That would be my vote as well.

I have a magazine with some of the mint green paint like the first pic. Glad to finally see a rifle with the same paint on it. Neat pics. Thanks for posting them.

I'm curious what would be the legality of bringing back all the parts aside from the receivers and barrels on a plane? I'm assuming there's nothing stopping anyone from doing that since they're basically just parts and pieces of metal.

Judging from the mix of fal types and the BXP, Commando SMGs & Stryker shotgun
the FAL with the auction tag has a NATO bin # on the mag well
there is also an Imbel type 3 in the back row ,muzzle down with
blue paint on the stock
these are probably Rhodie rifles that made it into South Africa

It would be a shame if they are being destroyed

OK, more info

This is an batch of 600-ish Rhodie surplus riFALs legally imported and now in South Africa. Sadly, they are not in my basement, nor in Paco's

I only looked at random samples in any detail, but here are a few observations. Again, not a complete study in any way, but a general idea of what the Rhodesians were working with, which is apparently whatever they could get past the sanctions as I have always heard. I will try to work out more info in the future, but my "day job" is taking priority here.

-The vast majority were FN or ZA manufactured with type 1 receivers and standard combo device.

-Roughly half the ZA manufactured ones were sanitized, half not. I'm told the Rhodesians always promised to do so, but often did not follow through with that commitment.

-A lot of type 2 receivers in the mix as well. Guessing maybe 10% or less but a notable number. Again, not a study in any way, but at quick observation I did not match up the use of type 2 receivers to HBs, FN manufacture, or any other easily recognized pattern. They were just scattered around in there.

-I saw at least two L1A1s and two type 3 receivers which sort of confirms they took what they could get. The SLRs were in the bottom of a stack so I did not inspect, but was told they likely came from Australia. One of the type 3s I did handle and was definitely an Imbel.

-A surprising number (to me) had G1 flash-hiders and shortened barrels in the mix. Just a guess, but maybe 10% or more were in some unexpected or modified configuration from the classic R1.

I appreciate you sharing your observations, Invictus.

That 16" looks really handy. Makes me want to take a gamble on receivers and get the rest of my parts and 17.3" barrel built.

Did the non sanitized R1s actually have the big South African crest on the right side of the magwell, or just the little Lyttelton crest between the R1 and the 7.62mm marking on the left side?

In most period photos of these rifles they still seem to have most of their paint. This really worn, silvered look came from them having to soldier on in Mugabes forces. I have a set of Rhodie furniture about to go on a rifle that has that non characteristic tan paint on it. Looks like Zimbabwe put it on over the top of the baby poop yellow and green.

I ran into this when found L2a1 gas blocks from multiple European suppliers who had them piled in five gallon buckets like I pile smaller pieces of scrap metal at work. Found three vendors with hundreds that at least communicated with me but when discussed idea of getting them to U.S. either all, some or just one they vapor locked. Quoted changing export laws from their countries, import laws into U.S. and if I wanted to hire lawyers and customs brokers to work out legalities on both ends, if could be done legally, they would be happy to sell them. Did a little research and now I look at the photos with 55 gallon drums of uncut receivers and enough parts to change the U.S. FAL landscape and figure if could be done, someone with means and already in the business would have.

The Rhodesians captured no more than a couple dozen (and I think I'm being generous on that) folding stock rifles,

That is extremely low from what I have seen down here, but from the surplus stuff brought out over the last several years, yes para models are now like hen's teeth. Were there very few to begin with, or just very few after the "cherry picking"? IDK????

They had some for sure, but again, they would also take whatever they could get.

They were also mostly handing out sticks rather than scalpels to front line troops, as near as I can tell.

I'm not sure if this belongs in this "cool South Africa FAL pix" thread or perhaps in the "Friday night drinking" thread? It was part of MY Friday night drinking

Nonetheless, here ya go. Friend of a friend and a very nice young lady.

Well sure it can! I made one from a DSA product. Hahaha . I do see what looks like one T3 in those pics, minus poo paint. I'm curious if there is any electro-pencil on that T3?

short FAL

That really short FAL has a barrel under 16". I know a two people who built them. I cant remember the exact length in MM but it cut just in front of the sling swivel flare leaving just enough room the thread a combo device on.

I even saw a picture and description in a book that one guy had and thats what lead him to do the first clone, then the other guy followed suit.

The SHORTY specs according to my friend is 380mm (14.96" oal) barrel length.

The shorty is appealing especially with the B stock. I assumed that the baby pooped B stocks I have had been on a G1 but perhaps not.
