Learned Interesting FAL Facts at Range

I went to the range for a while this evening to check zero on an AR and function test a fresh FAL build. After firing the AR, I moved on to the FAL.

One of the other two guys that were there made casual conversation by asking me how it's going. I told him that the FAL was a fresh build and was not cycling.

He picked up my box of Federal American Eagle 5.56 and said here's the problem. You're shooting reloads. I say "Oh yeah?".

'Yep, you see this discoloration around the neck (referring to the annealed neck)? That's where it's been fired out of a machine gun. All Lake City stuff is reloaded machine gun brass. Does it have a Lake City head stamp?'

Me - "Hmmm. Didn't know that. But that's actually what I was shooting in the AR. The FAL uses this .308"

That's when the other dude chimed in and educated me on the fact that - "When Israel designed the FAL it was designed for 5.56. Somebody had the idea to change it to .308 and the rifle really wasn't designed to handle it. That's why their all finicky."

Dude pats both of us on the back and says 'you learned something today'.

I stopped at a gun store in ND this week where I have seen some nice stuff on consignment in the past. Nothing there for sale of interest to me this time, but I chatted a few minutes with the guy working the counter (not the owner who I have met in the past and is a good guy). I told this new gentleman I was always on the lookout for a bargain on an FAL.

He advised me that "fowls" are riveted together and cannot be properly field stripped or maintained without "many" very specialized tools. He further informed me the "fowl" was one of the worst military rifles ever designed and had been discontinued in favor or the AK and AR and that I should pick up one of those instead.

You guys can thank me later for passing on this vast bit of gun knowledge to you

and on a similar note I was told by a guy that has been collecting FN49's "since 1965" that FN49's were not designed to handle the gas pressure from the "heavy" 8mm ~190gr bullet military surplus rounds, it would damage the rifle, and that 7mm Vene rounds would not chamber in the 7mm Vene FN49's.

You can't fix the stupid.

I should have never read this.
I hear stuff like this on a lot of things , the self described "Expert" that knows electrical, hydraulics, mechanical and then calls a magazine a "clip".
It almost makes your IQ drop to hear it.
And being the PC person I am , they usually get upset when I call them on it, or pissy.

Comments after #1 stopped by

Long ago, after #1 showed up....various comments from family, friends, co-workers, range-strangers....

"What the hell, that's an ARMY GUN, what do you NEED that for???"
"What the hell are you doing, buying something like that"
"Something is really wrong with you"
"Dude, WTF do you need 20 round mags for, are you some kinda psycho?"
"That's awesome in Call of Duty"
"What the hell is it?"
"That's way bigger than my AR"
"That's way heavier than my AR"....this comment, x 1000, on every AR guy
who saw/handled 'teh rifal'
"Wow, that was used back in the day by old dudes"
"Not very tactical...how/where do you mount accessories?"
"WTF, you can't hunt with something like that"
"Wood, hah, that's cute"
"No way I'd hump that for 20 miles, that's one heavy sumbitch"

Oh, for all Filers, it seems the Files is 'a crazy, gun nut republican website'....from an east-coast guy I work with.

Only past really positive comment came from deceased relative, Korean-era vet..."wow, what is that, what caliber, when can we go shooting!" Miss him.
Truly regret not going shooting with him, always thought there would be more time. R.I.P. RW.

The only really current positive comments came from a bud who is older than me. Loves old military iron, boomers in general, etc. FAL, STG, L1, he doesn't care, just pass the iron and the ammo, he's happy. Had a real hoot about a year ago, took some Rhodies out for an afternoon, big grins. Ran like clocks.
Wish my goggles were better, age is a harsh taskmaster.

L1's are my fave, but any/all FAL variants will always be welcome, to me.

Range Time

Every time I go to the in door range and it's either 5.56x45 time or 7,62x51 time, It goes quiet as I always bring out the F/A stuff. It was real funny when the guy to my left say'es,Oh, That's a flare launcher to his friend, I motion his friend over and he goes back to his buddy and say's, NO stupid, It say's M-203 on the receiver and he showed me the 40mm practice round.

That's why I like taking one of the FALOs out every now and then. It really confuses the average shooter ....

"What's that ... a .50 cal???"
Me: "Nope"

"You can't shoot machine guns here." (Actually you can and may.)
Me: "No Problem"

"What do you use that for?"
Me: "Shooting"

"Is it heavy?"
Me: "yup"

meh' dead common...

I can't begin to count the tards at Shows that have slobbered on about the SIXTY CAL they were issued.
Yeah common idiot speak for M60 is sixty cal

I hate to state this but some of the worst of the firearms shit mouthing I hear at shows comes from Vets
Used to be plenty worse but it's still pretty common particularly among former Jarheads for some reason.
Gave up on debating them, waste of precious time.

I love going to the range, I like to count new holes in the over head, if it rains thare much easier to find, but you have to watch where you stand.
$110 AIM sniper scope on an AR, I'm told that you have to have good glass to make an AR perform.
I asked a guy if he was having any luck, he was using the range supplied V-block to support the muzzle of a 270 "he replied that he thinks his scope must be bad or lose"
I'm shooting suppressed 308, the guy next to me says "is that a cheaper model? Because I can still hear it"

So... Why do I like going to the range... It humors me

I had a cousin that managed a gun shop in Medford....he could be a but of a curmudgeon. I watched him toss more than one idiot out of the store for making stupid claims. Was always fun to watch

The kid that came in looking for a Tech-9....he wanted to argue with Fred that it was one of the best guns ever made after Fred told him that they wouldn't carry those pieces of shit. He received a permaban from the store...

Agreed. Having been around weapons and using them for one's job does not require, nor does it automatically grant any special insight, though many act as if they have been bestowed god-like weapons knowledge.

FAL at club range

Went to my club range to shoot my FN FAL model 50.00 at the 200 yard line---found an empty table next to three guys and a girl shooting .308 M1As---pulled the FAL out of it's case and the girl wonders over to have a look---she asks what kind of ammo does it shoot---I explain that it shoots the exact same ammo as the rifles they are shooting (Winchester .308 white box in this case)---she asks me if she could shoot it---of course, pretty girl---she touches off about ten rds (pretty good shot too) and then tells me: "This thing kicks a LOT LESS than the M1As they are shooting…" Then the guys want to try it---why not, they have plenty of factory ammo---and then I explain the history between the FAL and the M14 rifle---we had a real good time…

A group of 16 of us were told today that there is no way we can hit something at 200 yards with 22 rifles (and 2 Contender pistols) using 22lr.

We of course proved them wrong immediately by mowing down a bunch of bowling pins set up at 200 yards, using our 22lr rifles (and the 2 pistols).

I've also had AR tacticool types tell me that there is no way I can split a playing card at 50 yards with a 10/22. Again, proved them wrong in a hurry.

I love education time at the range

I can't recall ever getting any strange, let alone hostile, comments any time I bring a FAL or SLR to the range. Mostly awestruck comments...especially when they see what it does with iron sights.

Strangest reaction I can recall getting was from one of the range officers, looking crosseyed at my...M1 Garand. "I've never seen one look like THAT before" he commented, pointing to its orange 60s-rebuild birch stock....

At posh gun store.

Ask clerk who's wearing an armorer's apron, which is spotless I might add...

"That says FN FNC, is it really an FN"

Hands it to me...

"This is a red Rock."

-"yeah, they're the leading builder of FNCs. Much better than the century FNCs you see around, and worth twice as much as an import."

"Okay. I'm good thanks."

That's why I never go to the gun shop at Anacortes.

While I've never been "edjikated" about the FAL at the range, I do get quite a few "what is that?" questions. I often have the M1a and the FAL out at the same time (I like to shoot similar calibers at the same time as it keeps the ammo plan simple) and proceed to explain the relationship between the 2.

I take every opportunity to properly educate those that ask. I want to be sure the info they go tell their buddies is accurate. This is my personal little mission to curtail encounters like the OP's.

I extend this to shooting in general. I couldn't tell you the number of times I've been at the pistol range and had some kid just over 21 with more money than sense (which is most of them I think) taking his girl out to get her to shoot his new .44 or .357 or even something bigger and more stupid, and it being the first time she's ever held a gun. They put it in her hands with nary an idea about safety or etiquette and get her to squeeze off one round, which recoils like crazy and immediately spoils the fun. I see them looking scared and having no interest in a second trigger pull. That's usually when they wander off and if it happens to be past me I ask them if they'd like some actual lessons in shooting something that won't cause them pain. If they accept I start them with the Heritage Rough Rider .22LR, and show them proper grip and stance. It looks like something they have seen in a cowboy flick and has zero recoil, and it's a great tool for teaching the 4 rules with. It also can only go bang once no matter how many times you pull the trigger. From there it's the Ruger Mk II target. This is what I teach marksmanship with. The sights are easy to pick up, and that little pistol can take the nads off a flea at 20 paces. From there I move them up to the EAA Witness 9mm that's compensated. It looks and sounds and actually is a "real" caliber, but the compensation means minimal snap from the pistol, it's just a push back into the hands. Women LOVE that gun. I've had at least a dozen try to buy it off me after shooting it, but honestly I love it too. It's soft, accurate, and a great tool to show people that "not all guns will leave your hands stinging." If they show competence with that I give them the option of anything else I have with me. Quite a few see the 1911, and its fiber-optic sights. They ask if it will "feel like the (fill in the blank here) the boyfriend had them shoot did" and I explain that the hole is as big, but this one is much more gentle. Pretty soon they are embarrassing their BFs by outshooting them, and having a good time doing it.

I'm quite certain a lot of those ladies are gun owners today, and those dumb $#!+ BFs are distant memories. I hope they speak fondly of "this stranger that taught me how to shoot one day."

Never had much more that the "What is that?", "What caliber is that?", or "That sure is loud!!!" type comments at the ranges. I do remember showing up to stages during the Run-N-Guns and folks eyeing it curiously. In the first one we did in 2015 in Oklahoma, another runner was eyeing it while it was laying on the ground beside a few ARs while I was adjusting gear waiting my turn to shoot. He said "That looks heavy!" and I told him to pick it up. The look on his face was priceless!!!

I have tons of "moron at the range/show/gun shop" stories. But, since I am the focus of those stories, I'll just go over here and keep quiet.

I think you won the internet yesterday.

I know I've gotten a lot of stuff exactly wrong over the years.

I rarely go to a public range because I live on a farm but I have a friend who owns a range I visit once in awhile. Last time I was there I was shooting my FAL at the 300 range. Guy and his beautiful wife set up beside me. He has an AR. His wife kept looking over at me while he's trying to talk to her. My mag runs dry and I hear her tell her husband why don't we have a rifle like that. He glances over, looks back at her and says because it's a commie POS AK.

The range goes cold, everyone removes their hearing protection and she looks at her husband and says that's a FAL, The Right Arm of the Free World moron. The whole range bursts out in laughter. Husband packs up his AR and they leave. I told my friend who owns the range and he said she came back by herself about a month later with a SAR-48

One more. Stopped at a LGS. There's a Egyptian FN-49 on the wall on consignment. The young man I speak to pulls it down so I can check it out. He explains at length that its a Hakim, blah, blah, blah. I pull my borescope out of my pocket and check the barrel. Its a sewer pipe. Kid says,"What's that thing?" I let the kid look for himself. He says,"Just needs a cleaning." Can't make this stuff up...

I once heard this from one of the "hang-arounds" at the lgs. It was an Izzy HB and my sales guy Mike had it on the bipod on the shelf behind the counter (I gave him permission to show it). When I got there to do the paperwork this fat neckbeard type was telling me that Machineguns weren't legal in Wa. state. I gave him "the look" and said "DUH , it's a semi stupid".

Used to be plenty worse but it's still pretty common particularly among former Jarheads for some reason.
Gave up on debating them, waste of precious time.
There ya go. Fukin Jarheads think they know everything.

By the way, how do you know they were real Jarheads? Were they fat fuks with beards and tattoos?

I've also had AR tacticool types tell me that there is no way I can split a playing card at 50 yards with a 10/22. Again, proved them wrong in a hurry.

I love education time at the range
Can't hit playing cards at 50 yards with a 10/22?

The proper response is to tell them that you used to bullseye Womprats back home with your T-16.

Not hit - split. Cut a notch in the cardboard and inset card so skinny edge is facing shooter.
