I should probably know this by now.

The CIA says 60% of Belgium speaks Dutch, the other 40% French.

Oh man...what a terrible question..

Now I have to know, too.

This question will surely consume us all until answered.

Remember that French is really just a bastardized form of Latin.

All the quality French things left France 160 years ago, ask any Huegoneaut (spelling?) though I'm now an Epescapalian(?) --alright 1 or 2 too many Dewer's for the evening. Remember, cheese eating surrender monkey's, used surrplus riifles, carried alot, dopped once--if it wasn't for the French, who would the Mexican's make fun of?

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

It's French.

Head over to babelfish, http://babel.altavista.com/, type in fusil automatique legere, and choose French to English and you get light automatic rifle.

You could be right. While your translator does not handle Dutch/English the one at freetranslation.com does. I put in "light automatic rifle" and told it to translate to Dutch. The answer I got was "Het lichte automatische geweer." So I guess that make a FAL a HLAG in dutch. That simply won't do. Especially that last word. You better smile if you call my FAL a geweer. Although, the last time I drank french beer, I was soon in loo going "hlag...hlaaagg...Hlaaagggg...HLAAAAAGGGGGG!!!!!"

damn.

Belgians speak:
Flemish
Waloon
French
Dutch

Dutch is the official state language.

From CIA factbook
Quote:
Dutch (official) 60%, French (official) 40%, German (official) less than 1%, legally bilingual (Dutch and French)
http://www.ethnologue.com/show_country.asp?name=Belgium is another good source.

Ok...let's break it down. It's just like it sounds...kinda.

Fusil... (needing fuse)

Automatique...(automatic)

Leger...... (quick burning, a.k.a. legendary quick burn)

So the Fal is a black powder gun.

I think this language is Southern Ohio Pigeon English. (SOPE)

Well even if it does have a French name, at least it wasn't designed by the frogs. You can take some consolation in that.

I'm right partial to the notion that it could be Walloon . (Notice that Walloon appears to be correctly spelled with two letters "l.") Anyhow, my preference is on account of that sounds like "saloon." I'm mighty partial to saloons. (Which is spelled with just one letter "l.")

Yessir. I'd say that settles it. Let me get over here and say howdy to Miss Kitty.

Not to burst your bubble (or Walloon), Gary, but Fusil Automatique Legere is French!

Walloon (rhymes with Stallone) is considered as a totally separate language by some. But all Belgians I know really only consider it a dialect of French, with the French calling anyone with the Walloon accent something like a "hick".

Fusil auto

I lived in Brussels for 5 years, until 1997.They in general really like Americans. My neighbors always placed anonymous bouquets of flowers on our door step every year on the anniversary of their liberation from the Nazis. Country has been occupied so many times it is a wonder they aren't born with their hands in the air. The city and generally the nation, is divided into communes, some inhabited by French speaking (Walloons) and others Flemish Speaking (Flemish or Dutch). In each commune only that particular language is spoken, including public schools. Either speak it or starve. Nearly all Flemish folks speak English, identify with Americans and can get by with French. But, very few Walloons speak Flemish or much English, based upon my experience. The Flemish, in my opinion were the ones who owned many of the businesses, including construction and were the predominant local national employees in the American Embassy. Last bit of trivia I recall is they save, nationally 15% of their income! Use of credit cards is nearly unheard of - recall the first time I went to see a doctor and offered payment for tests, etc with my VISA - they immediately felt sorry for me, asking if I had no money. Paid in cash and soon learned that was the rule of the day. Flemish operated some great hospitals there and had some great surgeons, that I can attest to.
Apologies if I offended anyone, just an olde guys opinion.

Walloon ! is considered by most (whate-ver-specialists) to be a separate language, incorporting elements of French, but not a dialect. Perhaps like Newfoundlanders, eh?

Beautiful country and people.

Yes, its French. But, while Americans generally spell it, the Belgians say it "fall" (or "fawl"), so thats how I fool myself.

-BTW, the NL. native I work with says Flemish is just Dutch for Belgians that can't speak Dutch.

I was in Belgium for about a week last year. Visited a few cities in the north and a few in the south. The northern, Dutch/Flemish, all were very freindly and most spoke English very well. The southern, Walloon/French, were slightly less helpful and almost none spoke English or would even pretend to understand English. Now I speak German pretty well and can get by a little in Dutch, French and Spanish, but the French speaking citizens in Belgium were noticeably less "pro-American". The only exeception I found was in Bastogne which is in the south and the people were quite friendly. Just my experience, YMMV.
