After 6 years... here I am.
I'm a pistol shooter from origin, but wanted something different 6 years ago. Something that looks cool and makes lots of noise. Ended up with my STG58. Completely original from Steyr. Surplus, non-fired from the Swiss army. For less than $400. I'm from The Netherlands, so I don't have to worry about US made magazine springs etc (but hey, at least you guys can buy 50AE Desert Eagles).
What was supposed to be a joke, became serious, and still is. This is the thing, that will have to do in competition, and it does. Even got some trophy's. A couple of days ago I found these boards, and it's been overwhelming. This is science. And, as far as I can comprehend, it caught me. I want to know, what the real limit is for me, considering limited budget. So far I: - Ordered a scope. Mount will follow next month. I intend to use it to test reloads. My first goal is, to optimize ammo. Don't forget to try the heavier 168 grainers. Forget about using the bipod when testing. Bummer, would have been fun to use that thing for once. - Forget about the swing. What a surprise! My scores improved drasticly when I started to use a swing. I now know about the existance of free floating hand guards. Maybe some time... - I need a trigger job (something I already knew). Militairy Rifle competition here requires a pull of >3lbs. Mine is at least double. I need Ron's springs. - Do something about the rear sight. It kinda wobbles. (Too bad that the little crosshair front sight is not allowed here in competition). - Clean barrel. Lazy me is used to cleaning his STG only once a year... (and it keeps going....)- Make sure hand guard screw is tight. - Keep reading the falfiles. Some things are easy to try and/or apply and don't even cost a penny. Thanks guys! |

Welcome,
If you don't like cleaning your barrel maybe you ought to consider using moly coated bullets. A lot of NRA (and CMP) highpower shooters here in the USA use them, myself included. If you shoot competively go check out www.jousters.com it is a good site and has shooting, reloading etc there. I was in Amsterdam last October on Vacation. wonderfull place. Love that Trappist Ale beer. I was sitting on the East (?) side of the Dam Square slurping that heavenly necter. Bob |

Re:
What a warm welcome!
About the firearm laws... Our NRA is called KNSA. The ONLY purpose of the KNSA is shooting sports. No .50 calibers allowed, because KNSA has no competition for them. Silhouette shooting is recognized, and maybe a .50AE would be possible, but to find a club for silouette shooting is hard, and I would have to drive 2 hours or more. In order to own a firearm, you need to be a member of a shooting club for at least a year. Within that year, you need to collect stamps in your "passport". You get a stamp for every practice. After a years membership, you can buy your first gun. The club has to sign a form, in which they state, that you're using that gun for competition shooting at that club. You need at least 12 stamps. After you have owned your first gun for a year, you can buy more guns. The max number of firearms you can own is 5. For 5 arms you need 35 stamps, every year. Every year you have to show up at the police station, and have them verify your stamps, in order to have your license renewed for another year. No 2nd ammendment here, no self- and home defense. Nothing on nightstands. Everything has to be kept is a safe, and the police is allowed to inspect the way (and where!) you keep your guns. Transport only from/to club, match or gunsmith, shortest way. Our country is small. Ground is expensive. To find a place for long range shooting is getting harder. Ranches are being closed down, due to environmental regulations and laws. Our club is all indoor, and we shoot at 10 and 12 (only .22) and also at 25 and 50 meters. Official distance for militairy rifle matches is 100 meters (~110 yards) Greetings, F4E Btw. 1 euro = 1,22 dollar today. Makes internet shopping quite interesting these days. |

Re:
KIITOS!
That's all I remember from my vacation in '98. Been in and around Oulu for 2 weeks. Beautiful country! There are clubs here with 100m accomodations, some even indoor. Army and police ranches are getting less and less. Partly because of reorganisations, partly because of environment (pollution). You can rent a lane in the weekends. No IPSC so far. I still don't have a license, and I'm thinking about doing the exam somewhere this summer. Maybe us dutch like handicaps, because I'll be using Desert Eagles Gunlaws are easier in the countries around us, except England. |

Ok, won't take $500? I tell you what, I'll solve both our problems: I will send you a 500 S&W in fair trade for your STG!
Seriously, I love my 500, but your rifle sounds like a real beauty! I am very happy to hear there are people enjoying the shooting sports all over, but here in the USA I always forget how good we have it. Then I remember how much better we had it! If you ever make it to Boston/Vermont area I will be glad to take you for some plinking Vt range style: "no one's posted this sandpit yet... fire on the line!" |

Re:
I would take the S&W500, but... it's illegal here. And I wonder if it would be possible to get my gun over there anyway.
And honestly, my STG ain't nothing special. I saw a post here somewhere, asking who's the best gunsmith for building /putting together a FAL. And I almost replied "STEYR", because they made and build mine. We don't do uppers and lowers here, you just buy a Belgian, English, Austrian or Israeli FAL. Most people here avoid the English L1A1, Steyr is considered top. FN and Israeli do have some collecters value. |
