The beginning of my FAL/L1A1 journey...

After being too slow or not feeling it for a few riFALs on Falfiles ( apologies to the members I have bombarded with questions) , I bought what was described as "L1A1 Imbel sporter" from Cabela's ( of all places) .
My knowledge being very theoretical from reading on here and elsewhere ( I had seen precisely 2 FALs in my life - both at gun shows, one had spider webs in the barrel and the other was a STG 58 not for sale ) I jumped at the chance of an Imbel receiver build particularly as the process was that I paid to have it shipped to my local store and could then accept or reject it , only forfeiting the shipping cost.
It has had a hard life as you can see.
Once I had it transferred to me I got my LGS to carry out a safety check.
It came with 2 inch magazines, one of which is dented meaning the follower gets stuck.
First impressions at the range are that it is fun to shoot.
Immediate observations were that it doesn't cycle at all with some ammo
(Aguila) but will cycle at setting 1 or 2 with Federal or Winchester.
The other observation is that the trigger is breathtakingly heavy, so that along with updating the furniture is the first job on the list.

It seems to be Australian kit from what markings I can find.

Which brings me to my questions if you would be so kind fellow forum members....

- which would be the best synthetic stock/pistol grip to match the existing hand guards?
- I am in the market for a buttstock removal tool, is there a preferred one or one to avoid or are they all much the same?

- as far as the gas system goes, what can I do to improve this?

All comments and input welcome.

Pix....

I would buy the original Brit marynal pistol grip and buttstock. The FAL tool is universal. When Century were putting on the thumbhole stocks they tore off the pistol grip stud on the lower-that should be repaired, or the lower replaced to get the best fit for the pistol grip.

Welcome, do you mind me asking how much you have into this riFAL??
The 1st thing I would do would be to un-Ban that sucker!!! They look much better with out that stoopid thumbhole stock. It’s fairly easy to do, & gratifying once you’ve done it for yourself. From time to time you will see wood furniture sets for sale here from members like yellowhand & flypaper, either members wares will make that gun look better

with Coonan backing out of the receiver game, is there anyone left that
does inch pattern?
Or are we now at the mercy of the auctions? I'm sure others are seeing whole rifles disected for receiver and parts.

your Cabelas find is a good place to start....... complete, can play with it along the way.

Thumbhole conversion

I recently found a Century/Imbel L1A1 Sporter, exactly like the one shown above at a local Cabela's for $1199.00. I'll be picking it up in a few days. Gotta sell some stuff for the funds.

I already made contact with Arizona Response Systems and they are onboard to de-Cintonize it and give it a full overhaul to its former glory. I'll be shipping it out next week and looking very forward to some range time when she returns.

Yes, get rid of that Thumbhole - My L1A1 feels so much better without it.

Seems like there's a few of us new guys hanging around with L1A1's. I picked one up 2 weeks ago. I'm trying to decide if I want to return it to all Imbel or just de-ban it. First FAL so I just don't know.

Markings are British except for the lower receiver.

Does the cocking handle fold ?

If it has Brit or Aussie markings the receiver was probably cut for it.
Century imported Imbel receivers often had some Inch features like a shortened rail to accommodate the folding cocking handles.

Century usually cut the tabs off the Inch receiver covers to make them work in their Imbels.
I'm not sure if any of the Century Imbels were imported factory cut for the tabs.
Hard to tell with Century.

My experience with inch, is that the triggers all suck big time. I'd take inch above metric for almost anything BUT the trigger.
