What's everyone building?

I'm about to wrap up a galil, looking what's on the horizon for the next big thing! What's everyone else building?

Just finished a .308 Norma Mag. 26" Douglas light varmint bbl on a Mod 70 action. Sure it's a dated, scarce, and pricey chambering but 308 Norma has always been one of my all-time favorite cartridges.

Holy crap!

I just got done assembling (not "building") an Aero Precision AR-10 in 6.5 Creedmoor. I hope it shoots as well as I imagine it will.

Also just slapped together a couple of ARs with some decent parts - Noveske barrels, bolts, and carriers. I need a bigger glass budget.

Building a long range gun, or at least threatening to. Savage model 12 in .243 winchester, match profile heavy barrel. Plan on dropping it in a Master Class Anschutz-style prone stock. I have all the parts needed, the pillars, Tubb buttplate etc. Next step is to get off my duff and build a jig so I can route a channel for the handstop rail, I've been mulling on how to do this for about the last six or seven years. Although I'm starting to run out of patience with myself and thinking I'm gonna finally dive into it.

Sorta looking about for a 18" .223 Wylde lightweight barrel. For some reason, all the AR's I've built are a bit heavier than desired. The A1's we had in the 60's were lighter and quicker, but I'm not a "Retro" fan, flat tops and Free Floated handguards are OK by me.

Then, long after the Imbel Receiver group buy is over, I am thinking I would like to build that matched Imbel kit after all, maybe next time.

Not to forget the Win 94 26" round/octagon in 30 WCF that should be finished some day sooner than later.

Well, I have not actually built an FAL or SLR in a short while now, but got some pieces parts here and there. I have a really nice nearly complete Belgian wood stocked lower that, like embatp and 4x401, may need built into a Belgian HB in the future. I've been side tracked by motorcycle projects, work and building a new room in my basement. I may get back out to the shop to work on some lathe bits for the FAL/SLR guys here, too. I think this SRA marked lower would make a nice start to a project, eh?

Would love to see some pics if you can.

My first car was a '65 Bronco, still love the early ones. A local guy had a '68 Roadster he bought new and kept in immaculate condition. Old guy died 5 years ago and his nephew has it now, just rotting away in the field. I have tried and tried to buy it from him but he always just says "no way I'm gonna fix it up". Well it didn't need fixing when he got it and I've known him all his life and know it will be rotting away right where it sits in 30 years. So sad.

Actually besides the sawhorses I mentioned above I'm working on a '78 F-250 4x4 Crewcab, the holy grail of '70s Ford 'F' series.

I snapped together one those piece a crap AR's that use such crappy magazines just a couple of weeks ago. It's a plain vanilla A2 with a MOE PG, trigger guard and, a heavy barrel just like the Marine and Army guys. It also has one of those newer, faster "F" marked for faster front sight blocks. Hope it works.

I think.

Next build on the boards is a Bulgarian 74 kit built as a 5.56 rifle with a hungarian underfolder. Or maybe I'll finish my Lybian FAL or maybe I'll build the Bulgarian 74 sidefolder or the Hungarian AKM 63.. decisions, decisins..

Finished restoring a lafette 34 and now working on the MG34 semi. I think I'll do another MG34 after that. Then not sure M53 or SG43 or BREN.

Does a house addition and remodel count? It's technically the start to several build projects, as I will actually get my own room to work on such things out of it. We're adding warehouse space for the wife's online biz, a master suite, widening the entire house about 6ft, fixing some slab issues, getting a new kitchen, and hopefully some much-needed peace of mind, all while still living here. Should all be worth it, but dropping WELL over a $100K is still a tough pill to swallow. So guess who won't be buying any guns for a while...

I'm about to put together my first FAL. Bought an Imbel receiver from a gun store on gunbroker and have an Imbel kit coming from sarges military surplus. Just have to decide what 922r parts to use.

I've previously built several ARs and AKs.

I sure wish the cost of 7.62x51 ammo would go down. I no longer shoot anything I have in that caliber because the cost to replace the ammo I put away years ago is way to high!

If the cost would come down I would might build one of those BM59 kits I have seen out there, but the ammo price is just way to high to consider it at the moment.

Snugglebutt, I appreciate the interest, but at the cost these things are bringing now I may use them as part of my retirement saving plan, AK kit prices seem to be insane these days.

I just slapped together an AR in 7,62 x39, Adams arms piston conversion kit, carbine buffer, 16" melonited barrel, Anderson upper and lower, Daniel defense trigger, 7,62 firing pin, magpul furniture - opened up the gashole, ground the feed ramps as per a Bushmaster - and she shot 5x30 rounds of Wolfe military classic without a hitch - for around $500. She didn't like the Golden Tiger - so I will shove in a Wolfe spring to combat that - we will see how she fairs over time! She runs clean and cheap - so far!

Just completed phase one of my Short Gas Para build.

A few years ago I bought a new barrel for a K98 short chambered in 30-06. As I was reaming the chamber to set the head space, I misread the travel dial and over cut the chamber by .100. I didn't want to waste the barrel so I cut the chamber end down and chambered it for .308W.
It was now too short for a K98 barrel, but would be useful for that short gas para build that I had rolling around in my skull. So, I set it aside and moved on to other things.
I recently found that barrel in the box o FAL and decided that it was time to get on with the project. So I trimmed it up, cut new muzzle threads, set a sleeve for the gas block journal, and mounted a Gas Block.

The barrel is 14 3/8 inches bare, and 16 3/8 inches with a blind pinned muzzle brake/compensator mounted.

I made a barrel nut with the hand guard ring built in to it. I didn't take any pics of it because I am goofy and taking pics is an after thought.

Here is the rifle all twisted up and ready for the range. I set it next to a standard rifle for scale.

Oh yeah. I just remembered that this rifle is using a set of standard recoil springs that have been trimmed on the ends. I ran a reamer through the recoil spring hole on the para carrier so that the standard springs would fit. I made this mod back when para springs were unobtainable. It seems that it was unnecessary now, but what it done is done.

This one is a disappointment. It is unpleasant to shoot and produces poor accuracy. The recoil sensation is nearing painful. I was truly shocked at how unpleasant it was. Adjusting the gas to reduce the recoil pulse resulted in unreliable performance.
I could live with the recoil if it was even moderately accurate. The best groups were produced with Austrian HP ammo and they were pitiful. 4 MOA was the best that it produced and at .50c per round, I am not interested.

So, I will dig into my box o fal and twist up another barrel and press on.
