Ouch!,

Besides the cardboard how were they packed? Was that in battle packs?

This was pulled from a battle pack last year and transferred to a GI can in the cardboard. All my Port is looking rough but this is the worst I've seen.

That doesn't look too good. I'd probably not shoot some of that as the brass could be compromised.

I love surplus ammo but there reaches a day when it's time to set it free.

Wouldn't Shoot That ... !!!!!!!

I'd go thru it and look for pink spots under all that black stuff ... looks like a blown out mag at the very least ... !!~

The cardboard is the problem. I have opened battle packs of port and found somewhat the same as you have. Most of it was tarnished but none of if showed pink pitting. I have tumbled it and put it loose in a can. It's been in cans for 4 years with no signs of the tarnish progressing.
Needless to say I am shooting up the worst of it first. YMMV

So this came out of pristine boxes looking like that ?

I had small amount of corroded looking port that came fresh out of a battle pack, but the paper boxes seemed 'soft' and kind of off color..
IMHO, it looked more like the product of some storage condensation issues, rather than a chemical reaction with acidic cardboard...or maybe adding moisture to the cardboard has more to do with it..

Ive got cases of other port that all seems just fine in the exact same boxes, to include m80, m193 & m855 types...
It was all pulled from any battle packs, opened, inspected and repacked in ammo cans 2 years ago.

Once ammo comes out of the battle packs mine goes into a can with a VCI strip stuck to the inside of the lid. I have to store my cans in the garage (fiancée bitched when I stacked them in the corner of the bedroom closet) heat humidity and all. Oldest has been stored this way only 3 years but no signs of corrosion. YMMV

Brother that's what is called a clue.......if it's there now it'll only get worse.
Gotta find one that either wants her own stack of cans or looks at your stack and says...."we need more!"

Just checked mine, all is good to go, of course, the 59 VW bug is also rust free!!!!!

Ya just got to love southern Arizona, where men will age, but never grow rusty!

Toss that mucky lot into a tumbler and run it for an hour or two, most of the tarnish will come off, check for any rust through cases, pull those bullets, reload into new brass and repeat every 20 or 30 years.

I sold truck loads of Portugese (FNM) 7.62x51 and other calibers that looked like polished jewelry, so pretty. Then some started showing up with little spots. Most not too bad. Nothing like this rotten stuff.

Never saw this brass acne on the FNM 9mm, 5.56, or 7.62x39.

I'm convinced it's only cosmetic. I'd say the oxide(?) layer is .0005 in depth. Easily scratched off with a knife.

Folks should have seen our issue ammo after two or three weeks in the rain.
And it worked just fine, looking far worst than this.

I had bought a battle pack of port 91 that looked a little worse than that
Upon cutting it open the stinky boxes had moldy spots and some green corrosion on the cartridges
I scrubbed it off with maroon scotch brite and slopped some polish on them during some TV time
I used to shoot a lot of that stuff about 10 or so years ago

I've got a couple un-opened crates. Mebbe I should put this ahead of the SA in the rotation cycle.

I shot Argentine surplus that looked worse than that. Some of the best-shooting surplus ammo I've shot.

I had one battle pack of Port left, checked it - it was fine marked as BF 70 - it was sparklingly clean. Other Port., from the recent past that was not - 70, was marked as yours was - - 80's! I did the CLR thing, cleaned up nicely - no pink, and shot fine - all gone!
