Do not call list

I thought I was already on it, but the BS calls have steadily ramped up the last few months. Just this week I have probably had about 20 calls from random numbers that are not in my contacts. If just a number shows up and is not in my contacts, then it goes straight to VM.

I just called in to the FTC and registered (perhaps for the second time???)

The recording said all telemarketing calls should stop in the next 31 days.

Time will tell......

I screen the numbers that call and now the telemarketers are useing local numbers. So if it's a telemarketer I talk to them in less than a polite manner. Latest was Microsoft wanting to give me money if I would just give my bank info.

If I donít recognize the number I let it ring...no voicemail? Then I block the number on my phone....if they leave a voicemail and itís something or someone I donít know? It gets blocked too....spam calls have gone way down....

I've seen the same thing. Sometimes if I don't recognize the number I just let it goto messages for further assessment. Sometimes I answer, if it's a TM, I politely but firmly inform them that they are in violation of the No Call and that I don't want their solicitations. Seems to work a lot of the time. If I get a known recall I let them have both barrels.

Same here!
Been trying, so far, four calls to Century Link, to get the damned blocking feature fixed on the phone, another round tomorrow with them tomorrow.
Some outfit, wanting to loan me money, to pay off my non existent student loans, went from an 800 number to a local number.

The only reason we have a landline is for all of the above. If any business insists on a telephone number to complete a sale (total bullshit), we gve them the landline, then never answer it if caller is unknown.

A friend who had to check on some insurance when going on medicare, used his cellphone #. He soon started getting barraged with phone calls from them, and won't stop. I showed him how to block the number. It didn't help, they must have hundreds of extensions or they are using the ghost game. It's a total clusterf&&k.

What I can't figure out is the credit card company that is calling me to tell me that I haven't returned their attempt to contact me and this is the final call I will receive.

I guess that means to because they keep calling back a couple of days later with the same message.

It's slowed down some after registering but unfortunately a phone is almost like spam in an email acct these days. You do remember the days when everyone's phone number was registered in a directory? You paid extra for unlisted

For Android, I use Blacklist Calls SMS. Black list, white list, contacts only, and you can set it up for SMS (texts) as well, but it has to become your text messaging service. It's amazing how few times my phone rings now with that app set to contacts only. I filled up one phones block list (200 numbers). Too many that are spoofed these days using your first 6 to try to trick you into thinking it is another cell phone owner on your network.

Serious question:
How many calls worthy of answering do you get in a day from any number not already in your contact-list?

Zero?

For most people, that is about it.

That being the case, why would you EVER answer a number you donít recognize?

Just press the red button, and let the spam calls roll to VM.

I never answer my phone for unknown numbers and let them leave voicemail. Sometimes it's someone legit calling about an order I placed, etc. I get far too many spoof calls coming from alleged neighbors in my rural suburb that I know are actually from someone in the Caribbean or India trying to run a scam.

Another question

How does the government having your number on a list prevent anyone, from anywhere, from calling you?

Most the telemarketer calls I get are blocked (have an app) and the rare one that gets through is most the time a robocall. Sometimes I have fun with the live ones. I listen and then say "you sound like you got a perty mouth. Will you suck my cock"". They tend to hang up after that.

VA has opened a new Clinic in my area, so I get a few per month from it. Plus, VS has numerous numbers anyway, and I'm fighting for a Rating Increase, so I never knowif an Unknown Number is a scam or legit.

We have told our friends we screen all our calls. If we don't hear you talking, we will not pick it up. We still get a dozen junk calls a day that don't go to voicemail.

I use 505-867-5309 when a phone number is required and I don't want them to call me.

Also, if I don't know the number I swipe it to VM. Text works best for me.

Back around 1980 or so when that song came out, that was a real local number near us. We called it and asked for Jenny (as I am sure did every other kid within 20 miles). The guy was pissed and exasperated telling us to "stop calling, there is no Jenny here". Within a couple of days the number had been disconnected.

I suspect now today that him and/or his kids tell the story fondly as a old, funny memory, but I'm sure it was really aggravating at the time.

Uh, not necessarily. I'm in sales and get calls from numbers I don't immediately recognize. Also, I have to buy things too. When I call in I expect someone to answer.

If I am bored, doing something that I don't have to concentrate on, I play with them. Generally give whatever answers they need to get me to a live person and then I play that person.

My logic is that each of those calls cost the company money and time. Most of those calls are trying to take advantage of old people or people who are vulnerable, so they are fair game. If enough of us do this and the companies lose enough money they will stop. Remember, there are more of us then there are them.

Heard once that if you are traveling and out shopping at a store with the annoying shopping cards to use the local area code and Jenny's number as the alternate ID.

With VOIP and caller ID spoofing you never know where the call is coming from. Not to mention the piles of idiots that use their own cell phones to make calls for politicians. The car warranty calls are my favorite... I don't have that car anymore, what are you driving now? I am paralyzed from the accident that totaled that car... Silence

Me, too. I have over 250 numbers blocked on my cell phone and over 100 blocked on my work phone. I actually have had telemarketers use numbers that are in my contacts.

I do the same, except I will make time for them. I usually tell them to go eat a bag of fukn dix. They don't know how to respond to that. I haven't gotten any calls for a while now. Maybe they put me on their do not call list.

I see people push the Cross Walk button at intersections all the time....
they believe and feel they work. Uhmmm no not really. Neither do most of
the close door buttons on elevators.

So what you did was register your cell phone for the upcoming cell phone directory...
