So, a Cetme and a Mauser had intercourse...

...and the FR-8 was born (thanks Oleg!).

I've always wanted one for 308 cast bullet shooting and found one at the LGS, exactly one week ago.

It was on consignment and they agreed to submit my cash offer (slightly less than the asking price) and propose it to the owner of the rifle...good.
They said they would let me know one way or the other and that the seller was usually quick to respond to their phone messages...good.

A week later and I have called once and stopped by once to inquire and they claim the seller has not responded to their calls.
I know that people get sick, die, vacation, work and get busy, but I think I will withdraw my offer today.

The LGS does not seem too communicative...maybe because I am a *new customer* for them and they don't know me from Adam?
Maybe my money is not green enough?

Seems like they have dropped the ball on this deal.
I think the LGS should know the owners bottom dollar and be able to negotiate on their behalf, instead of putting a potential customer off for a week.
Am I unreasonable in my thinking?

Discuss...

That looks like a lot of fun in a short package...and I don't mean the rifle!

I threw caution to the wind with a last minute bid on GunBroker and got a real nice 1951 with bayonet/scabbard and free shipping for $475.
I had offered $450 for the consignment piece...still haven't heard from them.
All I need is a sling and to do some handloading and will be ready to hit the range!

As far as knowing the owners bid, some of them are unwilling to go lower; I've dealt with them numerous times before. Others like to negotiate, so they like to have a more hands on approach with haggling.

Fantastic...the rifle ain't bad either.

I was always kind of intrigued by the FR7s and 8s, wish I had got one back when they were cheaper.

I was told the owner of the consignment was open to offers, would respond quickly and would likely accept my offer, and they would let me know one way or the other.
Crickets for 9 days, running.
No worries, I got an invitation to visit a nice location in the UP of MI from the owner of the rifle I bought and we had an excellent phone conversation with much in common.
That's worth something to me and the rifle with bayonet will be shipped today.

Me too, but they aren't getting any cheaper. Just yesterday bidders pumped one up to ~$600 on GB...crazy!
I have a couple of interesting bullet moulds to try with the FR8.

I had an FR8 back in the early 90s.

Kicked like a mule so sold it off.

Think they were runnning about $125 back then. If I saw one for sale at $125 I would still pass.

That is the beauty of tailoring cast bullet handloads to a nifty little bolt action.

Can be as mild or as stout as desired.

A friend of mine loads for an FR-7, he uses pretty much 300 savage as a start point with 125 gr cast bullets.

I favor long and heavy in .30 caliber cast ranging from ~165 to 210 grains, all dressed for flight, sized, lubed and gas checked.
I look forward to loading for this one.

How would it compare with a Mosin carbine? First time I shot one I barely managed to go through all 5 rounds, but nowadays I think every brand of ammo I get must be underloaded because I can go through a box without a problem (would go through a 100 rounds if someone *else* was paying for it ). Should might look a bit reddish after I get home but not sore.

it appears that FR-7 and 8 were deliberately made to appear to a distanced or uneducated observer to be CETME. this illusion would be a sure-fire force multiplier on a confused battlefield or an urban population control situation.

The next time I hear "THE RANGE IS NOW HOT", it just wont be the same.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I put a 74 style muzzle brake on an M44 and it knocked the recoil down considerably. Being the FR-8 is also threaded,I see no reason why it too wouldn't mind a brake. Make shooting it a lot more pleasant.

Fired the FR8 for the first time this afternoon.
I'll have a brief range report and a pic or two later this week.

The FR8 is a honest contender, but the Brazilians did it better by using the G3 front and rear sight in their M968 Mosquefal
