What is the differnce between the Reminton 1100 and 1187?

I just took delivery of a Remington 1100 receiver and was wondering if there is a certain amount of parts interchangeability between the two shotguns, what is the real difference between the two? Would that be like the Pontiac and Buick brands General Motors used to sell?

I know the gas system is completely different as are the barrels. There are probably some small parts that are common but I suspect most of the major components are different.

An 1100 is either magnum or standard capacity. The magnum will only function correctly with magnum loads, and the standard with non-magnum loads. If the standard 1100 is fired with magnum loads, it will damage the gun, and if a magnum 1100 is fired with standard loads, it won't function correctly.

The 11-87 is designed so that it can be used with either standard or magnum loads and will function correctly and safely with both. Different gas porting and barrel design than the 1100, and parts are not interchangeable.

Is your 1100 receiver a standard or magnum?

My receiver is a standard twelve gauge receiver and for the $35 I got it for, it seemed like a good deal at the time. I just really wanted a new semi- auto shotgun, but could not see myself spending the money on a new one at this time.

For one thing, I believe the extractors are different. The 1187 is supposed to have a beefed-up extractor.
All I've ever shot in my 2.75" M1100 is slugs, and never had any problem w/ extraction.

I have never heard of a shotgun being used as a "race gun", but, it sounds interesting. That is until I can afford a Benelli M3.

they are fun to shoot with #7 shot. knocking down steel plate with it was a blast. All the extras that you can get for an 870 you can get for the 1100 even a wider charging handle and a speed spoon for the feed port.

1100 extractor is the same as the 870 extractor. I broke mine in a match after many, many years of shooting constantly. Most everyone else were shooting 870's, so during a break I simply swapped with one of the 870's that were not being used and finished the day. It's still in there after 5 years. I have shot low brass, high brass, slugs, etc. for many years and it seems like my right arm. I really like the 1100 and I have owned many a shotgun over the years.

You can shoot target (light) loads in a magnum 1100 if you put the 2 3/4" chambered barrel on it - they will cycle correctly. The difference is the 2 3/4" barrel has two gas holes while the magnum barrel has one. Works for me anyway.
