Rockcastle A Run Through History 6k - 11-11-17

Anyone here going to this besides Kotengu (Matt I'm assuming I get to see you anyway!!) and JcornSS? I know Invictus said he would if he could lay off the beer err maybe it was his wife that said he was on the beer diet

https://www.facebook.com/events/347064765712600/

There's 22 slots open still. I'm hoping to bring two guys with me from NC but we will see if they come through (Jcorn, Shane is one of the ones I'm trying to get to go!!)

Where y'all staying? There was only one room left open at RC last time I checked so we'll probably hit up a local hotel.

I'm excited. Need to test fit a new rig, thought about trying the armageddon belt. May just be lazy and use my backpack though. Most likely taking my 18" AR & springfield XDM. I'm in decent shape at the moment but will step up on running mileage and be a little more clean about diet (f*cking halloween candy at the office and delicious fall beers).

Undecided on where to stay. I'll prolly call this afternoon after work. I'll be glad to let you know what I find.

I've been running up until about a week ago when I got this terrible head cold crap I have going on. Think it may be turning into an ear infection....... Ain't no time for that lol.

I'm probably gonna run the same guns I used this past weekend. No1mk3 LE (or maybe my No4mkII) and a BHP. I'm slow as crap anyway. No way I'm gonna beat the skinnies.

Stimp and I will be there as ROs, which hopefully means I'll have a little more free time to play and socialize!

My FAL still isn't quite where I want it, so I'm going AR-10 and Glock 41. Starting back on running today after work.

B17 - as cool as it would be to see in person, I'm going to have to reccomend you leave the heels at home for this one.

And fair warning to all - Tiger does math like the Okies do math. Be warned!

LOL-Gimme a break brother. I'm traveling today and typing on my phone.

In answer though, NO. I need to knock off 15 or 20 pounds of beer belly, but through exercise. I have no plans to give up on that life sustaining necter yet

How can I stay up on the March shoot? I'm in Iraq right now but should have leave around that time...

Relatively short drive from Livingston.

The best way is to click "interested" or "going" on the Facebook Event Page. That way you'll be notified (I think?) every time anyone posts there and you'll see every question and all the discussion about it. Here's the Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1694...tive_tab=about

If you're not a Facebooker I'm trying to repost what I think are the important details on several other forums for people who hate the FB. I've got a thread going here that you can follow, but notifications don't always work right: http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showt...=1#post4483162

MOST importantly though, come home safe and tell all the guys over there THANK YOU for your service! We'll see you soon -

I love it - taking leave from Iraq to shoot a Run N Gun in Kentucky. What was YOUR excuse again???

Not sure yet. I turned a match-grade Shilen blank down and got it mounted. It acts like it WANTS to shoot good groups, but just isn't where I want it yet. And I've been so busy shooting my awesome AR-10 that I haven't put much time into it yet.

Darn it. Wish I'd known about this earlier so I could have started training. I'm in terrible shape right now so guess I'm gonna have to pass up on this one.

23 and Me has revealed that B17 has a bit of Oriental heritage causing her to get her r's and l's mixed up.

I dunno, might jump in just as a motivator to get off the couch and burn some calories and some powder. Gotta do something if I'm going to shake that new moniker.

LOL.

Seriously though. You were in good enough shape to hack a 10k in the hot ass heat a few months ago. There's no way you couldn't be ready for a sixxer in 4 weeks. You live 2.5 hrs away from it for chrissakes.

So, we'll see you there?!

Oh shit y'all. I just got my L1A1 back from ARS. Maybe I should bring that thing to this?!! I think I read all shots are inside 100 yds anyway so....I was originally planning on just my normal 18" with a 1-4x scope. I don't know if I'll have enough time to put good "mileage" on this for a thorough function check before this 6k tho. Ughhhh decisions decisions...

That thing is far too pretty to ride on your back for 5 miles and get dragged through the mud. Or maybe it just is screaming for some new character marks.

The latter. I don't have anything too pretty to shoot or that I wouldn't drag across the countryside for a little fun

You could always carry both rifles with enough ammo for each on your back. What could go wrong???

4 miles on the treadmill tonight, alternating 0.5 miles at 0% and 0.5 miles at 15% incline at an avg 11 min/mi pace. I'm not quite at "Kelly Level", but I'm trying.

5.5 miles at an 11.1 min/mi pace this morning with 20lbs on.

Alright Kelly - post up how you ran twice as far at double the pace now!

Hey that's a fantastic pace with the distance and the pack. Weight changes everything!! I'm at the beach this weekend. I ran a little fiver this morning but thanks to the alcohol last night it was more of a jog than a run

I built Jill a pretty FAL with the best laminates I had out of a pallet or so and...it never leaves the safe.

The only FAL matches Jill ever shot...she shot the 8mm.

I still haven't re-sealed the handguards on my go-to FAL after Matt's match early this year...and honestly what's the point now?

Yep. I built an absolutely beautiful L1A1 many years ago. It was so pretty I was even afraid to move it around in the safe for worry about scratching the wood. I kept that up for awhile then finally sold it. Dragging it through the gravel would have been a better option, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it after all the work I put in to making it pretty.

Sorry about the handguard. You're welcome.

Did you guys get in at the Lodge? I can't believe they would be sold out for that weekend unless there's some other big event there too.

They probably got confused about which match weekend you were asking about - that has happened before. If they've answered the phone a hundred times telling people they are sold out for Blue Ridge, then when somebody calls for the 6k right in the middle of fighting 500 people in the lobby and parking lot you might have to say "no - NOVEMBER!".

Nah. I didn't call, I was looking at their booking online. I needed two rooms and they only had one so it wasn't going to work anyway.

No big deal, we are at the baymont which supposedly is only 10 mins away!

I'm kind of having this wild hair about doing the course twice, the first time with my AR, the second time with something cool like my garand or an FAL. Is that stupid? Am I going to be regretting it? I don't know what the terrain is like out there. Obviously my second run wouldn't set the world on fire but I thought hey, while I'm out there...

Terrain is pretty rough - lots of steep hills and best I can tell from what he's posted lots of cross country/offroad stuff. From my estimates the course is about 5 miles total.

So yes, it would be pretty tough to run it twice, and there would likely be a moment or two when you regretted it.

But it would be GREAT 20k training. Or a reality check. Or both. I think there will be time for you to do it twice on Saturday, but definitely reach out to Tiger and ask him first. He's the man on this one, and I am just a lackey.

I'm looking forward to it. If my son doesn't have soccer that weekend, it looks like I'm going to be running it twice. (2nd time at a considerably slower pace thankfully)

He had such a good time at the Legion match, he's excited for another one. I tried to talk him into shooting the entire match, but we haven't had time to work on his handgun skills lately, so at this point I think he's going to use it as practice for carrying his carbine.

I absolutely love that pic Bryan. I am hoping my son will be into guns too when he gets old enough (he's 3 in December). He shows a lot of interest, he always wants to watch my match videos and always calls out HIT! when he hears the steel ring. LOL.

OMG B17

I know what I have and my parents had no interest in shooting to get me started. Your son might grow up to make this dude look like a bloody piker !

PS - Well done Bryan

That is so awesome!

We're on track to have two junior shooters next March. One is a 12 year old girl from Oregon. The other is an 11? year old boy from Ohio. Their dads are going to run/work the 10k as ROs on Friday, then run the 5k course on Saturday with their kids. Then go work their stages for the public 10k on Sunday.

Hopefully this will motivate Bryan's son to start working on pistol and he can make it three! Or if he wants to just run with his Carbine again, that's OK too.

We need to promote and show off all these great kids. I'm tired of seeing all the crap we have on TV about "kids these days". We have a TON of great kids doing good things, but they don't get the attention they deserve. I'll take any one of these kids over Honey BooBoo any day.

Doing it. LOL. I signed up a second time and talked to Tiger about it, he didn't think it would be an issue. Now the question is what should I bring for rifle #2?! I'm leaning towards G1 or L1A1 since I'm def doing the garand in OK for Jan. Prob not going to bring the SAR48

Outstanding! If you're carrying the Garand in January it only makes sense to bring it to Kentucky for a "warm up." The few FALers who MIGHT give you crap for not bringing the L1A1 will stammer at your awesomeness when they see the Garand. Just hold out that beautiful chunk of wood and steel and say "what is it YOU are shooting again???"

As for me and my little Mattel toy: Back on the 5.5 mile hilly course tonight - this time with no weight and focusing on Lesson 3 from the Chi Running book. Averaged an 8.8 min/mi pace with a 160 bpm heartrate, and felt pretty good.

I am sorry I will not be able to make it to this one. The weekend is already booked. Friday Nov 10th is the Marine Corps Birthday and I will be visiting the grave of Chesty Puller that morning with some fellow Marines and then that evening is the Cake Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the birth of our illustrious Corps. I will drink a Toast to all you Runnin’ N Gunnin’ that weekend!

I got a little practice in last weekend with one of my M1 rifles. "A Run Through History" seems appropriate with such a worthy artifact.

Are you and Brian BOTH running the M1? I know a young lady who will be thrilled to hear that! And she might just make you look bad when she carries hers for the SECOND 10 miles.

Hell - she's a pretty lady, so she makes us all look bad in comparison. Then she picks up her Garand and makes us look weak too.

Who said anything about 10 miles?!?!?!?! I'm only going 6K and then I'm giving up, whether I'm finished or not.

Yup! Dave asked Vaught to carry his torch. (M1C) I couldn't let Vaught get all the glory, so I'm using a M1 too. 64 rounds of M2 Ball, 64 rounds of .45 ball, M1 Rifle, M1911 pistol. Hell, it will all still be much lighter than the load I carried for the Legion 5K.

lolol oh stop. I may even end up walking the whole second one! I think it's such a cool thing, traipsing through the woods, fully loaded out, coming upon stages and shooting. The first run I'll be too serious/nervous to fully enjoy it, but my second one I'm going to try to stop and smell the gunpowder.

I think I'm actually bringing my G1 for the second loop for Rockcaslte. My concern with the garand is having to clear it each time after a stage...I feel like I'd have to go overkill on bringing ammo, because I can't load a partial clip into the rifle (nor do I want to be refilling clips on the go). Where as with typical box magazine FAL you just remove mag and reinsert with any amount of rounds in it...

Maybe I'll change my mind though. I am woman after all. I'm doing one final weighted run/shoot on Saturday for practice and will decide after that. I really wanted to run the L1A1 but I haven't even had time to shoot it yet so it's a bit of an unknown to me. Plus I'm not certain the BHO works (or if it's supposed to on that receiver)?? Nor do I have any inch mags (I know metric ones will work but they don't fit as nice).

I have been using my rifle backpack for practice (same set up I ran in OK). I think I mentioned this on the last R&G go round, but my pack started ripping at the top over the summer. I sewed it back up, but it's happening again, and worse. I'm really losing faith and second guessing it. I ordered a belt set up from midway I'm going to try this weekend. It'd be a lot lighter but would make me run with the rifle slung, which I haven't done before. I hate last minute equipment changes like that...I don't know what I'll end up using on game day yet. I might take it to the local leather guy/shoe store and see if they can sew it with their commercial machines.

I'm in maintenance mode right now as far as running/workouts, can't believe that we are a WEEK away. After Saturday's practice I will taper/do light work outs and runs next week just emphasizing not getting hurt (lol don't you love getting older and your body betrays you). Been trying to eat really clean and lay off the alcohol until post race.
