PICS UP! FAL Primer 235 pages, 1200 color images

The FN FAL Primer
The Collector's Guide to the FAL and SLR Rifles

Tyroler & Adams, 2018

10x8
hardbound
235 pages, 1200 color images

It's been a long time coming with occasional updates here...so here's the latest and we're just about there.

Today I received the proof copy, and am generally satisfied. A few tweaks to image sizes and it should be ready to distribute. Thanks to all the many contributors, to my co-author Kevin Adams, and the years of support from Andy The Aussie.

The book generally follows a two-page per topic format, with copy (writing) on the left and images on the right page. Like this:

Contents (typically 2 pages per topic):
Major Assemblies
Headspacing
Inch or Metric?
Upper receivers Type I, II, III, Inch
The Para
Selector Markings
Type A, B, C and Inch lower, stocks, PG
Safety Sear: Is my FAL automatic or not?
The Road to the FAL

Closes with three full page photos

The copy (writing) layout sucks, a defect in the software I used. However, the information is there.

I used good paper, so am generally quite happy with the photos. You'll notice I used "full bleed" meaning there is no white space between photos, no photo sub-titles; that saves about 20 pages ($10) per book.

What's it going to cost you want to know. Well, what is a full color book with loads of useful information worth?

My cost is outrageous since I started with on-demand publishing and never gave up on it. That means 85% of the price goes to the printer. No kidding. Hindsight is 20/20. We're looking at a retail price of about US$150 right now for a image wrap hardcover (that means the image is printed right onto the hardcover). Examples with the dust jacket and soft copy are an option, but save so little.

Think that's expensive? I have over 2000 hours into the book. I personally took over 3000 photos; Kevin and Andy each over 1000. I amassed over 10,000 photos from the internet. I Photoshopped over a thousand images. Six trips to Lithgow, Australia. I will never, ever make back the financial investment, and I'd have made a lot more money working at McDonald's instead. So I think I can get $20 "profit" LOL...and there is $150 worth of information and entertainment in the book.

The plan now is to make final tweaks. Then run 10 or 20 copies of the Contributors' Edition (you and I know who you are) at a slight discount to thank those who gave so much. Figure that will be $140 per copy. If you're interested and deserving of such a copy, post below.

Then we'll release the book for general sale. I'm evaluating selling it on Amazon, which is an option.

Hopefully this book will be well received. We really do hope so, since Kevin, Andy, and I already have the follow-up book done (don't ask what it is, we're not saying.)

Cheers, mates. And thanks for all the help getting here!

Well, knowing how much time you've all put into this project, I'm in for a copy. At a bill and a half, I think the cost is well worth it. Hell, I spend nearly that much on my monthly fuel bill. I'd also pay a bit more if you blokes would autograph my copy, 'twould mean a lot, and it'd keep me from ever selling it in the future.

Absolutely in for one as well !

For any folks who weren't aware, 'nog has been busting his butt on this for years, the project has involved a huge effort on his part as well as many others. I have absolutely no doubt that the results will be more than worth the asking price. Does $150 sound high ? I think that between the time and effort put into it as well as the wealth of knowledge I anticipate it containing, at that price it will be a STEAL !

Here is a typical "rifle page" format.

It's interesting that the link for your attachment comes up when I quote your post, but nothing comes up otherwise.

I was thinking that I might have to reassess my buy comment...

Well, obviously it comes up when I 'work' on your post, but not when I post it too...

Or is it just me...?

The book generally follows a two-page per topic format, with copy (writing) on the left and images on the right page. Like this:

http://1919a4.com/attachment.php?att...2&d=1517854847
...
Regarding the pictures, if you click on the image link, it opens a new browser window that says the attachment is a 1x1 gif image.
Maybe that's why they don't show up.

Actually put me down for 2. I know a fellow paratrooper in Belgium that would probably like to have a copy too.

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. But I want it autographed by you, Andy and Kevin.

Thanks to Richard W for hosting the photos, you should now be able to see the cover and two examples in the first post.

I finished review of the proof copy this morning. Two instances of swapped photos and a bunch of spelling/ grammar errors (grrr). Also have to do another check on Contributors to ensure that those who helped are recognized.

Then I have to make the changes. Photos are no big deal but any changes to the copy (text) crashes the development program, so I'll have to see if I can even fix the typos.

Almost there...
