Good C&R in 7.62 x 51

Looking to possibly pick up an older less expensive c&r rifle to shoot and somewhat have as a conversation piece that is chambered in 7.62, and thoughts or direction?

Thanks

The window of opportunity is not that wide, being that .308 was not really around until 1955 and C&R is 1962. However, as mentioned; FR-8, Izzy K98, Ishapore 2A, Winchester M70, MAS 49/56 conversion, Spanish M1916. I'm sure we can come up with others.

The last 2 Izzy K98's I had were in the $350 range.

Have FR-8, Ishapore 2A, Spanish M1916 (sold) and also a 1912 Mauser. I like 1912 most! Also have couple 308s built from mauser actions.

Your world opens up if you want to go "just" C&R as opposed to milsurp C&R ... Winchester 100, etc.

The FR-8 is definitely a conversation piece, and a handy little carbine. I saw one on Gunbroker a while back fitted with a non-interchangeable FAL magazine. How's that for a scout rifle? It still counts as C&R because the receiver is >50 years old. Also FR-7 and 1916s they were made from. If you're worried about safety with the 1916/FR-7 (the remaining pressure difference after accounting for different measurement methods), either try to find surplus 7.62 CETME, or load to 7x57 pressures.

The MAS 49/56 is only C&R if the receiver was made >50 years ago, whereas all MAS 49s and 49/56s in original 7.5x54 are C&R regardless of when they were made. A lot of the Century conversions don't work, but I've heard there are also a lot out there that run 100%.

Israeli K98 conversions are going to shoot like any other K98. I'm not sure it's worth getting in 7.62x51 when 8x57 surplus is still around (not like it used to be, but still) and 7.62x51 surplus is so expensive.

I've been tempted by the Ishapores. They're not conversions, and there's no debate on the Internet over them being made for a different loading, as with the Spanish Mausers.

There's also the Garand options. The CMP is selling them in .308 for $995, which isn't terribly expensive for a Garand, and cheaper than your other semi-auto options: C&R FAL, FN-49 (rare in 7.62x51), and BM-59 (Italian Garand conversion that takes interchangeable mags).

As others have mentioned, any commercial rifle >50 years old is an option, or any other conversion on a C&R receiver. The Mauser conversions are popular because of the common rim between Mauser and .308.

Had two FR-8's and while I liked them I rarely shot them so they went..

LOVE the ISHY Enfield, it's very accurate, soft shooting and as such sees semi reg range trips.. IMHO these rifles are great values..

Always wanted an IZZY Mauser in .308, mebe someday..

One more for the Ishapore.

I had to tweak the feed lips of my old one and replace the extractor spring shortly after I bought it, and also give it a really good cleaning. Other than that, it was a great rifle. They are still relatively cheap if you can find one from a private buyer or gun show sale.

Another Ishy advocate. I find it softer to shoot than I imagined it would be. Much easier on the shoulder than any of my other crank-handle guns (8mm) or any of the others that I've shot in a multitude of calibers.

Classic look, good shooting AND a common caliber!
What's NOT to like?

The FR-8 is a great short rifle, I think the ultimate truck gun. However, they have kind of dryed up and the one you find are overpriced. They do have a bit of a push when you drop the hammer, but when you carry it your know you have a RIFLE!!

You may also consider swap a 7.62 barrel on a mauser while available. I got 2 for myself for future projects. Pretty cheap.

This is a small ring, not strong enough for 308. I also have one of this. Got it free in a package deal! Noce little rifle, you can convert it into 7.62x39. I did 2 of them. Barrel available from Numerich around $120.

Came across a good deal. Green Mountain has it for $90 now, even cheaper than Numerich. Almost bought one myself for a nice 1995 mauser action I keep around, but I don't need another project now. You will need to rent a reamer to finish cut the chamber and blue or park the barrel. Extractor will extract but does not hold it tight to eject well. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/militar...ser-barrel,-21

That's a Belgian FN! Nice score!
FN was making those for Israel and commercial K98s for Sears at the same time.

Jakjak, that is sweet! Not sure where you got the Morocco idea from - as Eli said, it was made by FN in Belgium for Israeli. If you ever want to sell it or consider a trade, let me know!

The guy who sold it to me said that the barrel was re chambered at an Israelite armory in Morroco, IDK He was probably full of it.

Any way took it to the range today and it shoot really well,

15 shots on a paper plate at 100 yards and some pretty decent groups at 50
