L1A1 surplus ammo preference/accuracy

Finally built one of my original barrel Australian kits. Sighted in with German DM111 MEN 94 ammunition, which produced mediocre (~8–10") 10 shot groups at 200 m from my junk bench rest. I can get 4-5" 10 shot 200 m groups with both my kit-built Imbel and FMAP FALs using this exact ammunition.

Everything changed when I switched to Australian MF 82 F4 ball, and the rifle performed similarly to the Imbel and FMAP. Unfortunately, my F4 stockpile fits in one ammo can. Anyone else identify other surplus or commercial that shoots well out of Australian L1A1s?

Hirtenberger seems to shoot well out of mine. Solid 3" groups and gtg for gong ringing at 400 yards.

I stick with PMC 147Gr FMJ. All my rifles seem to like it. Never did any MOA stuff , but 10" gongs at 100 and 200yds are dead meat.

South African always shot well out of all of my FALs/L1A1s.. Hirtenberg does well also.. While not surplus, Privy Pratisan PPU white box shoots the best out of anything I would classify as surplus or cheap. The white box PPU is the same as the commercial blue box stuff but just slightly cheaper without the flashy packaging.

Are the groups you refer to obtained with a scope or open sights? I find compered to my AR's the rear sight aperture is really large, and for me, makes getting a consistent sight picture harder - this might be a factor too.

Open sights. Note that I'm experiencing the stated group size differential with the same rifle, sights, shooting position, same day, same everythingójust different ammo.

Hirtenberger seems the best out of my rifles.

The boxer primed setups and berdan.

Mine shoots Brit RG the best. Best group for ten shots at 600 yards out of a Izzy HB was 8" X12" fired over a rolled up sleeping bag.

Straight Federal bulk through my C1A1. If I can see it at 300, I'll hit it. 19 times out of 20.
Rifle is bone stock as issued Canuck, no changes, nothing.

I've had fantastic accuracy with MEN and DAG out of my StG-barreled para.

My para lower is a DSA Hampton with A2 sights built in.

OK so related question... which milsurp stuff seems to show the best all-around accuracy across various rifles (auto and bolt) capable of firing the 7.62/.308? Which shows the worst?

For my personal purposes I'm thinking brass-cased, non-corrosive stuff. Ideally it would be boxer primed as I reload, but the toll on the gun means far more to me first so don't want steel or corrosive stuff.

I always hear about Hirt leading the pack, but I know there was some specific stuff used by snipers and the marksmanship units that can be found with effort (M118 I think), but certainly NOT at typical milsurp prices.

So thoughts? Real-world testing done anywhere? Looking to expand the knowledge base here.

+1 on Hirtenberger. My Brit rifle loves it.

I've got this wooden box of British Aerospace 7.62 ammo. Is it any good?

Yeah,

I bought a bunch of that stuff as well. It was from the middle east or destined for there IIRC.

I think the absolute best I've shot so far was some MF 68 Australian ammo that I found on GB years ago. Had some storage issues, and the brass was aging such that I began to have case failure issues, but it shot tight and flat as a pancake.

I still have 2 cans of that Aussie 7.62 that was available about 15 years ago. It's my private stash. Shoots even better than Lake City!

I bought a case of 70's era boxer primed Hirt that shoots moa in my AR10. One case of port shot 1.25" in the AR10. All other cases I have opened so far and tested have been mediocre by comparison. This stuff was also the most accurate in my FALS but I save it for the AR. I got 2-2.5" inch groups out of my iron sight FAL with it when my eyes were younger.

I never tried LC match in .308 as I was buying cheap and stacking deep in .30 caliber and expected to reload for accuracy.

I did get a couple cans of LC match in 30.06. It's accurate but I can reload better ammo with match king bullets.

70s vintage Radway Green was superbly accurate in my rifles whereas 90s vintage Radway Green couldn't hold less than 6" groups in the same rifles. I ended up blowing the 90s stuff off in my 1919 semi.

Have had good luck with 70s vintage India ball whereas 80s vintage was dangerous.
