I'm gonna call it done

Several here will recognize this riFAL for what it is because I have "ding-donged" them with emails, PMs, and/or phone calls for advice over the last few months. Mucho gracias mi amigos

Others may know what they are seeing, simply from seeing my threads and/or MP acquisitions over the past few months.

Even more "others" will see this photo and think "OMG what a bastard monstrosity of an FAL". That is OK too.

With a very slight "niggle" in the back of my mind regarding an L1A1 wide mag release, after my range day with her yesterday and my work schedule the next couple of months, I'm gonna call it DUNN!

I do plan to do the Jeter challenge soon when time & weather permit, but any flaws will fall in the hands of the "loose nut behind the trigger" and not in the riFAL.

I see nothing wrong with it. Course, you should see some of the mutts I've put together. If it runs reliably, and is accurate enough to do what it's supposed to do, then I'd say well done sir.

It is actually more like "light brown and 50 shades of gray".

Between the flash, auto-correct, and starting with a cheap camera....Orange & black indeed. Yuck

I do indeed need to work on my photography skills and my hardware

I think it's perfection for you! That is what matters. I love perfect builds that have every last screw that is correct for a specific year, maker, and model. I also enjoy taking the parts from every FAL we love personally and building our own FAL that is ours. I have been sellecting parts to build a Styer STG58 barrel assembly, with a Imbel receiver type 3, with a STG 58 Belgium lower that has matching bolt and carrier. Lastly it will have a wood grip and a type C wood stock with a trap door, metal hand guards that I have been testing some heat resisting materials that we are working on at work.

It has been "fired up" Gary. Pushing 300 rounds since the original build a few months ago with various iterations of testing with various parts.

On Friday I did a complete shuffle of mount/rings/scope.

Yesterday, I shot 40 rounds to re-sight both the Burris XTR and the Nikon BDC at 50 yards, and with the last leftovers in the mag banging my 100 yd steel plate.

Time will tell what it does at 100 yards and further. At 50 yards yesterday from a lead-sled in windy, cold, crappy weather, it consistently shot cloverleaves and all were 3 rd groups that could be covered by a quarter when I did my part. The occasional flyer was me that I knew when I pulled the trigger.

In the near future when time & weather coincide, I will shoot the "Jeter Challenge" of 2 five round, 100yd groups, fed from the mag.

Just for the record, the 50 yard groups yesterday were all shot from 2 mags loaded before ever going down to the range. The first round was "racked in" by hand and then the riFAL was just shot by trigger pull.

This riFAL is surprisingly solid, which means any misses belong to the operator.

ARMs mount & rings on a Burris XTR 1-4 for 3-gun and fun shoots.

ARMs mount and a Nikon Prostaff BDC 3x9 for hunting. I think they are Tasco rings on that set-up IIRC.

Range report:
Ambient-Sunny, light breeze, upper 30s.
Distance-92 yards by laser range finder
Position-On a bench with a lead sled.
Ammo-Perfecta 308, 147gr, FMJ

This riFAL and scope set-up was previously sighted at 50 yards. The ARMS top cover mount has been slid on and off several times since to help judge consistency when reinstalled.

Today:
I first shot 10 rounds with the first one being loaded by manually pulling back bolt release. Last 9 of 10 fed via mag and cycled by riFAL.

Then tweaked the scope adjustment and shot first 5 shot group.

I paused and re-filled the mag. The first round after mag re-fill (loaded manually) was purposely shot off target.

The last two 5-round groups were all cycled by the riFAL.

Total time including mag loading, photos between groups, scope adjustment, and everything was about 30 to 40 minutes.

It just dawned on me after looking at these photos again that the 5 shot groups all had two "sub groups" of high and low. I did not keep track of this to know, but I am wondering if those sub-groups are separated by left side of mag/right side of mag loading???? Hmmm??

The subgroups are dictated by the capricious whim of the FALgods.

Chuck Norris wishes he had that power.

Sad but true, it ain't done....

Yesterday morning I shot it with eyeguy and rbgonoles in FL. Other than just great guys to shoot and spend time with, I also planned for all three of us to try shooting the Jeter Challenge with it for posterity. It was not to be.

First off my own shooting was far from good yesterday which I blame on Blondzilla for keeping me out late Saturday night (actually early Sunday morning). Let's just say I was not in "top form" at the range yesterday morning, but I dang sure was on Saturday night

I had a rest to shoot from, but not a lead sled or sand bagged in tightly. My groups were improving as the morning progressed, but I never shot better than about a 4 MOA 5 shot group. Eyeguy shot a couple 5 shot groups which were pretty good but rbgonoles did not even get a chance to shoot it before the malfunction.

When I disassembled the original Imbel kit I did not think about the gas tube being pinned and simply forced it out (because I am a dummazz), damaging the threads in the process. I cleaned up the threads and the ID of the tube with the idea to replace it soon, then promptly forgot about it for a month or so. Recently I saw a NOS tube in the MP here which reminded me so I got it and threw on my bench for later installation, which I also then proceeded to forget about. Keep in mind that I now have several hundred rounds down the pipe on this build and was feeling good about it, even though I knew it has an issue that needed correction but had not made the top of the priority list yet.

After about 50 rounds yesterday, the riFAL quit cycling. Yep, the gas tube fell out of the gas block I also had trouble with one mag that never had trouble feeding in the past. In hindsight, I think that mag issue was actually an "early warning" of the weak gas I was getting. The airplane ride and a week of riding around in a rental car trunk I believe was enough vibration to loosen up a very "iffy" component.

When I get home this weekend, priority one will be to replace the gas tube which I should have done many weeks ago. It will be back in fighting form for the WA and GA shoots, but as HBR suggests, I ain't gonna call it "done" anymore

It's not "done", but it is once again operating operationally

(No notable improvement on the nut loose behind the trigger.)

You can always shoot my .223 Fal and get the "other" award..

But then, I have 2 of them at least, and I may shoot one as well.
