SO I GOT THESE RHODIE PARTS...

ok so I bought this lower on the files here awhile back and when it arrived I was smitten. I wanted to build a Rhodie Fal like everyone else and this was my second attempt. I say second because I sold a complete kit I had about two years ago. I was given an offer I couldn't refuse (even though I should have with prices these days) anyway...I got this lower and was shocked as to what it was once I received it

upon inspecting it I noticed some weird markings Ive never seen before, I was expecting the normal maybe RA or ZA electro pencil but I saw all this (um) stamping.

after digging online and the files I realized what I had.

although I've never seen a stock with the (um) stamped in it by the screw. how common is this ? also can anyone tell me what the number "2" means on each side of the stock? I haven't seen this either.

upon further inspection I noticed it has a (um) still intact next to the take down lever that handed been sanitized either. I was getting exicted. and flipped it over half expecting a ZA or RA electro pencil. but no, it was clean and hadn't been marked.

as I was flicking the selector for test function I saw a "r" on the lever and then I also noticed an intact beak.....now where in the money !!! but what is that small half circle cut out in the lower receiver by the "S" ? is that damage ?

so far this is what I got for my "kit"

can anyone confirm if these are grey Belgian handgaurds ?

That semi-circle cut-out is not damage; it's there to allow easier 'levering' to remove the hammer spring assembly.
Very nice lower, sir

Just need a South African barrel and build it into a nice South African R1 clone. I’ve seen UM marking on lower, bolt, carrier and long plastic stock. I don’t recall seeing UM on the three long SA wood stock I’ve handled. Any markings on the bolt and carrier?

The lower is South African. UM is the military marking for south African rifles. Also those "R" marked selector levers are used on south African lowers.

Wow! What you have there is a start for a very nice South African R1 build, I wouldn't build that as a Rhodie rifle I'd build it as a strictly SA rifle, but it's yours, build it as you like. But that's a pretty rare unaltered SA receiver, I never seen the UM marking on a long wooden stock and I've had a few, but mine were covered in Rhodie paint and road hard and put up wet. Show us photos whenever you build it. however you build it.

For inspiration here is a picture of my South African R1 build. Wood stock does not have a UM mark. Lower , bolt, carrier, barrel, stock, handgauards are SA. Lower, bolt and cariier are also RA marked.

Multiple possibilities here without camo paint...early-issue Rhodesian rifle, Rhodie rifle in vehicle mount service (wood stocks preferred for that), Rhodie rifle that never got camoed (there were some), South African joint ops/1970s-80s Border War....

I love the M in U marked stock. What a great find. Now you need to get an M in U marked mag to go along with it.
