recoil tube problem
Now that I resolved the two other problems I am left with another. My plunger in the recoil tube isn't fully up against the hole in the lower. When I let go of the charging handle, the bolt closes but the bolt carrier is open ~1/2". How can I get the plunger back to the right spot?

Here are a few suggestions.
Look in the tube with the plunger/springs removed and see if there is an obstruction. It could be a bent/dented tube. Double check head space. If the headspace is too tight, it could cause the symptom that you described. Check to ensure that the extractor has sufficient clearance. You may need to remove some metal from the receiver. Remove the bolt from the carrier, reinsert the carrier only into the receiver and see if it will go full forward. The ejector block may be mounted too high. There could also be a tight spot in the receiver rails causing the carrier to bind. |

What kind of kit are you using? Imbel, L1A1, STG58??? If this is an Imbel kit, have a look at the extractor on the bolt. Some of them are 'extra wide' and you'll need to releive the receiver or get a standard extractor. I had this problem on my GB Imbel kit. I fixed it by cutting a small (1/32) sliver out of the extractor relief slot on the receiver and the barrel. The barrel relief slot for the extrator was to narrow also. Good luck on your project!

I have found that if you use a screw that is to long in the tang behind the pistol grip it will hit and dent the recoil spring tube.
The burr can be polished out with a wood dowel with sand paper glued on it. Something to check. Good Luck, Court in FL. |

The tube looks clean and clear of everything. The headspace is right and the carrier will close all the way. It's an Imbel kit and this just happened. I noticed the plunger didn't go to its normal position and I haven't done anything with the recoil tube. I might try the sandpaper on a dowel trick. What grit should I use?

How would I use steel wool on it? Would I glue it on a dowel as with the sandpaper?
