Parts kit vendors (looking for)
Im about to Attempt to machine a 1911 from raw stock and am thinking of building an amd65 to keep me busy while i collect all the parts etc.
Can anyone point me to a place to buy cheap 1911 parts kits (everything but the frame and slide)? Cheap is the operative word as i just want to see if i can do it and will buy better parts individually for the second pistol if i dont fug up the first one. (Gotta love CNC!). Also looking for an amd65 or ak parts kit til the next shipment of Fal kits (i heard 30,000 coming in?) come in to keep me busy. |

Cheap Parts are going to be just that, cheaply made. Problem is many are soo out of spec, they require extensive fitting.
Every cheap part I ever bought for the 1911 I have since replaced. JW |

Just make sure you heat treat the slide properly. Don't waste all that time machining only to beat the thing so bad it can't be used. Colt learned this the hard way with their 10mm's. They used to only heat treat the front and the rear, but the 10mm beat it so bad they ended up heat treating the entire slide to fix the problem. Now all of their slides (no matter the caliber) are entirely heat treated.
You're going to run into some problems getting square corners around the breech face unless you either broach it or have access to a sinker EDM. You must have a lot of free time as I'm a machinist in a Tool & Die shop and wouldn't even think about doing this as my time is more valueable. It wouldn't take but a few hours of my time to pay for all the parts needed, but I applaud you for doing it. Show us the end results when finished. How do you propose to cut the mag well in the frame? A wire EDM would be the answer for that, but most shops don't have them. |

Do yourself a favor and stay away from that Sarco crap. I know first hand, I have seen the 1911 kits.

FAC has some reasonablely priced 1911 stuff in their catalogue, you might try there. As for an AMD65, you CAN'T go wrong with Centerfire Systems. I know some of the guys and gals there and their items are usually better than advertised and rite now they have kits for $79. If you don't have a wire EDM for the mag well the second best option would be to broach cut it, the CNC out any areas around where the grips go. I would be interested to see the finished product, please post pics. Good Luck

thanks all
With such bad reviews on the sarco stuff ill take your advise. Saving money is good but throwing away $100 is bad.
Thanks idsubgun. Actually atm im planning on finishing the magwell the old fashioned way... with a file. I actually have been considering building a very small "home edm" aka Upscale tap remover for things like that lately. Graphite cutoffs are cheap. I plan on eventually building a kiln for casting and will be able to use it for heat treating.. i hope. Ill probably have the pistol(s) professionally heat treated though. Thanks a Lot for the tip on the breech face. I'm a programmer/web designer/seo etc etc. I hear/see/talk to amateurs who want to write something, design a new cgi/php web app etc and think like you.. "its just not worth the time involved.. buy an off the shelf solution".. but its not about that. Its about creating. I think you know exactly what i mean considering your chosen profession (wish id taken your route). I dont honestly like to shoot that much. The guns i get the most honest kick out of are small cal revolvers to "blast" with and seeing how accurate i can be with small caliber rifles. Dont know why.. building a 1911 is about the beauty. Its EASIER to build something like an SVI. But old 1911's, 1903's etc are truely works of art. Of beauty. Worthy of creation, admiration and ownership even if they are never shot. Again im thinking you know what i mean I could have access to the one of the most advanced machine shops in the state i Think. A guy who used to be my best friend is an executive with Atlas and his father is one of the owners. Havent seen him in years though.Armour ill be happy to post them when its done. It will be a while though.. i just blew my controller and had to have it repaired. I was thinking centerfire too. Anyone interested in this check out http://www.cncgunsmithing.com . The guy is freaking Amazing. He buys pro quality machines but its not the machines.. its his talent.. BTW if anyone has any info on the Beretta 92 (cad, more blueprints, measurements.. anything) Both he and i would greatly appreciate it. |
