Khakis, ball cap, pistol belt, holster, and boondockers. This was used as shore parties from US vessels in the Pacific and Mediterranean Theaters. The weapons aboard many Naval vessels that didn't have a Marine contingent were 1903 Springfields, M1 carbines, 1911 pistols, .38 revolvers, BARs, and Thompsons. CPO's and Officers carried a handgun and/or a carbine. The enlisted carried the heavy armament. Garands, it seems, did not show up on board until late in the war.

While I do shoot my 03 and Garand much better than the carbine, I would not be role playing correctly by carrying those (my blue chambray shirts and dungarees don't fit any more ) Not sure if my old pistol belt fit either.

Which one are you, Tac???

Well, since this was during my younger years when I WAS slim trim and racy, I would be that handsome guy with the great mustache and holding the near beer on the left. I need to tell you guys that I burned the candle from both ends while younger and I am now paying the price.

Alright hagar, another one I say I'm going to try to make if registration is still open. May have to drive separately but not sure yet. Having a little boy that is the apple of my eye is the best thing that ever happened to me, but between futbol season happening right now and regular Daddy Time, he really takes up a lot of my free time.

Have a high numbered Garand that I built up as a NM rifle that I've been dying to shoot, but have never shot an action match in my life (used to shoot static high power when I lived in MD). Just realized I have plenty of FAL, M14, and AK mag pouches, but not a single thing to carry en bloc clips or more than two pistol magazines with....just friggin pockets in my pants! May have to head to one of the big box stores for the first time in a long time....

Sounds great! I'd offer to drive if you go. I have a few Danish cloth bandoleers, they take 8 clips. The Walther P38 mags I will just stick in my belt. I have numerous p38's and holsters, but they only have room for 1 mag.

I checked registration earlier, still 76 slots open.

May take you up on that, I have some of the crappy cotton Greek Bandoliers but these have the tucked in pockets, not snaps and are they are slow to get the clips out of. Gotta get some more 1911 pouches. May even use my vintage Remington Rand 1911 even though the sights are as useless as tits on a boar hog. Do you have to bring a bolt gun and carbine too, or can you just compete in the class that you want to?

Well, I've been holding off and trying to move things around and shuffle wherever I could to make this. But now that registration is open I'm faced with the hard reality that my dance card is just too full right now, and I'm going to have to miss this.

I'm so sorry - I'm sure it will be a very cool match and I'll have severe match-envy when seeing all the pics/videos and reading all the reports.

You guys go and kill this thing and report back here!

Blondzilla is definitely coming with me to NC because one of our sons and his wife relocated there last spring. Depending on the plans with them however, I really doubt she comes to the actual match. Who knows, they may all three come out for a while

Everyone firing the self loaders. Jeez, might break a nail trying to yank and crank a boltgun. Afraid of looking like the proverbial monkey/football thing?

Just followed the links in the practiscor email I received verifying I was registered and paid. Then near the top of the page is a link to Vintage Rifle Match. Click that link. On the new page click match breakdown.

Hopefully, Tac-40 will yell at me at this match, like he has at every other match. Luckily, I always just laughed it off. Just have to remember to double up on my PTSD meds, and it will all be cool!🤣

I wasn't yelling. That is my normal voice volume. Spent too many years talking over monster marine diesels, turbines, and various pieces of naval propulsion equipment. I had a lady complain to my supervisor for yelling at her during an incident. He asked her "can you hear me now?", to which she replied "of course. I hear you perfectly." He then told her that I wasn't yelling at her because she would still be deaf if I had.

My days of yelling have come to an end. However, if it really makes you shoot better, I WILL make an effort to raise my voice and say snide and disparaging comment in your general direction.

Me too. Between ear infections that burst both my eardrums, riding motorcycles and flying planes, plus my shooting the last 40 years, I don't hear that great. Not deaf, and it varies by how much crap I have in my ears, but my wife tells me I speak too loud.

I got the most outstanding items to put on the prize table today. A brand new genuine styrofoam Pabst Blue Ribbon cooler and a case of out of date Walmart Pabst to go in it. Very, very cool. Now, maybe Otis Treekiller will come and pound a .303 Enfield for us.

Some of you people need to lighten up some. I go to these "matches" (god I hate that word for you overly competitive types) and I swear you couldn't drive an ice pick up your because pucker factor is in full swing! I mean, like, be safe, but this is supposed to be fun.

Just listen to whatever B17 says and I won't let Tac-40 yell at you too much. I AM a former USMC Drill Instructor-he wont be too much trouble to handle.

Well I won't be wearing sunglasses while shooting. Lost that Joe Cool factor long ago.

Glad to have you in the Squad IM. If you misbehave I'll just have to call you Drill Sgt to remind you to square away.

And I agree, this match is supposed to be fun. The only worrying you should be doing is making sure you pack everything you need and leave nothing behind. You know, clothes, guns, ammo, lunch money, sunglasses if you are not a member of Squad 4, etc.

B17 and her crew will make sure the match is run correctly and safely, we are there just to have fun and meet good people.

Sounds like at least we have some type of plan here Tac-40, with the Maritime Services covered anyways. Hopefully you don't squeeze that US Carbine too hard and break it. I'm sure you will look like a grizzly bear wielding a toothpick.

Well, of course we want you in 4th squad Jason. You will make us more powerful than we already are. Just need Otis and Airground with his G41. On that note, I’ll have to shoot some of my exotics at a later Vintage 2 Gun. Jason, you’re shooting an ShtLE No.1 MkIII and a P35 Brownoing, right?

Ha Ha! Very funny Tac. The US Navy didn’t make you a Chief in the Silent Service because you weren’t intelligent. You KNOW the difference between a Drill Sergeant and a Drill Instructor. Couple examples:

Army Drill Sergeant: Tells you: “You better move!!!”

Marine Drill Instructor: Tells You he’s going to non surgically remove your testicles, among other things, and with much more colorful language.

Yep, I've been there a long time ago. Found out the hardest substance in the world was the brim of the DI's hat whacking me right on the bridge of the nose while he was instructing me on the proper procedures for .... Hell, I don't remember because of the pain. And that was back in the day when a little physical intervention was okay.

Now, I have been thinking about switching rifles. I have a Hakim in 8mm. Since that is a direct copy of the AG-42, just re-engineered for the larger cartridge, would that be allowed by the rules? The AG-42 served well in WWII.

Actually, the Millennials continue the hands on legacy. Some may say they can’t fill our shoes, or it will never be the same etc. It’s how the new kids are able to survive gunfights.

Where is everybody staying while in town? I got a room at the Econo Lodge in Salisbury. According to Google Maps it is less than 8 miles from the range. Since it looks to be about a 4 hr trip (per GMaps), I am staying Friday and Saturday. I figure the trip through Charlotte will be a bit longer than expected.

For those of you in the Charlotte area, what is the best time on Friday to come through?

This is awesome, I'm so pumped

Avoid highway 77 at all costs anytime Friday afternoon. Which, I don't know if that will matter anyway because most of you will probably come in off of 85...but they are adding (toll) lanes on 77 between approx exit 19 and 36, and it is an absolute shit show during the week, let alone on a Friday afternoon!

Who all is going to be running the match in period dress? My biggest problem it the shoes. Don't have my old issue boondockers and can't find equivalent substitutes.

B17, what is the pistol course of fire? And will speed loaders be allowed for the revolvers? Just finalizing my load out plan. And last but not least, are the rifle and pistol match portions broken into separate stages that add up to the total round count or one big stage with max XX fired for score.

Never mind. Just re-read the intro and saw there were five stages for the total round count.

Of course, to get the full effect of manipulating and firing these iconic weapons, clothing is part of the equipment. Some may be too self conscious, or be like “They’re all gonna laugh at you.” Fortunately, I don’t give a shit what anybody thinks about me. And I know that anybody that laughs, well, the way I’m dressed is not thier problem. The problem is inside them. All they have to do is look inside themselves and they’ll see it, but that’s usually way too overwhelming, and much too much reality.

I’ll be dressed as an early 20th century Marine. Wow, didn’t see that coming. I bet there won’t be any stitch counters and I certainly won’t complain about shoes having rubber soles when they should be leather etc. My Campaign Cover will be one I was issued. A bit different, but close enough to the older version. My shoes will be modern dress leathers with canvas leggings-plenty close enough.

Jason is really good and is shooting an SMLE and a Hi Power, so I’m shooting an ShtLE (SMLE) No.1 MkIII made in 1917 and a pre-war Browning Hi Power made in 1940. Marines are well known for picking up weapons of opportunity, so at least loosely period “correct”!

Me! I'll be doing this in some kind of heels most likely, so no bitching about footwear.

Yep! Also if you go here - https://practiscore.com/pha-vintage-2-gun/register and click on stages, we have them all uploaded so you can see what you're in for. Speed loaders are fine!
