looking for general info about my imbel rifle

i have an imbel rifle that is stamped r1a1 ,is that one of those century rifles that alot of the people around here talk so highly of (not). it seems to be an inch pattern built on an imbel metric receiver.at some point iwould like to put a shorter barrel on it to make it a carbine. is this possible and feasible should i go with metric or inch ,do i have a choice, which is better quality inch or metric? it seems to me that the metric after market parts are more plentiful than inch.i also have a problem with the sights the rear aperture is very large and iam not very experienced with military peep sights is there a set of after market iron sights for the accuracy impaired such as my self . i know i have asked alot of questions so please be patient with me. any information know matter how remote it is will be greatly appreciated . thanks alot .....dill

If your barrel is good have Moses cut it for you.

DSA sell a hooded Israeli rear. You need it all.

here ya go DH. you may have to enlarge the gas port also depending on your rifle and how far back you cut. again, a simple operation.

you will need a taller (inch, or better as elbo said the izzy) rear sight once the barrel is shortened. as far as the gas port goes, i believe the factory spec is .098"
when you drill, protect the bore by inserting a cleaning rod or dowel to catch the bit. work your way up until you're happy with your gas setting. i recently built a 16.5" carbine that runs great midway thru the regulator's adjustment after i drilled with a 7/64 bit.

OT that 'booger-pickin' thing always gives me a chuckle!
