Unhappy help w/bolt

Newbie so any help or sugestions will be great. I have started my first build! Barrel timed to 11 o'clock got my 7 US comp. parts the problem I have is when I pull the charging handel it binds, I have looked at the lug and it doesn't look wore out also looked at the bolt carrier shoulder where the CH lug engages the BC and it also looks ok, could it be that the CH is to loose or should I replace either the CH or BC, One last thing does anyone in Houston, TX have a barrel vise and reciever wrench that you are willing to rent me? TIA

Remove the bolt carrier, then slide the CH to see if it binds, then manually move the carrier back and forth to feel for any binding in the movement. The carrier should move freely in the receiver. If there is a binding of the carrier then it is possible the receiver sides are bent in slightly. Have you ever put the receiver in a vise?. A fal receiver is fairly easy to squash in a vise, particularly the CH side. If the receiver is slightly squashed it can be straightened fairly easily. I know about that.

I have checked for that and both move freely by themself, it is only when both are together and I pull on the charging handle that it gets stuck about 1/3 of the way, I then slap it foward and they unstick, I try to charge it again and it sticks again, I have not yet been able to use the charging handle once without problems.

Have you timed your barrel to 12 noon yet. If not the that is probably the reason for binding. The extractor is riding over the breech and jamming between it and the receiver.

Describe everything completely. What brand of receiver do you have? Is it doing this with rifle fully assembled? Lower receiver on upper and bolt and carrier assembled? If the binding occurs on the assembled rifle then I would look at the recoil spring/tube for a problem. Maybe one of the more experienced board smiths will step in to help here as I have not had this problem on any of mine.

My guess, and this is a guess, is that you have a TAPCO charging handle. (old style) If so, back it off about two full turns and check it again. If it runs free locktight it in place.
Ask me how I know.

I ran in to something like this once,

If you look at the front left corner of the bolt carrier there is a little notch
where the lug on the cocking handle catches.

I had a Enterprise receiver that would let the lug on the cocking handle slip
past this little notch and it would lock up the carrier in the receiver rails.

I ended up fitting the lug deeper in to the cocking handle so it would not slip out of the little notch at the front of the carrier.

If you are useing the TAPCO cocking handle it could be the screw as was pointed out by sslocal.

It is a complete lower [Imbel] on a metric Century rec. original bolt and bolt carrier the barrel is off, extractor is not binding, but from Court in FL's image his bolt carrier looks like it is all square where the lug engages and straight on down, the other side it looks square then curves, mine looks like it is curved on both sides, but looks like it was made that way because it still has some of the original finish, not very bright shiny like if it where worn. maybe the lug on my CH is little rounded anyone know where I can get a new lug to try out?

If the corner of the lug is rounded I think you can turn the lug around, but you will need to drill or file a new notch for the pin that holds it in.

Or just square up the edge of the lug with a file.

Gumaro,
I live in Kingwood. I have a receiver wrench, but no barrel vise. I normally stick the receiver wrench with receiver into the vise and use a wrench on the barrel flats. I will be out of town this weekend, but could be available next week after work if you wanted me to stop by and help you barrel and headspace your rifle (you would need to have a reasonable vise).

Let me know.

Something else to consider here..

Is it possible that the binding occurs as the carrier rides against and over the Hammer spur. ???

Does the carrier bind only with a dust cover or scope mount installed ?

Tis a good question Rich. I had an Inch trigger that came in a metric kit that made this happen. The bolt hammer would stick in place if in the semi position, causing the bolt to be stuck if the hammer was not down.
