hammer bite

So a coworker showed me his bandaged thumb yesterday and said "see what I did shooting my 1911!"

I said "Your thumb? Did you get it stuck in the ejection port?"

"Nope, was holding it different this time while shooting it."

"How were you holding it?"

"You know that round thing on the back?"

"The grip safety?"

"That round hook thing on top of it."

"The beavertail?"

"Yeah that thing. I had my thumb on top of it."

"Why?"

"Well we were drinking..."

Oww. Normal hammer bite is annoying. That sounds down right painful.

But then he earned it drinking and shooting. I don't hang out with folks like that more than once.

What a maroon.

I like shootin' and I like drinkin'; I just make sure to do the latter AFTER the former.

I own a number of auto pistols that are notorious for inflicting hammer bite and otherwise drawing blood from a large segment of the shooting clan.

The M1911, the Browning HP, the Swiss made Sig P210, the Walther PP series, and more. But I have smallish hands and so far have been immune to hammer bite.

I was at the club range one summer afternoon when one of the idiot members decided to violate club rules and popped the tab on a can of beer. It clearly wasn't the first one he had that day. I reminded him of the rule against alcohol consumption on the range. He told me to mind my own effing business and proceeded to staple up targets.

I packed up my gear and got ready to leave. But not before writing down the vehicle description and license plate number. I called the club president later that day and let him know about this clown. The president had previously warned this member about drinking on club property and revoked his membership for "cause". Good riddance......

And so it goes.

I'm ok with drinking and shooting as long as hammer bite was the only injury suffered. Reminds me when I was a about 19 and down in Biloxi with this guy. He wanted to shoot my Ruger Blackhawk behind the club. Careful with that Axe Eugene.

I got it bad on one outing while doing a quick switch to southpaw. Right thumb was just in the wrong place and got run through by the sharp corner of a 1911 slide Right to the bone with skin and tissue rolled up like shavings from a hand plane on a piece of wood.

Wasn't drinking when it happened. Just being complacent and not being focused. The pain brought things back to a state of perspicacity in a flash. Never again.

I had the same thing happen as a young teen the very first time I ever shot a semi-auto. It just never crossed my mind about the slide coming back and nobody warned me. Once was enough of a lesson for me though and it has stuck with me 40+ years.

A description of that event and how you can actually see white bone for a split second before the blood covers it is part of my routine safety talk with new shooters

mid-sized autos like PPK and PA-63 do give slide bite to people with big hands.

The next time I hear "THE RANGE IS NOW HOT", it just wont be the same.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Alcohol and firearms don't mix, at least not well.

I drink, I shoot...I've done both even shitfaced hammered. The universal four are always followed and with common sense (which ain't so common now). Never had a problem. However, I don't try to invent stupid shit when shooting.

This guy is a sharp mechanic at work and an all around good guy. He just likes to imbibe on the weekends, sometimes imbibe heavily. If I ever party with him I'll make sure the guns are put away.

When I lived in Troy, New York, finishing up school, I lived next door to a guy who worked at the factory manufacturing cupolas for M60 tanks. His lunch every day was the 6-pk of beer (real beer) he took in to work in his lunchbox.

I could never tell he'd even had one...
