What glass do I put on it?

So I just traded an old Savage model 99e for a Weatherby 270 win vanguard deluxe sporter 24 in barrel.

The guy I traded with sold me the 99e for $350 about 5 years ago because he had another one in 300. He saw me last night at the HS basketball game and asked if I would trade the 99e for the new in box Weatherby. I said sure, sight unseen, and I would bring it by his welding shop today.

I agreed because I knew it had a personal family significance for him as it had been in his family since it was manufactured.

As he said, the gun was unfired and new in the box. He admitted that he had bought it at wally world for half price with the intention of trading me if I'd go for it.

I've been wanting another 270 since I last sold my other friend back his Remington 700. I love the way that round shoots.

All said, he's happy and I'm happy!

Now, what do I do with it?
And, what glass do I put on it?

That's a pretty vague question. How far do you want to shoot? How's your eyesight? What's your budget?

I want to lie and say I can see 300 but I'd like a printable 100 yards.

Leupold VX Freedom 4-12x40 or 2-7x33 will do everything you want that rifle to without breaking the bank. I just ordered 2 of the 2-7x33 for my daughter's birthday rifles; one is the dedicated .22 version that is going on her dedicated .22 AR upper and the other is going on her 6.8 upper. A 4-12 is going on her 5.56 upper I think or I may red dot it.

FYI, if you reload, RMR bullets have 90gr Gold Dot bonded soft points in stock at a great price. I ordered 1,000 for use in the 6.8 uppers and the .270 I'm giving to my wife for Mother's Day. If your rifle will shoot them, a 90gr Gold Dot is gonna put a hurting on anything worthy of shooting with a .270 with much reduced recoil on the back end.

It's a hunting rifle so I like a scope that gathers light in the early morning or late evening. 50mm may be too tall but they sure gather light well if you can fit them with good rings. You may not use the gun much so I can't see putting big bucks in a scope so this is what I would pick.

Bigger isnít always better for hunting scopes.

If you put a centerfire scope on a rimfire, be sure to google how to adjust the objective-focus to short range. Otherwise, parallax-error at close range can be enough to matter. Especially if the scope has a large objective.

I've been really happy with my Vortex Viper PST Gen. 2's: one a 5-25x50, the other a 3-15x44, both FFP and MRAD.

Seriously, I would find a Leupy say 3-9 at a gunshow for a couple of hundred.

A good 3-9 or 4-12 variable scope from either Vortex or Leupold should do you just fine. Then just pick your price point. Iíve found several good deals on used Leupold scopes that work great and have good glass that people are getting rid of for new fancy glass.

Best thing to do is go to Bass Pro and check each one within your price range. Find a spot in the store as far away as you can and look through each of them, at that spot. Check for brightness, clarity, adjustability and whatever other features you need.

That is what I did and found that for me personally, the Leopold were the best bang for the buck in my price range.

Another thing you might try is to test out scopes as mentioned above and then check out the for sale section on Snipers Hide. Those guys are constantly buying and selling nice scopes there.

For the money I absolutely love my Primary Arms glass, and I have several. Best for the $$, I think so. For out to 500 yds I think a 4-14x would be about perfect. It's what I have on my M1a Loaded model and it holds zero without issue, same goes for the 1-8x I have on the FAL. Google them for reviews, you'll be hard pressed to find much negative about them.

3 x 9 Redfield, Leupold, Burris or Nikon. It's a hunting rifle, not a high-speed, low-grade, sub-MOA surgical sniper rifle. Enjoy it for its practicality.

For a hunting rifle, there are few scopes that can beat the Weaver V10, either 2-10X38, or the better 2-10X50.
