Got two kits from GunStuf/FAC a couple weeks ago.One was a G3 select kit which was very nice.No reciever yet,I havent decided and short on cash. The other kit was the Polish underfolder. It was beautiful. Not mint but what little surface rust there was was very minor and it looked like the rifle had basically sat somewhere. It was a matching #s set with both trunions and all the pieces for the under-folder set up.Came with a 30 rd mag,and pouch, with a cleaning kit and sling. All parts neatly dissassembled and in little bags.Rivets completely removed from trunions, and front trunion seperate from barrel. The only bad part of the kit was the bakalite pistol grip,it looked like hell, but I couldnt care less,it will be replaced. The sheet metal looked great,no dents. The bolt group, while not chromed looked like it hadnt fired 20 rounds, and the bore was beautiful with what looked like a brand new chamber. The FCG didnt look like it was anything but test fired, and all parts were virtualy free of grease with just a light coat of oil on them.
The reciever I chose was the one from Ohio Ordanance Works after reading the different posts and saw alot of good reviews on them.It came with no trunion holes drilled, hardened FCG pin holes and extractor.A great looking piece of work, and I had 3 to choose from(shop ordered extras) so I went down to Garys Guns with verniers in hand and ended up just grabbing one, they all measured same dimensions and showed equal quality work. I just finished the rough build last night. without the stock attatched yet and no finishing on metal parts yet.I heated the trunion up in the oven (after tapping the threads)and it slid on the barrel without a prob(it had about .002 press fit).Finished tapping the other holes and made a backing plate for the trigger guard to attatch to.Being a matching #s kit with low miles,a cartridge slid right in and bolt closed perfectly. The trunion holes I drilled with little probs and I thinned out the safety stop to tighten up the mag engagement a little.Just to test fire,I dropped in the needed FCG from the kit and took it out back to try it out. It shot 20rds without a snag, feeding perfectly,Music to my ears! Ive got a trigger set ordered from DPH off of the AK Files, next door and now I have to decide how I want to finnish it. A very nice kit and reciever Thanks a bunch to Harlon at FAC,The guys at Ohio Ordanance Works and Gary at Garys Guns in Muskegon Michigan

I hate to ask a dumb question, but sometimes it's the only way to learn. Your build sounds similar to others I have heard done. Do I understand you correctly in saying you are tapping the rivet holes in the trunnions and then using screws to fix the trunnions to the receiver? Second, if you have a matching parts kit, do you need to watch the headspacing? Shouldn't it be correct from the factory? I have a IO Russian RPK parts set, matching, I have been waiting to build. I still haven't decided if I want to machine the front trunnion of the RPK to fit in the AKM receiver or press the wider bumps in a new receiver. That would be more correct, but a chance of screwing up a new receiver.

R1: 1st- Yep,Its a screw build.I used 10x32 1/4" long button head allen bolts for most of the holes and I think 3/8 long in the rear(cause I run outta 1/4,and they shouldnt be in the way) I put a .060 thick washer under the screws in the front trunion to keep them from bottoming out on the barrel. On the trigger guards front four ,I used 8x32 and screwed them into a plate I made with 4 holes drilled and tapped into it,sandwiching the reciever and saftey stop between them. The plate is just a piece of scrap galvanized I had kicking around, measured .100 thick.
2nd) If the #'s on the underside of the barrel and the reciever jive, the head space should be as good as it was when it was pressed apart.Trouble is when you go and press them together ,careful you dont go to far.The trunion might slide past the point of alignment, and have to be pressed backwards a hair.Mine did ,but I tried 3 different brands of ammo and the bolt closed fine so I removed the small ledge(probably .015 or less) to be able to press the pin in. Its your call on the reciever bumps, myself,I see AK's as toys and dont really worry about originality, just asthetically to my own eyes and taste. .........now a FAL would be another story Theres proper.........and then theres PROPER! I think Im gonna try for the PSG1 look on my HK kit. Vince) If you mean the cut-out when its in safe, thats O.K. I guess.I only half looked at it up there, but it looks like it will just clear,HOWEVER the bottom didnt line up with the stop,as it was to wide(fore to aft)when in"fire" and when I was thinning out the stop for the mag fit ,I narrowed the lip by about .150",and it still needs some work. The rifle is together now without the saftey as I only wanted to see it shoot and cycle ammo. After a healthy dose of BBQ this afternoon,I will continue 'tweeking' on it.I still need to install the folding stock and re-finish the wood........maybye?

Ultramag, Thanks for the detailed info. Screws sound better than rivets to me. I have been to OOW around 20 times in the last 20 years and you would die if you saw all they have had over the years! 4'x4'x4' crates (5) of Sten MkII's 500 Thompson 1928's dropped to the Greeks by Britian during WWII. 200 MG34 lafettes. I once had to climb over 100 Colt 1917 tripods to get at a 5'square box of MG34 spare barrel carriers, many with the unissued barrel still in them! Their vault gives you a shiver. You name it, they've had it. The MAG58 is the one I wanted most of the lot. God I love this hobby!
