Shades of L1A1

Been working on a few L1A1 projects trying to semi replicate Poyer wood colors as well as original L1A1 paint. Two poyers to compare against two brits I painted, and two DSA L1A1's refinished by AZEX, all of the wood furniture was refinished by me. Enjoy

I'd say you've come closer than anyone else I've seen on here for a duplication of the Poyer wood, NICE WORK!!

Brownells sells a wood dye set, using the yellow, brown, and black, and alot of trial and error, you can get just about any shade of brown from a light yellowish to a darker brown to a mix with orange tints. The color I finally settled on was more of the original aussie or brit finish, darker than a Poyer and with less orange tint and a little more brown. Then apply about 6 or 7 layers of satin wax, and after it hardens, it forms a finish I was finally happy with. thanks for all the comments..

I wonder if an entrepreneur were to start a company manufacturing SLR L1A1 from various Commonwealth nations, if there would be a market for these rifles in the United States supposing that these rifles are exacting in every minute details to the original.

Since it is over 50 years old, do you suppose that there will be any kind of License Infringement concerns?

What do you fellows think?

Looks like the diff is you're refinishing coachwood while the Poyers use Myrtle Beech.

Don't think there will be any licensing issues to contend with but the problem will be generating enough volume of sales to justify the setting up of a manufacturing facility and assembly line. Figure that unless you can buy say 50 tons of spares (a la DSA from Steyr) from the UK, Canadian or Australian Govt, you have to make every single part from scratch.

Even with the advances in MIM technology, the price of making all the small parts would place it in the "not enough return on investment" bracket. Put another way; it would cost you more to set up and make the parts and the rifles than you could ever recoup in sales and profit.

Nice idea, looked at it years ago when I had money to invest, a decent source of parts and most of the blueprints for the L1A1. Came to the same conclusion; better off going to Vegas and throwing the cash on the roulette tables cuz at least I stood a chance of getting my money back.....

Truly nice work. What paint did you find to approximate the Sunkorite finish?? Envious as hell.....

The paint was gunkote bake on finish, a mix of roughly 3/5 matte black and 2/5 gloss black.

Way to labor intensive and expensive to build these days, they were even expensive back when they first came out. Without using MIM parts I would guess you would be looking at a few thousand per rifle easily.

I am thinking making them in the Philippines.
1911 pistols are made there along with the M16 and M4 rifles
for years now.

Excellent workmanship, and low labor cost.
Skilled workers.

Since my Filipino family has a mega-manufacturing company in Cebu, maybe I should speak with them about this idea and see what they think.

It was an article on the "top ten military rifles" in some magazine published in the early 90's that featured a poyer that got me into the addiction, after living/growing up in CA and literally DROOLING over such forbidden fruit for so many years, you might say I overreacted a bit when I finally moved into free country, so yeah, two

Two of the buttstocks, two pistol grips, and one handguard were new Aussie and covered in creosote, I sanded past that down to bare wood so that it would match the handguards and get the lighter colors, everything else was Brittish

YES........ you would have to try and get it done without Fabrique Nationale knowing. I believe if you do a search for post by Gun Plumber you will find he had a little issue with FN over some work he did.

That may be more because he was engraving "FN" or the entire "Fabrique Nationale" which is still a registered trademark versus a patented rifle design which has an expiration period.

FN is a mega-Corporation with unlimited funds and lawyers. They can have me coming and going if they choose to fight.

On the other hand, the FAL design is over 50 years old. Isn't there expiration date for this sort of thing?

How do DSA an Enterprise make the FAL I doubt they are paying big royalties to FN. You need to contact Lee Carpentari on the this board he has dealt with both the sales and import of weapons in the US.

Oh, and by the way, you have too many L1A1 FALs, you can't hog them like that especially when they're all the same type like that!
