7.62x39 in my AR questions?

I've got an itch to add a 7.62x39 upper on my M16. I've searched the board, but still have some questions.

1. Has anyone had good results with the AR47 receiver? without tinkering?

2. Would you suggest the AR47 receiver used w/my LL or just get a upper to use on my RR M16?

3. How robust are they (bolt and carrier)

4. I see several after markets available, MOdel 1, Oly, etc. What's the advantage? Any place have chromed barrels? Are the really necessary.

5. I've read any of the usually junk US mags work well in this caliber. HOw hard is to to weld up a larger AK mag to the bottom of the US mag to get more capacity?

6. General thoughts on my idea. I'd prefer to learn from others mistakes/experience.

I have one of the Colt sporters in 7.62x39.
It runs good and is accurate, shoots about 2 inch groups at 100 yards with Chinese ball.
The 20 and 30 round .223 mags work with 5 to 7 rpunds of 7.62x30 in them.
The mags I use are made from some place out west called G-Tech.
They are chopped AK mags with a steel AR type tower welded to them and they work well, they hold at least 30 rounds. I think I paid about $40.00 each for them.

I have not had any major trouble with the rifle since I bought it around 1994.

I even have a sound suppressor for it, works good with sub-sonic 7.62x39.

Short answer, the bolt face is opened from 5.56 to accept 7.62, weakening the lugs, so the bolt WILL break, about every few thousand rounds. But stripped bolts are around $40, so if you are not trusting your life to the gun, it is not a big issue.
I believe the carrier needs some work to accept the AK mags with the AR47 lower, but it is a dedicated upper anyway.

Rick In Vegas on the boards has one well used in AR47 form, and likes.

Also the upper's to work correctly on the AR47 have to be modified for the AK mag's to be able to feed correctly.

Check out AR15.com - I remember a couple of threads and one on Assultweb.com - people do tend to like them.

USA brand 10rd Colt 7.62x39mm AR mags work from CDNN work great.
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/7610blusteel.html

Bought a cheap sheet metal unmarked 20rd mag from Shotgun News for $15. Think it was from What a Country. Had to file mag catch slightly, looks ugly but works ok.

Bit more recoil than .223, and some of the russian ammo leaves a good amount of powder residue. To avoid laquer issues with WOLF ammo you might want to look for older Norinco non-corrosive.

Another option is Non-corrosive brass cased 7.62x39mm ammo from Zimbabwe Defense Industries http://www.vectorarms.com/indexframe.html

I would go with the upper on an M16. I've used one with a LL and the paddle gets really really really beaten up. An extra strength spring and heavier buffer reduced paddle beatings somewhat but still evident. The USA 30rd mags with the AK body works great too. You can't weld your own mags until the mag ban expires in Sept. I've over 9k rounds thru a Model 1 upper without problems; still on original bolt. Chrome won't make a difference unless you don't like cleaning. I'm debating now if I should go with a shortie upper in this caliber.

Yes as posted above the 10 round USA 7.62x39 mags work great in you 762 AR, i own a DPMS.

The high caps are hard to find but can be found at gun shows.
I remeber when CDNN was selling them for $19.99 a piece, i bought a dozen.

Gotta love it.

You combination AK AR mag. Is not legal per ATF ruling a high capacity magazine converted for a deferent firearm must work in the original firearm it was made for. This is why ArmaLite AR10 mags. Retain the M14 lug in the rear and will work in AR10 and M14-M1A

Check out this site:

www.ar47.com

I have seen their weapons and they look good. With the mods to the upper and their Lower, you can use standard AK mags, including drums, with no problems.

To see one in action click this link. CLICK THE FIRST DOWNLOAD BUT DO NOT CLICK THE SECOND DOWNLOAD. Instead, right click and "SAVE AS", then open the temp file with video player.

Don't remember where I got the video, just though it was neat.

I have an AR-47. Now that I have it broken in (couple hundred rounds) it works great. Best way to go if you want a 7.62x39 AR IMHO.

WHo did you have do the work on your upper when using the AR47? Did you have it done when you ordered the reciever?

I'm still debating whether to add a AR47 receiver and use mags I already own, or just get an upper and buy the USA mags.

I'm thinking that you could make the current AR/AK mags a large capacity by welding on the lower half of a AK 40 rounder. At least after the ban expires.

I bought mine from a gun dealer in AZ that had it advertised on Gunbroker. It was sold as a complete gun. He had ordered it from SW which also happens to be in AZ. I got the 20" barrel version. If you look at www.ar47.com there is a contact to a gunsmith who can do the upper & bolt carrier modifications though. The key is to make sure the mags have smooth feed lips. I had some new Romanians that didn't work properly until they were polished a bit on top. My used Chinese 30rd & Hungarian 20rd mags work great. In the long run it is much nicer not to have to screw with those overpriced cobbled together USA mags.
