There are original .22lr barrel inserts/kits. They are hard to find and probably bring close to $1k these days.

Funny, I just stumbled across this today: http://how-i-did-it.org/fal-22/index.html It may be a bigger project than you're looking for but it's an interesting read.

It seems like I remember someone building a .22 FAL on an Alumabomb way back in the glory days when parts were dirt cheap. Vandenberg maybe?

'course there's a good chance I'm completely misremembering too since I can't seem to retain information worth a chit anymore.

Imbel made (TDW/PAC imported and sold I think) some dedicated .22 FALs. Not many and they were not cheap as I recall.

There are also the kits made for the group buy here which were patterned off of the original HK kits. IIRC, the group buy price was $429 plus extra for additional magazines or custom barrel lengths, and he made both a FA-compatible and SA-only version.

I'm hoping that he indeed does another run of them. I'd like to get a kit.

Such a kit would also be nice for something like Appleseed events where they do everything or most of the shooting at 25m. Shoot .22LR to save money for most of the course and 7.62mm for the rest plus the AQT while using essentially the same rifle.

Yes, I remember that.. How did those kits turn out? I would be interested just for the novelty of it. Not sure what shooting .22 out of FAL gets you in the end though.

Some beautiful work on that .22 lr conversion, but what does it weigh?

+10 lbs or so I'd guess, about double the weight of a Ruger 10/22;

so I gotta ask, besides the machine shop fun, why do a project like this?

I'm also looking for an original .22Lr FAL but located in Europe.

I do have a rare FN made .22Lr insertkit, made for the Dutch army.

Fun to shoot. Doesn't move a bit on full auto

Goes like prrrrrrrrrrt klick, crap! empty again...

The mags are a piece of self aligning engineering

So, if somebody know a dedicated FAL in Europe, give call please.

A much different kit as compared the ErmaWerke and HK designed kits we have access to in the U.S. The ErmaWerke almost unworkable, the HK used their .22 LR mags adapted inside the mag conversion shells. They are an absolute hoot running full auto, otherwise a novelty and an expensive one. Think the last HK one I had sold $1500 on GunJoker. The novelty had outweighed it's usefulness and I'd be ashamed to say how little I paid for it in the "old days".

As I recall, the dealer warehouse had the Imbel 22LR rifles. Not sure if they imported them. One of our members had one as I was chasing it. 4 you say, oh my!

Yeah, Ravinder @ Dealer's Warehouse imported a handful and started out well over the price of a SAR-48 new at the time. Last one sold for like $2200 = all of them with neutered "ban" type muzzle....what a shame. They came in same timeframe as all the Imbel para and parts/furniture sets he sold.

The kits turned out really well! I wish i got a few more barrel inserts for the different barrel lengths I have! I always get funny looks when I shoot my kit in my 16" FAL, people are prepared for it to be loud as crap and then it just makes a tiny sound.

I hope he does another run, I want to pick up another kit, a few more mags, and a few barrel inserts.

There were various importers of Imbel .22 FALs, buddy owns one he bought from Springfield Armory back in the SAR48 days.

At the time of introduction to the American market they were panned badly due to weight. Just saying while rather uncommon they really are not a super rare thing.

Handled one built on a William's alloy upper, a Hindium alloy para lower and a 16" L1 barrel using a modified Canuck .22 conversion. Just a sweet little rifle guy built for his daughter.

I've got it up to 14.14 pounds, but can't recall if that's with or without the scope. I'm intentionally making it as heavy as possible so that extensive shooting with the heavier .22 will make a .308 FAL feel light by comparison. Half target shooting, half weight training.

Here are a couple pictures of the finished rifle:

Factory 22lr FALs.

There is a certain South America country with 382 ,22lr FALs in its inventory. IIRC they are built on a MG receiver.
So solly!
