Excellent original wood!!! Why didn't I get into this hobby a lot sooner...

Well as much as I get off showing my Blue Monster wood, I have to say this is stock G1 wood! Damn well finsihed kit I picked up from 4Markk here on the FALS. Wanted to finsih it in black but it looked too good to mess with so it was screwed together by SLR5000 and ready for the range! Just need some time now!

Morning wood...

I finally finished and mounted my Ironwood seconds buttstock plus a carry handle I bought here years ago. It only took eight or so years...

Also changed out the Tapco POS handguard for new DSA US-made and the Phantom for an A1 FH.

FaNaticAL!

I just placed an order for a Type A buttstock and a pistol grip with Blue Monster to go on my BGS kit.

BTW, what kind of handguard is this on the HB? It must be early Belgium that they sent over on the first Israeli heavy barrel rifles. I don't believe I have seen one quite like this before.

Nice to talk with you at the Tanner show. Hope to see you again.

Best Regards,
Slo cat

Hi Slo cat,

Blue Monster is top notch! You will be very happy with that BGS type A and PG.

Yes, the handguard is identical to an early Belgium such as what was used on a T48-E1. I believe the major difference between the Izzy Model A's handguard and the early Belgian is the Izzy is minus the front sling swivel attachment point found on the underside.

It was great meeting you too!

I have finished cleaning up the wood on both of my BGS kits and the earlier production model is parked black and the later model is parked dark gray.
Does anyone have an opinion of what types of wood was used on these two?

I'm still working on some wood for my STG-58

STG_Wood2_r

The handguard and pistol grip are Ironwood seconds. The stock is from Jugrunner, but I'm working on an Ironwood stock for it which will better match the color.

I got lucky with the grain in the pistol grip, but I had to inlay a piece at the top to cover a chip.

STG_Center_r

The finish is multiple coats of Minwax Antique Oil

just got these back from the guy that does my wood....the 2 pg's are for G1 builds, the stock will probably be used on a Rhodie or something else, and the handguards I may use to clone a BGS type A....enjoy...

Nebula, that is some great wood!

Here is what I am currently messing around with.. 5 of my BGS kits and a NOS Canadian..

The 3 BGS stocks so far I have only cleaned up with a mild soap and then lightly wet sanded with 600 grit paper and 0000 synthetic steel wool and tung oil.. still have a couple of coats to go..

What do people do to get some more of the black oil and grease/dirt out of the ferrule and buttplate areas?

Some nice tiger stripe.. It's a little overcast today but it really shows off in the sun..

"What do people do to get some more of the black oil and grease/dirt out of the ferrule and buttplate areas?"

Oxalic Acid and 00 steel wool.
Be careful as to wear plastic gloves and forearm protection as Oxalic Acid can burn if it sits on the skin. I also wear a mask and wash the stock in a well ventilated area.
This is likely the best agent to remove those deep seated oiled areas.

This stock is similar to the upper stock in your second picture. Give a good a scrub and the dark oil will come out.

"DakTo that wood came out nice, did you use your regular Oxi-Clean -Krud remover method or did you try the oxalic acid."

On the darker wood stock and pistol grip I used only Krud-Kutter and then Oxi-Clean, and on the lighter stock I used the oxalic acid.
Working with oxalic acid is a lot less work removing the badly built up oiled areas and it also seemed to help close up the lighter scratches and dings.

I gave each stock & pistol grip a light coat of tung oil and polished with Stock, Sheen & Conditioner.
Thanks for the tip on the oxalic acid.

BGS Wood

Here is the "A" buttstock with the grip I received with my kit. It is a very interesting looking piece of wood.
It does have a crack in it but Adam762 generously offered to repair it for me.
When it's complete, with his permission, I'll post pics of the end results.
Thanks again Adam!

You know if someone was willing to make a set like the originals with the front metal and correct screw they would clean up with a limited run of 50-75.

Those guys down in Dixie who make those great looking Aussie handguards should take note and tool over to the metric three vent type. (Good business is where you find it)
Hell, the metal off of L/FNs cheap $35 handguards could be refitted if necessary.

A little late to this one...

Original C1 (not C1A1) stock on top. NOS, unissued. Long length. With C1A1 below.
