Semi Auto Israeli DROR

Great segment on the history of the DROR and the shooting of a semi auto build at the 7 minute mark:

I liked the host's coment about "recoil remarkably violent and unplesant to shoot". But I can appreciate the history of the gun given the situation it was developed in.

Hmmm,

Neat gun, that reciprocating barrel does no favors for accuracy though. Its a shame the only magazine fed quick change barrel guns here in the states are $5k+ HK-11 clones.

You would think that with all the cool new triggers coming out someone would make an AR in 308 with a quick change barrel. That and one of the new FOSTech triggers and you wouldn't need to buy an NFA MG.

I've known Ian on a personal level for several years now. He's been out to my shop on a few occasions, and we taught classes at the same convention in Seattle.

While he does not look like a knuckle-dragging gorilla, I really don't think "sissy" is either fair or accurate.

"Sissy like Euro dude", that's him. Once you see his shows and compare to those made by " all American" fat guys and jarhead types difference is obvious.

I'm a pretty smart guy, and spending a few evenings down on the wharf with Ian made me feel like I was struggling to keep up. Can't say that about the fat Intertube types.

So thats why SouthPark suggests that Harley riders are 'Fags'!?

They were 8mm and used the BAR mags,.....the gun in the OP was almost certainly made from one of those kits. I doubt anyone in the US has ever seen a .303 mag outside of a reference book.

Strange that it is so unpleasant to shoot. The Johnson 1941 LMG was an absolute pussycat. Simply amazing recoil control of a full power .30-06. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to play with and shoot a Johnson 1941 LMG, and it was a significant leap over the BAR and BREN. Recoil management was bordering on amazing. Off hand full auto fire could be effective since the recoil of the 1941 was so mild.

The Johnson just came too late in the game. Had it showed up a couple of years earlier, I think it would have had a very good chance of replacing the Garand and BAR. The 1941 rifle was nearly as accurate, more simple for the solider to maintain in the field, and from a manufacturing standpoint, a huge leap forward. The Johnson receiver was made from a casting, and the first rifle to make use of investment casting. This would drastically reduce the cost per rifle, and the time it took to make each rifle. And of course the same for the LMG. Another big advantage is the quick change barrel on both the rifle and LMG (the LMG would have benefited most from that).

It wasnít without its issues though, and when you combine those issue with it showing up late to the dance; doomed the weapon program altogether. Both the rifle and LMG had reliability issues that needed to be worked out. But remember the Garand didnít really work when first adopted either. Given proper development time (which the Garand got, and Johnson didnít), no doubt the Johnson could have been every bit as reliable as the Garand and BAR.

The Israeliís loved the Johnson 1941 LMG, and they could immediately see the potential for it to be much better than the BAR and BREN. But the 1941ís they received were the same as what the US used in very small numbers and determined it needed more development...So it was just an un-perfected weapon.

The DROR was a great idea, but doomed from the get go. They just lacked the manufacturing & weapon development know-how to make it a reality. But it was a slick design and idea.

The Johnson just came too late for the US to be able to develop it up into what everyone hoped it could be.

I got the 8mm BAR like mags, they are easy to get.

I got the type1 in working order, but no mag...
