My 1st Garand!

I have to say that this is the first rifle I have ever bought. I got an old .22 from my grandpa when he passed away some years ago, since then I have built all of my FALs, AKs and ARs myself from kits and receivers.

I have always wanted an M1 but all of them I see at local gun shows are way expensive and honestly I don't know a lot about the ins and outs of various parts and values associated with them nor do I trust half the guys that I see selling at the local shows anyway.

I got signed up with CMP and I sent in an order on 6/12 for a Service Grade M1 at $750. I received an order acknowledgement email with a customer number and login on 7/28 and my order status popped up on the CMP website a week later.. This past Monday (about 8 weeks to the day that I sent my order) my card got hit with the charge and I received a FedEx delivery text 3 days later. This morning it was delivered.

So basically this is pretty exciting for me.

What was in the box was a Springfield Armory with a serial number in the January 1943 production range.

The "box" photos:

Comes in a nice hardshell case:

The angels sing:

Did a basic field strip.. The metal and finish is all in real good condition, no rust, no pitting, a lot of park still there. The stock is OK, a lot of oil/grease/dirt and a few dings but still has a good Springfield Armory cartouche:

Here she is:

I'm going to try some mild soap to get some of the heavier grime off the buttstock but overall I want to try to preserve the stock and keep it "as is" as much as possible.

I was handed my first M1 Garand 55 years ago at Fort Leonard Wood. I was only seventeen years old and had just graduated from high school.

It was a Korean war era H&R that looked almost new. Put about 1200 rounds through it during firearms training. Got to know the thing very well....

I have owned three Garands over the years. Two SA's and one IHC. Still have a 1945 SA in the safe. Got a bunch of .30 M2 Ball tucked away with clips. Need to take it out and get reacquainted with it.

You did very good with your CMP M1. Locally I have seen rack grade M1's that are mix masters in the $1200 range and up. Hang on to it and cherish it.

And so it goes.

Beautiful! All you need is BLO to clean up that stock. Very nice to get a surplus stock. More and more from the cmp come with new stocks. Enjoy!

Now you have to post a pic of you pointing the gun and saying "GET OFF MY LAWN"! Seriously though, do you know if this is this one of the Philippine Garands? Hoping so because it appears to be in decent shape. Was told earlier this year that they would be selling them full force by December at the latest.

I wonder what happened to all of the tens of thousands of M1 Garands that were given to the South Vietnamese Army.

Probably dropped and picked up the NVA or VC.....

And so it goes.

Very nice.
Now flip the sling over 180 deg so the keeper latch in on the inside and you will be good to go.
Love the M1s and M14s.

They didnít say but based on internet reports itís either one of the last Turkish rifles or one of the first Philippine. Iíve read that most of the Turkish rifles had the later lighter colored stocks and many were in rough shape. Who knows how true that is as the CMP doesnít really seem to make those types of anouncememts as far as I can tell.

Folks set them up differently, but in the Marine Corps when I was issued and M1 and then the M14 we did it this way.

Oh, we were talking Garands Eh. Here is one of mine with a sling installed.

I agree, they are the Cadillac of firearms!! Whenever I go to the rifle range I bring a dozen or so rifles to shoot, I usually wind up shooting a mag or 2 out of 2 or 3 of them before I go to the M1, then it's all over for the others, they never make it out of the cases. There is just something about the M1 Garand. I enjoy them WAY more than my AR's & AK's. I "might" even enjoy them more than my FAL's!!!!

Didn't take them long to burn through 13 thousand rifles did it?

Whenever mine goes with me, I always bring extra ammo in
case someone wants to try it that never has.

That ping makes everyone grin.

Have fun.

I have had a bunch of them, mostly CMP back in the early 90s. I have a totally righteous 12/54 H&R that will be planted with me when I pass, and it shoots very well thank you.
