Any FALers in Illinois???

I live in Pontiac, Illinois and from here is feels like no one else in the entire state owns an FAL. This seems strange to me since the DSA factory is only about 80 to 90 miles from my house. Rarely do I see an FAL in any local gun shops. Do any of you shoot your FALs? At a recent "Guns Save Lives" meeting a collector brought two FALs to display. He had fired one of the two rifles once in 12 years!! What the hell, who would own a rifle this long and practically never shoot it? In Pontiac I belong to a very active gun club that conducts 2 CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) matches per month, 4 action rifle, 6 action pistol, 2 action shotgun and 2 two gun (rifle and pistol) matches per year. FALs are welcome in the CMP and applicable action matches. The Chief City Shooters Club CMP matches place FALs in the modern military class with other rifles such as M1A, AR15, SKS, AK47, AK74, FN49 and basically any semi-auto military style rifle other than an M1 Garand or M1 carbine from any country in the world. Each CMP match I conduct has three classes M1 garand, Springfield 1903 and a3, vintage military, and modern military. Half of the competitors bring 2 to 3 rifles so a typical match consist of 3 relays. In the past all competitors have been able to fire in the first relay so no one has had to wait to shoot. Match entry fees are $12 per rifle for non-club members. More match information can be found at Chiefcityshooters.com.

Building an FAL

Greetings,

I live in Eureka and am building my first FAL.
I think they are one of the coolest rifles ever made.

Dude you live in IL. That should pretty well sum it up. I went into a IL gun shop once. I had to give them my MO ID (DL) so I could handle a long gun I wanted to look at. The guy I was with had to give them his FOID card before he could look at any firearms.

There are at least a couple more. Shot with a couple FALfiles guys at a High-power match when I was visiting family near Springfield. Was at probably the coolest range I ever shot, you could see the IL capitol building over top of the backstop.

It's a little odd that very few people who live in the state where DSA has their factory own an FAL. When I take my one and only FAL to a rifle range most people have never seen or even heard of one so they have one or two questions and that is the end of their interest. Like every where else in America people here are AR15 crazy. In general people here think if a rifle weights more than 7.5 pounds its too heavy, anything larger than 5.56mm is a BIG caliber and if the barrel is over 16 inches in length its too long.

I know what you mean. They are AR-15 crazy. Half don't know what a FAL or an M-14 is

I'm still a fan of the FAL and StG.58, but sold mine back in October. I'll have another one day.

Southern Illinois here.

I live in Indiana only less then 10 miles from the IL border. Same crap want to see a FOID card. I avoid IL Gun laws and high taxes on ever thing. No wonder we have some many people moving to Indiana better gun laws and lower taxes. I hate Shitcago
