FN FAL ID

Hey guys,

This wandered into the shop the other day. It is an FN FAL (50.61). It does have an ARMS top cover, otherwise all correct. Serial number is 2507101. I need help with two things. Year manufactured, and approximately how many 50.61’s were imported?

Thanks guys,

Flash hider

I'm not an expert but do not think those came with the long flash hider. Also see the link below. Here is what I believe is a 50.61 but being marketed as a 50.64. I have read the debates on the 50.61 vs 50.64 and am curious as to what the experts say. I thought the 50.64s had a lightweight lower.

Show pics of the buttstock assy? The rear sight is a replacement, perhaps the whole para assembly??? Did you check for the para relief cut in the upper receiver? Bolt and carrier serialed to the receiver? Too many questions regards config and too few pictures to identify all that's not right with the item.

Earlier guns had long flashiders and that would be correct for a Steyr gun. They didn’t import as many 50.61s as GSI which is why we’re more used to seeing short flashiders (that isn’t to say that some early GSI-Birmingham guns didn’t have long FHs).

So you guys think this one is an earlier version of 50.61 given the longer flash hider? If this is so, about when might have it come in? Any idea of how many in this configuration came in?
I’m the Gun Broker guy for my local shop, the research I’m doing, is so I can accurately and honestly pass it on to potential buyers when I post it. It will be soon.

Not an early import, due to the presence of the Gun South marking, probably early eighties.

Like Dean said, definitely replacement rear sight and top cover (which will be very hard to source original parts).

While the Para lower does appear to be original belgian, I'm curious (like Dean) to know if the breech face shows sign of conversion to Para (or even if the original cover, with nose, would even fit).

This would be an indication the rifle started life as a 50.00.

Gun is marked Steyr in original post, not GSI (pic #3).

Ah, right you are. I still think it’s a possibility that the FH may be correct as Birmingham was early.

Rear sight

Looks like a VOW or Mountain man copy of the Holland rear sight. If it is a real 50-61, Then it should have a Half moon rear sight that flip's over from 150 to 250 rear sight.

Genetically Swiss, What we really need to see is when you pull up on that lower release lever, Then pull the arms mount off and slide the bolt/carrier out if there is a machine cut around the gas piston to prove that it is a real 50-61 Para Fal or NOT.

Appears to be a 50.61 (no 50.00 with that high of a serial number)--- "50.63" rear sight--- seen long flashhiders on numbers as high as 76XX)--- @ 1,800 imported (based on the serial numbers that I currently have) by various importers!!!
