New to AK's

Ok guys, here's my deal.

I'm a FAL guy, but the AK is cool.

Can you recommend what to get for a traditional ( as in original looking) AK.
I'm not into fancy tacticool crap, just an traditional stamped, workaday wood furnitured ugly, fixed stock, reliable AK.

I know NOTHING about these things other than that the bad guys carried them when I was in the Army...

My Chinese MAK 90 is my favorite. You can by one with the
thumbhole stock and convert it to standard furniture.
There are many other good choices, this just my favorite.

Ok, thanks.

In this crazy time, what would a guy expect to spend?

Curious..

I know an AK ain't a FAL or an AR, but seriously man, I ain't got a sniff of an idea.

And to convert? How, and cost to do?

Right now, buy a kit and build it. Much cheaper and you know what you are getting unless you go wiht one of the bigger brands. I like Polish, Chinese, Russian, Maadi, Bulgarian and early Romanian ones myself. Pretty much in that order, but not exactly, however. Definitely go with a Nodak Spud receiver, although they are not taking telephone orders right now, only mail in or fax orders. I have a few coming in when the next batch is due (around February).

Thanks,
I looked quickly on GB, saw lots of Romanians, a Yugo, among others.
Can you recommend any specific one?

I know I keep beating the MAK 90 drum, but you will not be disappointed.
Ironwood has replacement stocks in the $160 range.
I left the stock front sight base on mine as I did not care if
the gun had a bayonette lug or not. I have had many AKs and this
is one of the finest for the money.
If it were me I would put every MAK90 on gunbroker in my watch section.
If you can get one under $900 I would buy it. I would wait until
I could get one in that range or less.
The Romainian and Polish guns do not compare in my opinion.
The Russian and Bulgarian do.
Be careful of ANY AK with a barrel that is not original to the gun.
Or in other words US made barrel.
Run some of your choices by us, we would love to help you make an
informed choice.
Bret

Thanks Brett.

I'm a FAL guy, in no rush, but I just think they're evil looking and nasty.
And it's America, and I want one..LOL!

I'm pretty sure there won't be an AWB, at least if our politicians care about their jobs, that is... so I don't mind waiting

If looking for new anything from Arsenal is good.. might be hard to find right now.

I would post a wtb ad in the marketplace and see what gets offered up. With the current panic, anywhere else and you are going to be raped.

For a newer budget minded AK the Waffenworks rifles from Atlantic Firearms have been getting good reviews:

Thumbs up

There are still some decent deals to be had.

The two I would look for would be (AKM in 7.62x39) -

1) A fixed stock Romanian "G" marked model - These have been made with all
sorts of US receivers, which you will need to research a bit. The G kits seem
to have been in the nicest condition when imported, and they usually have
the mil-spec original barrel. The wood can be refinished into Russian red/iodine for the old school/cold war look or just get a new set to your specs from Iron Wood.

2) An underfolding stock Polish model - Lots of kits came in with the original barrels that were matching numbers. Same advice as to receivers. Great quality, you can still find a good one for less than $1,000.00 right now.

I recommend against building if you are unfamiliar with the design. There is a learning curve to it. I recommend learning about what to look out for on a wasr and getting one. Despite idiotic rantings to the contrary the wasr is a fine rifle.

A WASR 10 is a Century imported Romainian rifle. It is generally looked
at as the lower end of AKs. Often the front sight would be canted to
the left or the right. Generally not as nicely finished as other AKs.
All that being said, I have one, and it is a fine shooter. It is a little
rattley compared to others, but functions fine. I would not buy a
WASR unless I could inspect it or knew the person selling it.
If you find a straight one, they are great.

I have a Romanian sar-1, ak-47, & sar-2, ak-74. Both ain't much to look at but have been about 100% reliable and acceptably accurate & have chromed barrels & use standard commie mags. The sar-2 has the dreaded canted front sight and gas block which I might get fixed someday, but I doubt it. My 13&14 year olds just shot the sar2 today with zero issues, and shot it well, recoil is very minimal. My dream ak74 is still an arsenal. The scope rails on both are properly mounted. Running the sar-2 with e German bakelites is just cool.

0302, I hear ya!

I guess I'm just looking for a crappy Commie gun that looks like it was just plucked out of the bony hands of a long dead Commie soldier.

I'd like it to look like shit but run perfectly.

I'm looking at a MAK90 now, but it looks too new..LOL! But I'm sure it's 100% reliable as MAKs usually are.
I'd have to re-wood it for sure....

I like the Romy G's and Polish Underfolders.
Romy G's were $100 when the Polish kits were $250.
Polish barrels were made on Steyr hammer forging machines.
Romy barrels are chrome lined.
The Polish underfolders look the bad assest but the Romy's seem to
be just as accurate.

They're still pretty reasonable on Gunbroker. $750-$1000 for built rifles.

Arsenals go for more.

I like the Romy G's, but I hate that goofy front handguard..
I'd have to deep six that thing...

Building my own makes sense to me. At least I get what I want right out of the gate...
There's always something I don't like about someone else's rifle, ya know?

I will say that if you can find a Wasr at a decent price and can examine it for "problems" that can occur with any AK, they can be good guns.

I've had 4 (down to two) and all have worked fine and actually been my most accurate AK's.

Overall, I've looked at a LOT of AK's, owned quite a few, and they're all generally pretty good as long as you know what to look for: abnormal "binding" when checking the bolt carrier, canted trunnions, FSB's, gasblocks, etc.

You will enjoy whatever AK you get, they're all a blast.

WASR 10/63 made by the ever popular century arms I believe would fit the bill.
the stock sets look like ass but they work. the tapco trigger is squishy but I don't have issues with it personally. fitted mine with arsenal stuff to make it look like an AK-74 side folder. I'm happy with it. one note I may be mistaken but the WASR 10 was made to take single stack mags and no muzzle device. the 10/63 has a ground out magwell to take normal mags and a threaded barrel.
most are simply called a WASR 10.
got mine around the 300~400 range best of luck finding one at a decent price these days.

Here's a pic of the Romy G I built from a $100 Bocefus kit and NDS3 receiver. It has a Texas Weapons Systems top cover and US made furniture. Need to paint that front brake and put a sling on it. Almost too pretty to be an AK but I like it and it shoots great.

MSnyder,
That's a freakin good looking rifle!

I'm not looking for something that nice

I'd drag mine through the dirt behind my truck a few times to Commie it up a little, I think....

Or pour some acid on it or something... Dang that thing looks like it should be framed or something.
Stalin's probably flipping in his stinkin grave right now!

Doesn't someone make furniture to workwith that goofy slant cut?
Or does that just make the whole rifle look stupid..

You're cheapest bet would be a romy g on an nds3. I like mine. Getting anything right now is kind of rough unless you can find a good deal. My kit cost me like $125 and the receiver is only like $60ish I think. Luckily some fellow falers helped me put it together.

If you intend to build, look for an NDS1 or Armory USA AKM receiver. These do not suffer the dimensional issues the NDS3 is fought with. The NDS3 rivet holes were patterned after the SA85 and will not line up with the Romanian rivet holes precisely. It is better to drill your own rivet holes so they match your kit. The NDS3 also has issues with the FCG pin hole dimensions, which cause disconnector engagement issues that are falsely attribute to the tapco FCG. The issue is a receiver issue. Avoid the NDS3 if you can.

Nick, you make me sick!
Don't tell me what you paid, I get pissed off! LOL

I've heard I hould go with the Nodak1 not the 3 with this kit because of dimensional isues.

Question: should I buy the "deluxe"
with the tunnion holes drilled, or just the basic and drill my own?

As far as everything else goes, I want this to be a p.o.s. looking piece of kit when done..

While i've had no issues from mine, which has a g2 trigger in it. I would never try to steer someone towards an nds3 over an nds1. I'll probably build my last kit on an nds1 if I can ever get my hands on one. Looks like nodak no longer even sells nds-3 receivers. The guys that make me sick are the ones that bought nice fal kits for $100 and imbel receivers for like $150 I missed that boat. And the cheap surplus ammo boat.

Yeah bust most of the kits you'll find now are pretty well used vs a practically new romy.

Ditto on the Yugos. Some don't like em but theyve been a problem-free "platform" for me- however they arent parts compatable with other, lesser AKs, nor do they have chromed barrels. They are (subjective experience) accurate and sturdy.
The Chinese MAK90s are great too and have the chromed barrel. There are several places that sell wood for the angle cuts, both stamped and forged recievers. Ironwood Designs being one of them that Ive done business with.
I went with the forged thinking it would be more a "last forever" sort of thing tho I dunno how much difference it really makes and won't live long enuff to find out.
