Vintage 2 Gun Match - Linwood, NC - 10/14/2017

A lot of you expressed interest in a local match I am setting up, so here goes!

The website will continue to be updated, but check it out at:

https://www.vintage2gun.com/

8:30am, October 14th, 2017

PHA Range - 10346 S Nc Highway 150, Linwood, NC 27299

This will be a "vintage" 2 gun (rifle and pistol) match. Rifles will be limited 1945 & older design. For the inaugural event, we will allow any pistol (semi or revolver) - you will just be limited to loading 7 rounds. Centerfire only for both, 9mm & up for pistols.

This is going to be a lot of fun...we have some unique stage design based on WW1 & WW2 events. Aside from being a different type of match it will be a good time to just hang out with other people who like cool guns

Oh and just in case you miss it on the website - there is a 5 second per stage bonus for wearing a uniform Any 1945 or older theatre/war permitted!

Registration will open on Practiscore in Sept, there is a link on the site.

Any questions just holler at me

You want to know what's funny? I was in Salisbury yesterday.

At this exact moment I don't want to repeat that drive anytime soon, but by October I just might be game. The dates look work-able. Let's see the course of fire!

Now to decide between the Garand and the Carbine. The 1911 is running great at the moment, although you realists will make fun of my gamer magwell and 10rd mags. I don't mind downloading, but 7rd mags won't fit anymore. :-)

My god...when did I become a gamer???

K, you could drop down and pick up stimpy. Easier drive when you have somebody to talk too.

I am in. Luckily I have several months to figure out which guns to bring.

B17, what is the lodging like in the area and which would you recommend (or the ones to stay away from)?

I'm in!

Our second oldest boy just moved to Charlotte a couple months ago. Blondzilla will be all over an October NC trip

Matt, did you really say "carbine"? This shoot just screams Garand / 1911 to me bro

Man. Y'all are gonna have fun. That is a great idea for a match! Too far, and during deer season, but I hope y'all have a great shoot.

That's what I thought too, but her web site specifically mentioned carbines and it made me go "hmmmm".

I've shot my Garand at many different matches, but I've never shot the carbine much. The Carbine is what my grandfather carried in the Pacific in WWII (even though he hated it and wished he had a Garand) along with a Thompson, so it might be neat to shoot it at a match.

I have a helmet, but no uniform. I may just wear it for fun!

Man I'm so pumped I get to see the RBGC FAL match crew twice in one year

Tac, I actually live 40 mins away from there so I can't recommend a place directly, but your best bet is to stay in Lexington, NC, which is the neighboring town. There should be at least five or so decent hotels for you to choose from, and it's a very safe/country area!

Kotengu/Matt I have no idea what I am going to shoot yet....I want to shoot it with all of my ww2 stuff I will probably end up using my garand but man if you have a carbine you know what a sweetheart of a rifle that is - very tempting also!! I looooove mine. It's the perfect firearm for me because it's so little and light. But my garand and I, we got history, we blood brothers...

Maybe if I'm lucky I'll have the stamp for my thompson by then (SBR)...but I'm not holding my breath. I at least got to go fondle it at the store the other day I want to find some original USGI wood for it.

Whatever WW2 rifles I don't end up shooting I will end up lending out to mousegun friends. I have a 1903 & a K98K too and of course a mosin nagant (required in any true old rifle lover's safe!)

Can we have a side match where we try to throw a hand grenade onto a tarp, shoot 8 rounds at 100 yds until the clip "pings", and then charge a hay bale with the bayonet?

We have also done that here

Actually, you mentioned that before, and I totally stole two of those ideas. One of my stages includes throwing a grenade into a Tupperware Bin about 15-20 yards away, and another one is going to include stabbing a haybale with a target in front of it using a decommissioned 1903 or a garand with a bayonet on it, I got to see where I can borrow one

A 5 gallon bucket in the center of a tarp makes a great "bullseye", but just landing it onto the tarp works too.

Remember the phrase "close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades"

Pistol calibers restricted to 9mm and up? That is not vintage! In fact, none of those calibers started a world war. Should allow 32ACP and people nearby (so we can include Nagant revolvers and Tokarev), 25 (Ian Flemming anyone?), and 380 (Archie the Duck cred).

For rifles, would the Hakim be considered vintage rifle because Ag42? What about the FN49?

Do you need ROs?

This is gonna be a tough call...

1917 Webley and No4mk1

or

1911 and Garand

I can't get to the page, are there different classes for bolt/semi?

Here ya go Stimpy:

Classes:

Semi-Auto Rifle & Semi-Auto Handgun
Semi-Auto Rifle & Revolver
Bolt Action Rifle & Semi-Auto Handgun
Bolt Action Rifle & Revolver
Pistol Caliber Carbine & Semi-Auto Handgun*
Pistol Caliber Carbine & Revolver*
(*likely will combine these two classes as a large amount of PCC is not expected)

Rifle requirement; must be originally designed in 1945 or earlier (modern day reproductions OK)

Pistol requirement; anything goes but magazine capacity limited to loading seven rounds. Speed loaders permitted for revolvers.

Equipment can be modern holsters/competition belts, or 1945 & older military style holsters/belts/etc so long as it is safe and falls within equipment requirements listed on Rules page.

B17. I second the assistance mode. Can't do the running and jumping required by the RO, but can do semi-stationary stuff. It sucks being old and decrepit.

I'm probably going to shoot a Garand and a Walther P38, because I have enough magazines for the Walther. Or enough walthers to have a bunch of magazines..

It hit me driving home today why that date seemed familiar.

10/15 is my daughter's birthday.

Sorry, gonna have to miss this one.

Stimpy, give her a carbine and a 38 revolver. Let her run the courses. If she has your or Jill's genes, she'll have a fine time for a unique birthday present/party.

Definitely making this one...trying to decide:
1. Garand amd 1911
2. M1903A4 and 1911
3. M1903 and 1911
4. M1 carbine and 1911
or....
5. k98 mauser and P38.....

What say y`all? 2 & 5 would be different, but 2 is scoped (original 2.5x...might as well be iron sighted lol) it`d be a beyatch to reload quick too.

With a design date of 1943, an SKS would be legal no?

While it was initially designed in 1943 and later tested in 1945, the SKS was not issued as a primary weapon until 1947.

The same holds true for the SAFN (FN49). It was initially design in the 1930's and prototyped just before WWII. Further developed in England, Enfield ordered several thousand rifles to be made for the Brits but the order was delayed. With the impending German defeat, Enfield cancelled the order. The final product rifle was completed back in Belgium and became a general issue rifle in 1948-9 time frame.

Speaking for myself and not the match director, I believe the intent of this match is to use weapons issued and in use prior to 1945. I think the match director will be along soon to clarify our thinking.

Wow. Where else can you drive for hours, bust out your manly full power bolt actions, M1s and .45 pistols and revolvers, shoot for speed and get your ass kicked by a girl. Sounds like a priceless experience if ever there was one.

PHA is a very nice range. No one is going to treat people like the FNG or display cliquish and catty behavior like on the hill at the 600 yard range of RBGC, or the downright hostile and confrontational types at CRPC. It's a very accommodating environment, much like the Georgia FAL Match that Stimpy hosts at RBGC.

If you miss this one, it's a mistake. Really big mistake. This is gonna be some good stuff. I'll take my ass-whipping like a man, have the BBQ lunch at the range afterwards, then drown my sorrows in scotch and water when I get home.

See? Everything will be OK, and we can discuss really cool stuff live and in person.

Good to hear! Glad I'm not the only one put off by the CRPC range Nazis. Only shot Garand matches at Riverbend, so I cannot speak for them.

Ha Ha!-You're certainly not the only one Danie. Some of those CRPC dudes have some serious social dysfunction issues. It was like, "Man, do you need some Valiums?" WTF!?!

But none of that crap at PHA. They made me feel like family when I went there and joined up.

I would love too but I will be at the HESCO Zombie Invitational that weekend good Sir. I also don't own (yet ) any C&R weapons that would allow me to qualify to shoot B17's awesome event.

I really do appreciate that and may be having convos with you about that in the future but for this date in question I am already spoken for. I am sure that B17 is going to host an event that will take off and be a biannual or annual event. You all take lots of pictures and videos for us that can't make it. I and Growler Gator and others will do the same from WV, especially if I can drag Bob outta his cave to join us!

HESCOs (shudder) and zombies with moderns? No way is that as cool as trying to shoot the antique stuff quickly. Maybe next time?

[smacktalk=on]No excuse James. I could hook you up with any of the WWII combatants you could want. Except Russia. Just like my shoulders too much to use one of those MN rifles. I guess shooting Zombies is a lot more fun. Don't worry about them eating your brains. Have to find them first. [/smacktalk]

Nuttz, I believe this will become a regular event, so start planning for the next one. Good luck at your Zombie shoot.

Getting my weapons load out ready. Narrowed down to my Inland 43 carbine and US Navy Victory S&W .38 or my No 5 SMLE and MKVI Webley in .455/.45ACP. Anybody a one man life raft so I can simulate a one man raiding/intel party.

Might be better to stick with the M1 Carbine, because, I dunno Chief, you're not getting any younger. Front line guns like that .303 Jungle Carbine bruise the flesh and rattle the bones. That dainty little Pouge/REMF U.S. Carbine is a real pussycat.

tac-40 I'm having a hard time deciding myself!! I posted this pic on the FB page today...I said something like, "having a hard time picking a date for the event...G1 get out of the pic I said you weren't old enough to go to the dance!" Whew, inner nerd showing thru there for a min.

I'm loaning out my 1903 and K98k. I'm likely going to go with my garand (who is my heart rifle!!!) unless my SBR thompson gets stamped before then (going on 11 months )

Just a reminder if you have the real deal, our range does not allow any full auto firearms on the premises (even if you're using select fire). We've also revamped the classifications a bit, check out the full deal here - LINK.

---------------------

Classes:

Service Rifle

+ Manually-operated action.
+ Nominal cartridge case length of 50mm or greater.
+ No more than 10 rounds loaded in the gun or any magazine at start signal.
+ Examples: Mauser, Enfield, 1903 Springfield, etc.

Self-Loading Service Rifle

+ Semi-automatic action.
+ Nominal cartridge case length of 50mm or greater.
+ No more than 10 rounds loaded in the gun or any magazine at start signal.
+ Examples: M1 Garand, SVT-40, AG-42.

Carbine

+ Semi-automatic or manually-operated action.
+ Nominal cartridge case length of less than 50mm.
+ No more than 15 rounds loaded in the gun or any magazine at start signal.
+ Example: M1 Carbine, SKS.

All Rifles/Long Guns Must Be...

+ Equipped with as-issued iron sights.
+ Chambered in a centerfire rifle cartridge.
+ No full-auto or select-fire weapons allowed.
+ Design must have been adopted and fielded by a military or police force, in or prior to 1945. Functionally identical caliber-converted rifles and commercial reproductions/replicas are allowed.
+ Equipped with as-issued (or equivalent) stock/handguards.

All Handguns Must Be...

+ Equipped with notch-and-post sights only.
+ Chambered in a centerfire cartridge safe for use on pistol-rated steel targets
+ No year/age restriction; modern designs may be used.
+ No more than 8 rounds loaded in the gun or any magazine at start signal

--------------------------

Anyone else dressing up in old uniforms?? My great aunt was a WAVE - I'm trying to put together an outfit like that! We will have a special drawing/prize for those who show up/shoot in uniform.

IM, looking at the carbine closer than the No 5. I am trying to complete and compete a visually correct service uniform for that time frame. Getting all of the kit for the Brit togs will be difficult at best. Looking through some of my Dad's Cruise books, I realized I have most of the USN uniform already. Khakis, ball cap, pistol belt, holster, and boondockers. This was used as shore parties from US vessels in the Pacific and Mediterranean Theaters. The weapons aboard many Naval vessels that didn't have a Marine contingent were 1903 Springfields, M1 carbines, 1911 pistols, .38 revolvers, BARs, and Thompsons. CPO's and Officers carried a handgun and/or a carbine. The enlisted carried the heavy armament. Garands, it seems, did not show up on board until late in the war.

While I do shoot my 03 and Garand much better than the carbine, I would not be role playing correctly by carrying those (my blue chambray shirts and dungarees don't fit any more ) Not sure if my old pistol belt fit either.

That's a very nice collection you got going on there B17.

The Match Director shooting an M1 Rifle and the big burly Submariner shooting a .30 Carbine-I'm sure the cameras will be out for that!

Jcornss is probably shooting a .303 Enfield and a P35. OK, we know he's a friggen weapons handling machine and even though he says he never fired a bolt gun in a 2 gun match, you know he'll have it figured out.

So already some stiff competition in the classes I'd shoot-Service Rifle and Self-loading Service rifle.

I was telling some of the guys about the match and they said to shoot whatever the Match Director shoots so they can make fun of me for getting my a$$ kicked by a girl!

But really, it's actually the great people and shooting cool guns that make these matches so much fun. Many thanks to B17 for making all this happen.
