“Real” South African R1s

Anyone familiar with the supposed batch of 10 “real” South African R1s that were brought in in the 1980s by an airline pilot? Sold out of a gun shop in NY or NJ and it has been said that they were simply built up and spun with a story? Type 3 rec, no markings, etc.

A member here owns one and listed it on GB a year or two ago. Nutria brown with black furniture, really slick looking. Anyone ever encounter any of the others? Unsure if he ever sold it?

Since then, I've found a few pictures of another nutria-painted R1, this one in private hands in South Africa. It looked like a stock standard R1 got a dip job in a vat of nutria paint, furniture and all.

The owner claimed he had bought it from a retired SADF officer, and said that it wasn't hard to get an FN/R1 from the SADF in the Border War years if you lived in a rural area, especially if you were close to the war zone.

...... that got further unpacked when it came up for sale on Gunbroker again and was linked here. The pictures and unpacking it all pretty much show that it was all a great steaming pile of bulls#it to be polite.

It looked just like that one but was built on a Type 3 receiver.

Not yet. I will build my new R1 build, into a clone like this. Got all the rhodie parts. Doesn't the top cover have an ejection port cover, something like on AR's?

The one in the original thread had an Israeli port cover, which looked slick. I’d fork over some coin for a build like that.

At least one member does...I remember a pic or two of it posted in the past. One of my long-term hoped-for projects...assuming I can find either a decent DSA R1 or a good type 1 upper down the road....

I wonder if the Izzy cover was original equipment, or someone just put that on, because it was all they had?

Thanks for posting the link Andy. I still stand by my original post about the example that Vahan Kelerchian at Armament Services International had offered for sale. No amount of lipstick on that pig changes anything as far as I am concerned.

....all part of the obfuscation of the truth. When that rifle was FAKED up not many people would have been aware of what an Israeli body cover was and it just (IMHO) added to the BS mystique of that thing.

I was less hard in that original thread in some deference to the owner at the time as I am quite sure he was butt raped in the purchase (bought the story not the gun) and was listing it up with the backstory he had been given. There are just too many holes for that to be anything but a brown painted suppository (at the price and with the BS). Noting at all to say that it was NOT a good functional build, but I have a spare testicle that I would put on the line in a bet over it being a genuine "61 Base Workshop FTR New Build On a Commercial Type 3 Receiver That Was Smuggled Into the US With Ten Other Rifles".....FFS

It looks to have a 18" barrel. Any thoughts on this? I am going to try and make a drive by clone of this.

Well, that 21 inch SA barrel, just cost me some moola. I had just bought an 18 inch neutered barrel that I was gonna have re-threaded. Collecting FAL's / L1A1's parts is a cheap hobby, said no one ever!

Just keep in mind (again) that this paint job is a repro done by Lithgow SAF Museum. They are no experts on R1s, and I have a letter from SADF to Lithgow having to explain that the L1A1 and R1 are not at all the same.

On that note, a number of FALs/ SLRs at Lithgow are reproductions, so keep that in mind when using their collection for a reference. Since you'll ask, the F1 for example did not leave the factory as an F1 it was a clone made by an individual who later donated the rifle to Lithgow SAF Museum.

Also, a number of incorrect parts on Lithgow SAF Museum rifles have been mixed and matched, so one cannot 100% use them to determine if any particular part is correct. Not to say there are not correct rifles with correct parts- most are- but some are not.

Would this be what a real R1 would look like, for the Upper and Lower receiver?
Cause the one in that picture above looks like a Type 1 lower.

Would Gun-Kote Flat Service Brown (example below), be the correct color for the brown R1?

Yes. The rifle in the Lithgow museum appears to be an FN-contract rifle from South Africa (and a forced-match rebuild at that).

The right-side cuts on the upper receiver are even more important to an R1. The lightening cut on the mag well is unique to them.

Yes. Notice how the cut is more of a triangle than a quadrilateral shape, and made with a larger size end mill.
