Rhodesian R1 FN FAL restoration project

This project has been kind of a labor of love for me. Originally when I got this kit it was devoid of any kind of finish and while it had Rhodesian numbers none of it matched. I had spent some time researching the original paint and determined it was basically a house paint of some sort. Took original painted parts and had the colors matched. I tend to be anal about authenticity and seeing a lot of Rhodie FAL paints jobs the one thing people tend to miss is the wear pattern. If you leave it alone like a freshly painted gun it tends to look fake. The originally painted kits had various levels of wear and were repainted in a lot of cases multiple times hence the color patterns so over the course of a couple months I repainted and wore down the finish a few times until I got it to the level of wear I felt was correct looking. I went for a used but not beat to shit look. It originally had a Imbel barrel on it but I replaced it with a South African barrel. I wanted my mom to have something she could really love and while the gun shot well enough it still needed that look.....I think it has it now.

Still need to fix the timing issue on the flash hider but apart from that its done. Below is an example of another parts kit with original paint still left on it.

Do you remember the brand of house paint and or the exact colors you used, please? Looks to be a flat in texture? I agree. you did a good job!

Dunn Edwards mix is spot-on in color and texture, and seems to hold up well. I got a quart of each color.

Its all about prep. Gunplumber's way works well however the way I do it is a bit more work but it looks awesome in the end.

The key is imperfection with these paint jobs. What I do is when its dry to the touch is take a bit of paint thinner and rub on the top coat.

I've noticed a lot of the paint jobs they paint the stock one color and then put the other on top of it. Over time the top coat starts showing the bottom underneath. if you take just a bit of paint thinner and some light rubbing with steel wool it works well.

Great observation, that makes a lot of sense to me. One coat covering the whole thing, the next coat(s) covering only certain areas to create the pattern as opposed to two or three colors all applied at once without overlap. And then as you said, once the whole thing is starting to look worn out, applying additional coats right over it all without stripping the original adds even more character when it wears out.

Really outstanding job in application on your FAL. Looks old and beat up or just the way you like it.

Well I decided to try this today. I didn't want to go with the full worn down look but somewhere between that and newly painted.
