Best .22 uppers and mags

Have plenty of lower assemblies presently. What I am looking for is the best .22 rim-fire upper and mag combo to make a low cost (to shoot, that is) rifle to round out the AR corner. Any thoughts or experience in that area? Already went down the conversion insert road and was not thrilled with the performance of rim-fire bullets in a 5.56 barrel.

Performance of .22 rimfire in a AR barrel is dependent on your barrel twist for the most part. My 1 in 12 barrels are accurate and actually my 1 in 7 is not bad either.

I use the drop in cmg conversion kits and black dog mags and I am happy. Never have used a dedicated rimfire upper.

...not exactly on topic, but I have a 1980s Colt conversion kit with a few original mags.

It runs flawlessly with high velocity rounds. The mags are damned near indestructible.

Like SIG220 pointed out, you will get best results with a 1/12 barrel (or 1/14... they are available if you are building from scratch).

If I was to build a .22lr dedicated upper (I have wanted to, too many other pokers in the fire.... but I have researched it), I would build a traditional AR upper with 1/14 barrel, and toss in a CMMG .22lr kit (excellent reputation). Going this route, you still have the option of dropping in a 5.56 BCG if you ever want to play with 55 grain and lower rounds.

3. Upper receiver and FSB/gas block of your choice.
4. Handguard configuration of your choice.

My CMMG 22LR barrel with CMMG basic phosphate bolt assembly runs very well. Black Dog Machine mags with stainless lips are my favorite. Rest of upper pieces are unimportant for function.

I built a dedicated 22lr upper using the CMMG barrel and bolt kit. It was little more spendy than the chamber conversions but well worth it. They can be purchased for less, but you have to shop around. My rifle routinely puts 5 shots touching at 25 yard with me slung up and prone. One of these days I'll bench rest it to see what it can really do. Mounted a Vortex 1X6 Strike Eagle on it. Used that setup at an Appleseed to get my Rifleman patch.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Now for some research into all the suggestions made. I especially like tac-40's offering from CDDN as it fits into my plan for topping an unused lower. Even better, a pistol lower with no buffer tube and short barrel. (play toy) But first, research all ideas presented.
Once again guys, thanks for sharing.

CMMG also has 4 and 9 inch pistol barrels for that same setup if you want to go that route:

9 inch below.

Nine inch looks like a plan.

Ended up choosing the M4 set up. Now to gather up the smaller parts needed.

I you want one that shoots the best....

I bought a Compass Lake Engineering .22 LR upper and it shoots like a dream:
http://www.compasslake.com/index.php...index&cPath=22

My go-to .22 LR ammo has always been the old Wolf Match Target, which was made by SK in Germany. It shot well and functioned in every .22 rimfire I ever tried it in, except the CLE .22 upper. The CLE upper works and is exceedingly accurate with CCI Standard Velocity.

There is another match quality .22 LR upper available from Keystone. I have two of their .223 uppers and they shoot exceedingly well, but I do not have one of their .22 LR uppers:

I ended up getting the the M4 setup to build into a new rifle. Was impressed with the build quality and reviews. Although it ain't built yet, I have high expectations.
And then there is the other suggestions in this thread about using this bolt unit in an existing .5.56 barrel. My xm177 has a 1 in 12 twist...why not?
