G1 variant

Figured I would add to Flypapers "variant" thread collection:

"Thought I would set up some specific variant image threads that "We" could add to and have a great collection of specific variants for reference.
Any stage of build would be great.
Many variants, I don't have and will need help getting those threads started."

G1, numbers match with BlueMonster wood

G1 kit on DSA G1 receiver.

Here with new butt stock and black plastic handguards. I kinda like the plastic G1/STG handguards. They look nice and my hands won't get burned shooting it.

This is my German G1 beauty with some accessories.
The rifle grenade launcher is an experimental early type used by the BGS.

Rifle has German military stock number and was made in 11/1957.

With best wishes
Michael

How about a Rhodie G1? Not quite done yet, needs the receivers stressed to look like the barrel, but original Rhodie used G1 lower and barrel.

Thought I'd toss mine in the hat. Here's my G1 built on an Imbel NGL receiver. Originally had a different lower; it was goofed up by Century--the 'auto' marking was welded over and the bottom part of the 'E' was welded over to make it an 'F'. The selector axis hole was also very worn, which caused it to fit very loosely. I obtained the lower seen here from am member here and, since the condition matched the rest of the gun, I assembled as-is. The original stock was a type-C with a very nice ferrule, the original PG was a standard plastic unit. I snagged this type-B stock on Gunbroker for $28 shipped, one coat of BLO, and installed. The strong rack number paint is a bonus, hard to believe it's still so sharp. The wood PG I also obtained from a fellow 'Files member...couple of coats of BLO and installed. The interesting thing about the stock and the PG is that NEITHER ONE had ANY CRACKS! Not a one! Sure, they both have their share of dents and dings, but what G1 didn't? I'm ecstatic they are so solid, both outstanding purchases. They go quite well together, and it almost seems they were previously split up, but by luck have been reunited. Somehow, the trigger on this gun is probably the best of all my FALs. Who knew haha Also wears an original G1 leather sling. Anywho, enjoy

I keep flip-flopping on my current G1 build to leave it BFPU or refinish when done and running. I had mostly decided to refinish. Your BFPU pix did not help me settle on doing that however

Yeah, my picture links in the thread documenting this build are all dead. I had been using "uploadly" for photo hosting and it just up and went out of business. I am slowly migrating to photobucket and revisiting my old threads and updating the photo links. Major pain in the A$$!....

G1 B – Stocked Eagle Proof-Marked Build

I’ve completed my B-stocked G1 eagle proofed parts build. Thus far I have an eagle proof-marked barrel, lower, flashhider, bolt, carrier, rear swivel, charging handle, and a type B stock with the Bundeswehr eagle cartouche. The lower is marked with a larger than usual eagle proof with letters above the number and it is marked on the left side near the butt end of the lower.

As far as I know, concerning the models you specify, BGS were all type 1. G1 seem to have started out with all type 1 but there are pics of a rare type 2 out there, IIRC. StG had all of the primary types, 1,2, and 3.

BGS, safe with a T1.
G1, safe with a T1 or a T2, T1 way more common.
StG, safe with all types, if you want accuracy it will depend on your kit's serial number range.

This is one of those areas in the FAL world where as soon as someone says "never" or "always" someone else will come along with proof to the contrary.

First month production matching numbers G1,(Bundeswehr), with BM English Walnut on DSA forged G1 receiver. Fresh hot blued finish and heated linseed on wood.

Only G1 that I've held onto.

Question BGS vs G1

What is the difference(s) between a BGS with a "B" stock and a G1 with a "B" stock?

Did either (or both) models ever use a "C" stock and if so what other parts were wood on either (or both) model(s)?

Of course as you all may know I'm still relatively new to the FAL and both the BGS and G1 recent photo postings (AWESOME JOB ON BOTH !!!) appear very similar to me and I really dont know what to look for to tell the difference between the two.

Rifle shoots very well too, although I have not shot since the hot blue.

Read through this thread on the Bundesgrenzschutz(BGS) Rifles. It contains all you need to know and then some.

LOL ... thanks for the link but I've already been there and the beauty of all the examples there gets me sidetracked too often.

Any way you can sum up an answer in short?

Short answer is the BGS Model C and Bundeswehr G1 are essentially the same rifle.

Early production rifles of both models wore type B buttstocks and wood pgs. Some very early rifles wore wood CHs. The type C buttstocks appeared a bit later and most rifles by then had plastic pgs and chs. An earlier produced rifle could be retrofitted later on with the later style parts as replacements during overhaul/rebuild and you can also find a mix of late/early usable parts.

So your choice.

If an early or very early produced G1, I prefer the type b with wood pg/ch.

Go back and reference post 402 in the BGS thread, that is a great starting point for Models/Types.

Regards,

SD

Both models throughout the all years used metal hand guards correct?

FYI ... I'm also asking these details because I am finally learning there were Type 1 and 2 lower receivers with varying lightening cuts, etc., that I did not know about before so I'm trying to nail all that down also. Just discovered the existence of these differences this past week.

Both the G1 and Model C used the horseshoe type metal handguards with 90 degree angle at front of HG's where bipod legs meet metal. The StG while similar, had an angular shape in this area.

The Model B originally wore non-horseshoe metal HG's. Again, don't associate model of rifle with type of buttstock or you'll get confused.
