration are you looking at getting? Good Luck, Jimmy |

This one appears to be black synthetic stock and handguards. Has fold down bipod and is in very good condition. I thought imbels were good especially a full auto that was not a conversion.
Thanks for your help and Merry Christmas. Bill |

There were NO Imbel receivers in this country prior to 1968. Therefore ANY transferable FAL MG with an Imbel receiver IS a conversion. All of the SAR48 machineguns sold by Springfield Armory are conversions. None came from the factory as a machinegun. Springfield did a good job of it, though. But so did LaFrance, Billistics, Pearl, and several other guys. Anyway, enjoy your HB! 1gewehr

Good point. However I spoke with RSI about a select fire Springfield/Beretta BM-59 I had and was told that the Beretta & Imbel receivers were brought in prior to 86 as incomplete receivers and final machining(simple machine work not related to select fire function) was finished here. I really dont think that is considered a conversion. I purchased my SAR 48 from Ken Elmore who I have done a lot of business with and he gave similar info. I would really like to know what the real deal is also, what have you heard or read? Thanks, Jimmy |

It really doesn't matter who did the milling of the sear relief. It's minor work for anyone with a milling machine.
I had not heard anything about bringing in 'non-gun' receivers and doing the final machining in the US. I thought that I had read an article 'back when' that they were doing the conversions to semi recievers. As long as it looks god and works good, who cares?! Enjoy! 1gewehr
