Boyd's Walnut Garand stock

I just put a Boyd's walnut on one my M1's. The wood looks really nice, and I don't mind the extra thickness. It took a little bit of fitting to get the tigger guard to close, but that's fine too. It's easier to take away than add if the fit is too loose. The front handguard is cut a little off center. It's not to the extent that Gunplumber's was and it's cosmetically acceptable to me, but it is binding the operating rod, so I have to relieve it some. Boyd's sure does take a beating over on CSP, and I would rate the Boyd's a step or two below the old Fajens, but at $80.00 from Midway I would buy another one.

**Update: the metal liner in the handguard was bent down a little, and that's what was binding the operating rod. I straightened it out with a wooden dowel and a hammer, and all is well.

I think it may be the luck of the draw with Boyd's. You can see mine in the images section. I had none of the problems described here but the rear radius behind the receiver doesn't follow the contour of the receiver very well. Who cares?! It's a battle rifle replacement! Not a show piece. I'd buy ten more if I needed them for the $78 and change that Boyd's sells them for over their website.

CSP is another forum. People tend to get bashed alot there. Good for M1 Carbine and Garand info mainly. But you do have to step through the crap sometimes. -myers

These stocks seem to be all the rage so I got one from Midway. Everything went together very well, I didn't do anything other than trim off some fuzzy ends in the inletting. I bought new metal parts to complete the handguards at the last fun show. The guy selling the parts was also a Garand smith and insisted on tweaking the parts so the fit perfectly.

The wood is plain walnut, nothing fancy. My stock has one very small knot. As delivered, the stock barely had any finish on it, like one coat of linseed oil. Although I was told they are not stained, a rag wiped on the stock had a red tinge to it. I put two light coats of Truoil on it and I'm most satified with the finish. It doesn't look like a true Garand finish but the old stock didn't fair too well with plain old BLO so this one got a more modern finish.

Everybody says these stocks are fat but it's barely thicker than the Danish stock that the rifle came with. If it really bothers you, you could sand it down.

If you have a Garand with a beat up stock, these are great.

It's not a Garand stock, but I'll throw in my $.002 anyway. I got 2 of there Mauser stocks last summer and I'm not happy with them at all. The inletting on a "finished" stock is pretty rough and not to proper depth or size in most areas and in some is well oversize. The barrel channel is out of line by almost 3/16" at the forend and the mag box inletting was a good 3/16" too narrow. These have taken a LOT of work and still arent completed to my satisfaction. Compaired to the old Fajens inletting jobs, these arent even a far second. I have a few of them from years ago and did'nt have to do much more than open the barrel channel and bed them. The price wasent bad but after all this work, I wont order another from them.
