Early stg58 kit build:
Kit #176 Original park finish in very good condition Matching numbers Dsa type1 receiver, sn 302xxx Non-horseshoe hanguards (thx capt D) Ironwood type B stock and pg Long gas tube Aluminum charging handle Std FN gas plug Beveled trigger guard Early bipod (8) stamps ![]() This is probably the earliest stg58 kit in the usa. I have not seen an earlier number, neither had Boman (supplier). The original rifle was probably built in the first few days of production and very lightly used. Scope and mount are Leatherwood. Art1 with 7.62mm cam and FAL base. You will find the artel and art2 sold on ebay or gunbroker but the art1 is very rare bird since so few were made.

My fresh STG58 build
I've had this parts kit sitting under my work bench for about a decade. Same goes for the Imbel receiver. I them both as soon as we figured out one could here in CA, then never did anything with them. The other day a friend said he wanted to go wild boar hunting, I thought that was a GREAT idea but lamented that I didnt have an appropriate pig gun... then I remembered the .308 STG58. Took the parts to J&G Gunsmithing in Granite Bay, CA and they put it all together for me. Some fine tuning and it shoots like a cadillac.

My first FAL, an StG (non-matching) on an Imbel NGL receiver, IWD stock (stained beech), and all other parts are Steyr, with authentic StG sling:
Another StG, carbine style, with a blind pinned cut-down original Stolle (barrel woulda been too short without the pinned FH--the threads had a deep cut, and barrel needed to be cut to less than 16" to fix...). Built on an Imbel GL receiver with all Steyr(also non-matching) parts. I have the sling for this one too, just not installed in the photo: |

DSA/Steyr StG58 Carbine
![]() Built by DSA; bought "new" in 2002. Type III, no carry handle. Rifle is nearly mint with only 95 rounds shot shortly after I got it; zeroed it in and adjusted gas. Shot a 1.25" 5-round group at 100 yds. with iron sights and FNM military surplus ammo. I still have that target; I don't think my old eyes could do that now! |

Bringin' sexy back
So here she is, essentially the crown jewel of my small collection of riFALs. I got the kit from a member here, which from what I recall was painstakingly pieced together by Chris aka nwobhm aka Mr. StG himself. I'm quite proud of this rifle, even if I'm not the one who did all the work piecing it all together. Okay here goes...
- Barrel is a '59 proofed FN 'E-prefix' replacement forged unit, never fired nor installed (on an interesting note, it's s/n# is E271...remember on the Empire Strikes Back, when Han said "Chewie, set two-seven-one..." in the asteroid field?) - Stolle is an original blued FN proofed - Gas plug is a levered FN '59 proofed...looked like it was never used - Gas reg and front sight post appear NOS, still have color-fill - Front sling mount is blued, used, but has nice character...correct 'L' shape loop - Handguards are Belgian, I believe, and while not quite NOS, did clean up very well and line up beautifully. - Bipod has NOS plungers, matching # clamshell halves, and original rotation limiter. Legs are correct for early StG (or G1/BGS). Axle bolts show character and, as luck would have it, I was gifted an original two-slot castle nut (with a repro twin -- anyone have another original they'd sell me!?) - Charging handle is dual-proofed FN and Steyr(!) - Bolt AND carrier are NOS unserialized FN - HTS all '59 box proofs, same as barrel - Lower s/n# is 22104...my birthday is 22 Oct (10) and I'm the IV/4th...strange - Receiver is LMT - THE STOCK. Original. THICK-wristed. Walnut. Pad-cut...and oh so mine ![]() Yes, I've been sitting on this one for a while. Project took some time and Dr. Shock expertly cut the carry handle cut (was originally NCHC) and reparked the receiver to match the rest. He also installed the barrel and headspaced while he had it, and she just came home this week, so I had to take advantage of the overcast day to share her with the world. I'm still on the lookout for a gently used SHINY StG pistol grip (again, anyone have one!?) but I'm extremely happy with the result. We'll have to see how she does at the range... Anywho, enjoy the photos...and have a good weekend ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Post #30
Well, I finally made it to the range today to get this baby dialed in. Gas on '4' and the contouring of the ejector provided for ZERO brass kisses whatsoever...
ETA: Ammo used was Lake City surplus 10, 13, and 14 The two shots on the upper right circled in green were the very first two shots, at 25. Now, before you start judging me, allow me to point out that the wind was a factor! I don't mean in a traditional sense, I mean that it dried my eyes out to the point where it made it difficult to see the target board at times, which is what I would like to believe caused the flyers... ![]() You will see the groups marked as Group 1 and Group 2, even though Group 2 on the left is actually a superimposition of two strings of fire four to five rounds each (the bottom right group is from my blackout Tavor, while the stringy group, between top- and bottom-right and is from aiming at the upper right corner with the blackout with suppressor...the can drops shots by 4-1/2" and strings them vertically a bit... need to dial the dope in... Anywho, this was her maiden voyage...perhaps one of these days I can really see what she can do on a windless day with better eyeball moisture... ![]()

Nice stick, Marine.
Type II receiver and SAW grip are two of my faves on these rifles. Thanks for posting up the pic.
