How to stake a LS

Instead of getting an oversized LS, I want to stake it.

It's a Rhodie so it works. Just looking for someone to walk me through the process with staking the locking shoulder.

I've done everything with this rifle myself and I would like to do this myself too.

What kind of tools do I need for this?

Insert locking shoulder.......take hammer and punch and beat metal from reciever towards locking shoulder.

Get an oversize.

I did something one time to make a locking shoulder tighter. I can't remember. I didn't stake, I didn't glue it. Let me think.

Okay, there's that edge in the receiver, that lip of the locking shoulder slot. The bolt rides over it. Anyway, I think I rolled that down a little bit to make a tighter fit. I think I just tapped it with something. You flatten the edge of that ledge a little bit. I think that's what I did.

Got a good micrometer or a really good caliper? Let us know what shank size and LS size you need. Somebody may be able to help out. I have a couple here with oversize shanks, but I'll need to check on the numbers.

Staking seems like a poor idea. The LS is an "impact" part, and loose impact parts tend to get looser with use. Don't make us read your "I had a kaboom" thread upstairs.

Id again go with an oversize......its the safest, correct thing to do.....and you wont regret it.

I agree.

But depending on how little play there is, sleeve retainer might do the trick. If the LS can't bounce in the hole under pressure, and can't move either laterally or rotationally, the effect is pretty much the same as a proper press fit.

Just a thought as a possible alternative.

The factory technique for South African rifles was to cut a triangle notch out of the front and rear edge of the dogleg. Then swage the receiver into the notch.

Canadian technique was to cut the top front radius of the shoulder at 30 degree angle by 3/32 depth, and then to swage the receiver into this cut with a 1/8" chisel striking 3/32" from the locking shoulder.

I have seen a stub done like you mention the SA, did not click in my mind a locking shoulder retention method.

I'm with Shlo on this one, even with that dog ear to hold it in, still gonna rattle around some.

Hey does that affect the face angle? What is that angle again?

All the dogleg does it keep it from rotating shouldn't affect the angle.

The angle is 12 degrees according to the 1978 print. I know there has been some debate over it, but I don't understand why.

Impact impulse is from the front, driving to the rear of the cross drilled hole. Stake it at the front, preload to the rear. Do both sides. It won't move or loosen.

Best method, IMHO, is to go with oversize locking shoulder shank first. That's why they make them. Ream if you have to, but check headspace before removal. It may save a notehr removal to get the perfect headspace. Good luck.

If ya get an oversize from that guy in Arizona, best tell him not to paint it purple. Never know what's in the mind of a guy like that. Too much time around nothin' but tumbleweeds and gila monsters'll work on yer gourd.

Been roaming the desert for 20 years now - seen every critter you can imagine - sun spiders, wind scorpions, ringtails, chupacabras, coyote and desert fox. But no gila monsters. Only seen one in the zoo.

I built a pump station out that way that feeds the Gold Canyon golf course. Hangs over the CAWP canal, must have cost a fortune in greased palms to permit that. They asked us to make it 'bullet-proof' and I just laughed. The desert around there is littered with shell casings...probably all from Mark.

I have a friend that moved to Scottsdale many yrs ago. I remeber catching "gold fever" up in the superstitions durring my first visit. beautiful land.
On the way back we stopped at the only bar /steakhouse along the road leading back to his place. It was in the middle of nowhere and they were filming "rasing Arizona "there at the time .I got to watch the filming of the scene where the baby gets snatched up by the biker in the car carrier ,while sipping a cold one on the front porch of the place.

Oh and Stimpy, a few of those casings might of been from us--
