I talked to my buddy today who lives nearby. He said that eyewitnesses are saying that the guy shot at people a few times, but that most of his firing was up into the ceiling - like he was herding the people in one direction and liked seeing them run.
Also, there are eyewitnesses that are saying that his magazine fell out of the rifle onto the floor, and that he bent down to pick it up again and put it back in the rifle. I doubt it 'jammed'. I bet a bunch he didn't seat the mag (push/pull) properly, and had a malfunction because of it. C'mon guys, I know the AR isn't the FAL of reliability, but even recreational ARs will run 300 rounds without crapping the bed. And tdb59 is right - reporters don't know one thing from another on this topic, so whatever is coming in is a mess. The 'Oregonian' reporter (sports writer?) who happened to go in the mall upon hearing the shooting (maybe directly afterward?) said he heard upwards of 60 shots being fired. I. Doubt. It. But he wrote it, so maybe it's true... Final point - the cops were on this scene and in the mall in a couple of minutes. Whether there were a buncha douches in other places at other times, the Clackamas County guys seems to nail this one down pretty well. I shot a Thunder Ranch class with six or seven Clackamas County guys on two different occasions - they were good guys who would (and in some cases already have) run to the sound of guns. I'd take that bunch on my side - no matter what JasonB says.

Actually, the underfolder AK did jam (carried by the guy on foot), he went to his sidearm and later decided to shoot himself.
