Yeah, that's my own headline. What else can you say when dozens of teachers escape UNharmed, leaving 90+ school children to the worst fate imaginable--BURNING ALIVE? Is this REALLY who we want to be tied to at the hip?
India school inferno shows official COWARDICE As the number of children killed in the blaze rose to 90... government officials confirmed that all 20 of the school's adult staff members escaped the fire unharmed. Fire officials said teachers could have saved many of children who burned to death, all of whom were between the ages of 6 and 11. "We didn't see any teachers or any principal or school authority," said Kaleemutri Kumar, one of the first firefighters to arrive at the scene, the Lord Krishna School. "If the teachers were interested, they could definitely save at least 80 or 90 lives." All of those who died were in one classroom. What a fine heroic bunch. ![]() |

Gee NEM, they did manage to get several hundred children out. Or did you just gloss over that.
Histrinics, moral vagueness, your stock in trade. Are there culpable individuals? I'm sure we'll see, but once again a knee-jerk is de riguer for you.

While EM's overly active imagination does tie seemingly disparate connections one thing does stick out in the article, "Fire officials said teachers could have saved many of children who burned to death...."
I have a feeling that, for a few people working in that school, the shit is going to hit the fan. Working with a several Indys here at OU I learning more than this article presented. Apparently, school officials knew the school was on fire, but didn't immediately evacuate the THATCHED ROOF structure. Instead the children were kept in their rooms until smoke filled the rooms and burning materials collapsed around them. In addition, it appears most of them did not die directly from the fire, but from smoke inhalation and trampling. At least it wasn't as bad as the 400 that met a similar fate in '95. Many fires will line the Ganges and vultures will have their fill.

Fear and ignorance are ripe fields for conduct and thoughts of bedlam.
India has a population that is very much effected by a "caste" system. On the streets beggars are seen to line the walk ways where they are tolerated, they know thier places. The English brought a stratum of farther elitism. A great void of economic difference exist between the social groups . That we should hate people for thier impoverished ways is totaly below common thought and bespeaks of a ignorance in its own right. Anyone who can and will do the job people outside our boarders can start work in the morning. Every business is looking for a source of cheap labor, thats the function of business. How many Americans think they are owed a job of lifetime wages and benefits? The will to venture out side ones safe little niche is ignorant and self defeating. Our forefathers ran ahead failures to achieve success, many left multiple failures behind to achieve the "American Dream" People sittinging in places where opportunity no longer exists better wise up. People sitting in houses in communities where unemployment is high better cut ther losses and move to where work exits. |

Lets see, there are a BILLION Indians.
20% are by any standards, middle class. Which, by the way, is a LARGER number of financially secure people than exist in this country. Americans need to see the light. If this country is going to amount to anything in the future, it has to get a LOT SMARTER than what the public school system has produced over the last twenty years. And just what the Hell is this MORAL judgement crap all about? Hell, in THIS country we kill millions of babies in the womb, with a death far worse than being trampled or burned. Death is dead, killers kill. There are no degrees of it. Get a grip. Mike |

As far as kids dying, well they hold a different value of human life there, somewhat like in Kalifornia, they value the lives of animals more than those of people. Hey, it's their country, let them have it, we've got enough problems of our own to worry about.

Muslims absolutely abhor Hindus. Probably as much or worse as they hate Jews.

If we're going to compete for jobs we're going to have to raise our standards and educate our children. The real challenge is to get the children interested in education from an early age. That challenge may be connected with getting the parent(s) involved in the childs education. The Indians are making a big push in the tech industry, investing heavy money in bringing high tech education to their children.

I think "yuppie-dom" has crept into Indian upper middle class society.
From the two independant video reports I saw... The well-to-do parents of deceased children were torn between weeping and threatening to sue!, and blaming everyone from Ghandi to the Queen Mother. Fer cryin' ou loud, this was a tuition supported, PRIVATE school. Parents would take their children to and fro, participate in functions and the like. They had to have interviewed for acceptance, no? So just when did the parents NOT see the danger of fire/smoke. Where were the parents when the tour of the facilities was given. WHat happened to the papers sent home, wailing about funding for the new sprinkler system or fire-proof roof?. OK., so mebbe they didn't send one home for that; but I betcha dollars to donuts, they send 'em home for everything else. BTDT, for too many years, and know better. Granted, the school/admin/staff does have a duty to protect the students to a degree...I can't say whatamount , in this case, tho. While it is a sad event... Just how many poor kids drown in the fricken Ganges each day. Or die from malnutrition..CAUSE THEY REFUSE TO KILL ANIMALS FOR FOOD. Or die from some everyday childhood disease. Prolly a lot more than died in the school fire. With a bazillion folks inhabiting that sub-continent, and way-too-many of 'em in one or two spots...Sorta like a king-size Mogadishu with a couple of skyscrapers... it's *STILL* a third world country (in comparison). So cry me a river! Only reason this made the news as it did is cause someone's got enough "juice" to make it so and blame someone else. Paul

Yeah--easier said than done. Wait till it happens to you and see how much of your investment YOU are willing to eat wneh a lot of homes are for sale because of this 'big sucking sound' to quote Ross Perot. You gotta be about 21 years old tops and college educated to throw out trash like that.
