It's always a surprise when Hesse does something right

True enough...

Steven Matthews in the Shotgun News (2nd part of article just out) assembled an AR-10 type rifle from a kit purchased from Blackthorne. It's clear from his comments about Blackthorne that he didn't have a clue that he was talking about Robert Hesse, so it looks like the name-change to Blackthorne worked for Hesse.

Then again, you'd expect that Matthews would have known...

To make a long story longer, Matthews ran into a number of problems with the Blackthorne kit, including a barrel loose in the upper receiver (check out his SGN article)...

I'm happy that you came out ahead of the game, stonewall...

Out of thousands of kits sold, they were bound to accidentally get one right!

I got a good barrel from them - now I am spooked that I know who they are.

It's like that moment you realize you sent Dana Reed a MO for $500.00

Stonewall- just be careful. Blackthorne used to be Vulkan, used to be Hesse. There is a reason for so many name changes. They are know throughout the internet firearms comunity to overcharge on substandard parts and builds

I have a co-worker who believes strongly in the lowest possible cost for his ARs. He's purchased several kits from Blackthorne and has been very happy with them--till this past week. He assembled a carbine and took it to the range, only to find it wouldn't feed. It appears the chamber was never reamed to final dimensions. A cartridge will not fully seat so the bolt will not lock.

On the positive side, he called the company and they immediately gave him an RMA to send it back (he mailed it yesterday), but I'll be watching to see how they resolve the problem.

Fortunately, he has plenty of other things to shoot, so he doesn't really NEED this one immediately. I guess for him, the savings are worth the delay.
YMMV.

Like I said before, my Blackthorne SBR 11.5" kit runs perfect, I've shot over 500 rounds through it with out a hitch. Best groups with remington ammo 2" at 50yrds. Surefire 60 functions every time. I'd buy from Blackthorne again.

Matthews should be the Dean of the W.E.C.S.O.G. with all the Ethnically-engineered projects he takes on.
What drives me nuts about that Matthews guy and his articles is that he says he does these builds to save money over buying something store bought. But if the typical person were to take on the same projects, and not have the thousands of dollars worth of shop equipment, we'd be in the hole! I don't think there are a lot of folks out there that have a machine shop in their garage, we'd all like to, but come on here.
That said, if anyone can make a Blackthorne/Vulcan/Hesse P.O.S. work, I would think he would be the man to do so.

Earlier, I mentioned a co-worker who had good luck with several Blackthorne kits until the last one wouldn't chamber a round. The company sent an RMA right away and they had it back to him in about a week. They simply said the headspace was way off and he thinks they just replaced the barrel.
He finished the build, gauged it to be safe, and took it to the range. All is right with the world and he's satisfied.

However, he's lost faith in Blackthorne. Says he won't buy from them again. Not only did the problem delay his build by a week, but it also cost him $30 to ship the barrel back to Blackthorne and, more importantly, it disproved Blackthorne's claim that "all barrels, uppers, and kits are headspaced to MIL-SPEC."

Again, they might offer some good deals, but don't assume everything is "right".
